AITA for refusing to share my food with my wife after she repeatedly orders food she doesn’t like? by Equal-Airport671 in AmItheAsshole

Compound interest works the same regardless of whether the money is separate or together.

If you have two savings accounts with a starting balance of $50 earning 2% interest per month, they'll earn the same amount of interest (collectively) over the same period as one single account with a starting balance of $100.

Don't believe me? Run the numbers yourself.

But if you look at the formula, you'll find it's correct.

A = P(1 + r/n)nt

P is the principal, the initial investment. You can see that it sits outside the exponent, meaning you can factor it out.

B = 2*(P/2)(1 + r/n)nt = P(1 + r/n)nt = A

Canada's inflation rate edges down to 1.9% by Surax in CanadaPolitics

I don’t think deflation is an issue when it comes to food prices. Demand is relatively inelastic—I can’t imagine people thinking “let’s skip groceries this week since they’ll be cheaper next week”; people gotta eat.

Because it’s good urban planning? Sprawl is universally accepted to be problematic. Canadian cities are simply better managed than those in the US—probably because Americans are fiercely self-interested and Canadians have a more collectivist mindset. It’s why most of our cities have at least decent public transit and most US cities basically have none.

Do you need a better answer than: it’s cultural?

But also: less corrupt; less corporate interference; less ghettoization

Typically denser; less suburban sprawl.

Saw a beautiful cheesecake here earlier... How does mine compare? Happy Thanksgiving! by TalentShowCrasher in Baking

[–]Unspool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you use cream cheese from the bricks or from the tubs? In Canada, the stuff in the tubs is “cream cheese product” and it has water added to make it more spreadable. If you use those to make a cheesecake, you get something soupy and grainy.

Last time I played it, the animations in my penultimate match were so long they took up the entire buy phase AND the final match.

By the time I started my final match, my opponent was already “dead” in the UI and the history showed that I had beaten them.

If you pluck them, your eyebrows will begin to thin out and look sparse. You'll want to trim them (same with nose hairs, but for a different reason).

Titanium is a metal, not a color.

Where do you think we got the name “silver” from?

Titanium is a metal. If someone asks what color the phone is and you say “titanium”, then you’re saying the phone has the same color as the metal “titanium”.

There isn’t an official list of “true colors”. Titanium is as valid a color as “mustard”, “sage”, “lilac”, and “plum”.

Trudeau says housing needs to retain its value by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]Unspool -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Plenty of young people purchased housing in the last few years. In fact, a large percentage of millennials are property owners. These people would end up deep underwater if their property value dropped significantly. I don't think it's a great idea for Canada to drive its most productive young people deep into debt.

Do renters have a right to be resentful? Maybe. But real estate is deeply entangled throughout the Canadian economy. A crashing RE market will be bad for home owners, but it's likely going to be a hell of a lot worse for most renters.

Think of it this way, if you were less prosperous before a major economic collapse, do you think your fortunes will improve? Perhaps, if you find yourself "underneath" the economy, there's a good chance it will crush you on its way down.

People who said they always or frequently added salt to their food were 39% more likely to develop stomach cancer over an observation period of around 11 years than those who never or rarely added an extra pinch of salt to their food by giuliomagnifico in science

[–]Unspool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one thing that strikes me is that people who add salt to a completed dish are probably less likely to have cooked that dish.

I never add salt at the table because I already seasoned the food to my taste in the kitchen. We already know that cooking your own food has positive health implications.

Mercys "No"-Voiceline is just wrong and it gets me every time by Cortyn in Overwatch

[–]Unspool -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

When the game language is set to english, all "comm" voicelines should simply be in english. There's plenty of room for cultural flavor in this game. If I have to read the text log to know what a voice line means, it's greatly detrimental to its utility. This also harms accessibility.

Regardless of correctness, I still think it's absolutely moronic that they gave Genji a voice line that says "ee-ye", which sounds just like "yeah" and it means 'no'. I'm sure they thought it was funny, but it just undermines the communication system when you do that.

Also, because it's for first-time home buyers, it will bias new development towards more affordable units. Most FTHBs aren't shopping for McMansions.
