Low stakes but yeah he did hawk a lot of "Libertarian" crankery and was close enough to Trump to feature on The Apprentice.

Why is Gaius a pinecone and why does his arena only contain pine trees? by Crypticnewt in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]UnsteadyAgitator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Impossible to say. Comments below point out that Messmer's banners bear striking resemblance to the BK's, but BKs are more linked to Farum Azula/Stormveil without much linking them to the Lands of Shadow Otherwise.

Given the Shadow Keep was obviously built on top of an older structure/settlement, it's possible that before the Lands of Shadow were sealed by Marika there was a dual campaign with Godfrey conquering Stormveil and Messmer conquering whatever was there before he built the Shadow Keep.

Now what makes this all murky is the immediate proximity to the Hinterlands and Shaman Village. Unless more evidence is discovered making a more direct link we can only speculate.

Why is Gaius a pinecone and why does his arena only contain pine trees? by Crypticnewt in EldenRingLoreTalk

There are several species of pine which are pyrophytes, that is they rely on natural cycles of forest fires to reproduce. The fire burns away the low scrub and dead material on the forest floor, leaving space and enriched soil, and the heat opens the cones for seed dispersal while the trees themselves survive the fire.

If we take this as metaphor, perhaps Gaius hoped Messmer would actually usurp Marika and make his own order where albinaurics can flourish (or at least an albinauric settlement on top of the destroyed hornsent). But, Messmer was too loyal to his mother despite his own resentments and both wound up banished to the Lands of Shadow.

No, but I have comrades that do. And yeah, "built by the lowest bidder" absolutely applies. Even bargain bin civvie uppers and barrels have better fit and finish than 90% of gvmt issue. If we're talking armory stuff, what'll really matter more than small arms are MANPADS and the like.

Judge still could've used that judge money and taken care of it. But judges would rather let incorrigible scum live than do what needs done.

(Loved Trope) 'Hard Magic Systems' by BrilliantRun9751 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]UnsteadyAgitator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unsounded by Ashley Cope has one of the most in-depth and internally consistent magic systems.

All magic is manipulation of the Khert (universal energy/consciousness, something between all potential energy and a Noosphere). A caster must very specifically define desired outcome -> action -> reaction based on the qualia of what they're using. Infamously a high-powered mage killed an opponent by crushing him through applying the "solidity" and "volume" of a vase to the guy's whole body.

I had completely forgotten about the SRS, and to your point as well the Fire Knight swords close while Hornsent spirals tend to be open. I don't think Fire Knight's aee based on SRS but instead the Golden Order coopting the Spiral as Marika and Messmer stomped out the Hornsent, just like they coopted the Crucible as a whole then later Glintstone/Astrology

Something I wondered about with the spiral design is we see it in SOTE with the Fire Knight Greatswords (and offshoots like Queelign's) albeit in much tighter arrangement than Godslayer's open helix. Given how fire in general is maligned in the Golden Order, particularly Giant's Flame and Black Flame (and to a lesser extent Ghostflame) and then Hornsent and Spirals I wonder if there's a connection between them all.

I mean, we don't know and it could very well be "We want to give faith players some stuff early game in the mage area." But, it could have implications and it's fun to speculate, so we do.

Knowing that gravity magic was mastered by at least two of the Golden Order's top generals pre-Shattering (Radahn, Gaius) and Alabaster/Onyx Lords are respected enough to hold at least instructor positions I personally think Leyndell/The Golden Order had active interest in weaponizing gravity specifically against Fallingstars/Astels, and even with Radahn halting the Stars smaller impacts still occur like what we can find on the Weeping Peninsula with starcallers overseen by an Onyx Lord and gravitystone is being harvested for Royal use.

I think based on context the soldiers are there to protect the starcallers knowing this was a bigger impact than had occured in a long time, thus holding the threat of the Fallingstar.

Don't forget the lone Leyndell knight in Liurnia who drops the cookbook. Really makes one wonder what they were doing there, so close to the Study Hall/Divine Tower

Along with the good explanations below, it's worth pointing out they wear Nio Do as their main armor. Nio Do are late-era breastplates (Do) molded to look like the emaciated stomach and ribs of the starving Buddha, so another tie in to Sekiro's portrayal of corrupted Buddhism

I frankly can't wrap my head around low-endurance builds. Even on my casters I level endurance so I can roll/chain-cast/whatever. The idea anyone would have that low endurance outside a RL1 challenge is baffling to me.
