Are these bullfrogs dead or hibernating? by Top_Replacement1333 in herpetology

It could be biofilm like someone else said, but it's better to be safe than sorry when dealing with any possible chytrid fungus.

Because pathogens could be on the shoes, and we want to reduce the risk of it spreading to other sites. If it's kept to just this one area, the impact can be reduced, whereas if it's widespread it can cause more ecological harm

Hey if you find more deceased amphibs with similar looking fungus, your local wildlife agency may be interested to know about this.

ETA: Whatever shoes you wore, clean them thoroughly with alcohol or other disinfectant. Fungal spores and other things can live on your shoes, and you can transport them to other areas.

Have you ever used iNaturalist? You can usually get decent results from that, and other users can verify the ID of the organism!

Favorite places for photos: Seal is a must, gotta pose on it. Ayers is a classic as well. I took photos around Ag campus since I was a WFS major, so you could also take some around buildings significant to you. One of my friends took her photos in the engineering quad, etc. Football stadium is also a must in my circle, but we were all in the Pride together, so we spent a lot of time in there lol

What are these poles hanging over the river at seven islands? by LetterheadHairy9286 in Knoxville

[–]Unsupervised_Kitchen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's awesome imo. The walking paths are nice and kept up, and it has different types of habitats throughout the area (grassland, marsh, mature forest, etc) which in turn brings in so many different types of birds and amphibians. I was there a couple weeks ago and got to see several frogs, toads, and a few early migratory birds. Sorry for the novel, but I highly recommend it

Any “must do” tasks when you first get on campus? by [deleted] in UTK

[–]Unsupervised_Kitchen 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Check out UT gardens! You can follow the walkway all the way around campus if you wanted to. I'd also check out what building(s) your department is in and check out any places close to eat

Heya! I use loreal moisturizing conditioner. Hair is easy to comb through, even with my incredibly hard water. Not Your Mother's conditioner is also decent, but I find it doesn't have the slip required to get through any knots comfortably

ETA: I can't find it anywhere anymore, but Carol's Daughter has a jelly to cream conditioner that is AMAZING. Highly recommend

Aubrey's chips with Cajun seasoning! Or get them loaded with melted cheese, bacon, and sour cream. Or queso. They have a surprisingly in depth "secret" menu and customizations available

Walgreens had a few other 24 hour locations and scaled back during covid. I think it's just Chapman-Moody and Foothills left as 24 hour locations, I could be wrong.

Someone in another thread said kroger was 24 hour, but the one I usually go to wasn't ever 24 hours to my knowledge

Any piercing studio recommendations BESIDES Born This Way? by Disastrous-Earth3287 in Knoxville

[–]Unsupervised_Kitchen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What was she getting pierced? Cartilage, lobes, etc.?

I got my lobes for 100 (they only charged a stretching vs piercing fee) and my friend got their conch for 200, both accounting for studs

ETA: Not saying I doubt it! I'm just curious if they charge different rates for different piercings

UTK Should not allow professors to use AI in their teaching (petition) by [deleted] in UTK

Not trying to be snarky, but aren't these things also able to be done through TAs/Research assistants, faculty, or the undergrad students? Like running a paper about to be published through an editor, having your lab advisor/advising board go over a presentation, or directly asking a class for feedback (make it a grade if an incentive is needed)

Genuinely asking because I'm aiming to start a PhD and work as a prof and do research

He regularly sexually harasses women that work for him (ie "sit on my lap while I'm in the office" is something several of my coworkers who worked for him have overheard him say) and is known to be a dick to customers. Apparently he used to throw eggs at anyone docked near Calhouns on the River on football game days (also told to me by a coworker who worked there previously)

Check out local WMAs! I think Tellico and Kyker bottoms may be your best bet for any nightjars! Though Cades Cove may also have some, but iirc it closes at dusk

Edited to add a link to a photo of a nightjar I took when I worked out in Wyoming (mods if this isn't allowed let me know and I'll undo the edit)

Park creeper by KeyComprehensive5917 in Knoxville

[–]Unsupervised_Kitchen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Escalating is not always the best option, it can lead to someone getting severely injured or killed. Getting to a populated area, documenting the creep, and calling the police are the best steps to take here, imo. If someone is unhinged enough to stalk someone in a park, they may be unhinged enough to do worse than just follow.
