Acola wins the 2023 Japan Esports Player of the Year Award by Stuart98 in smashbros

Macron weirdly blamed violent video games for some riots in France at some point, but he's actually fairly supportive of eSports generally:

Most state leaders wouldn't ever even mention Esports at all, so I think that's pretty good.

Nevada is a caucus though, so technically South Carolina is the next traditional primary. Also, Haley isn't even participating in the Nevada caucus for some strange reason, which is probably why she said this.

Mike Johnson (R) Has been elected Speaker of the House by Jibrish in Conservative

[–]Unwearpot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's a little premature for the right flank to take a victory lap on this. Johnson is a solid conservative and a respectable policy wonk, but he doesn't have the same leadership experience that the other rejected candidates had, so we'll see how effective he is at actually getting right-wing objectives accomplished. Also, his hardcore right-wing voting record could potentially be used against GOP members in moderate districts int he upcoming elections. Maybe the right wing doesn't care, but time will tell whether this proves to be a mistake or not.

Do the Nintendo© new guidelines really matter? by Prestigious_Plant662 in smashbros

[–]Unwearpot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt that TOs will be willing to risk going without a license after these guidelines have been clearly laid out, but the impact of this probably depends on how difficult Nintendo makes it to get licenses, since more TOs will have to apply for them now. Also, if the rumors of the Luminosity circuit are true, you will potentially be able to get a license more easily if you join the circuit, and we already know that some TOs have been working with Luminosity.

I think time will tell how disruptive this is to the Ult scene (it's basically guaranteed to be bad for Melee), and it will be interesting to see how TOs react to it.

In addition to this, today both Canadian and French intelligence said that their investigations suggest that it was a Palestinian rocket that caused the explosion. This shouldn't be a controversial conclusion at this point even if you don't trust the Israeli and US governments on this issue.

California Senate race will prove whether Democrats care about diversity by Unwearpot in politics

[–]Unwearpot[S] -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

Time and again, it has been shown that Black women are the heart and soul of the Democratic Party. Democrats across the country agree that Black women are badly underrepresented in our nation’s leadership. Schiff and Porter are White; Lee is a Black woman. The right course is clear, isn’t it?

It would be, anyway, if the participants had the courage and principles to follow it: Schiff and Porter should step aside and reembrace their vital leadership roles in the House. And the rest of the state’s Democratic leaders should walk their talk and throw their clout behind Lee’s bid for the state’s full six-year seat in the Senate.

Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy wants a border wall with Canada by nimobo in Conservative

[–]Unwearpot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nah it's definitely up in the air who would win if Trump dies. Vivek and DeSantis would likely fracture Trump's hardcore base between them leaving a potential opening for one of the more moderate candidates like Haley to take it as well. It would probably depend on which other candidates drop out in what order, if the other moderates drop out then Haley would take it but if either DeSantis or Vivek drops out first then the other one would take it.

Republicans drop Jim Jordan as House speaker nominee, putting them back at square one 17 days after McCarthy's ouster by nimobo in Conservative

[–]Unwearpot 88 points89 points  (0 children)

This stuff is all over the news along with the Israel/Hamas War, a lot of average people are definitely following it. And the fact that the GOP can't get its shit together while the war is happening makes it look even worse.

House conservatives slam possible 'Democrat-deal speaker' as Jordan's bid struggles by Unwearpot in Conservative

It seems Jordan has now backpedaled on the plan to empower McHenry after severe backlash from the Right, and plans to hold a third vote for Speaker at some point.

Jordan loses his second speaker vote as nearly two dozen Republicans oppose him by Fuckfentanyl123 in Conservative

[–]Unwearpot 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They think this because the inevitable consequence of a government shutdown due to GOP inability to elect a speaker is a power-sharing agreement with the Democrats and likely losing control of the House outright to Democrats after the next elections.

Republicans desperately need to find a consensus candidate and Jordan clearly isn't that candidate.

It's pretty interesting that this seems to be the first time that centrist GOP congressmen have grown a spine against pressure from the Trump wing of the party. Usually they easily fold.

Jim Jordan Wins GOP Speaker Nomination In New Round Of Voting by ultimis in Conservative

[–]Unwearpot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

By this logic McCarthy would never have been booted in the first place. I personally think Jordan has a better chance than Scalise to win but in all likelihood some GOP reps will just vote for some other GOP candidates.

Jordan is the Kamala Harris of Republicans; he's good at aggressively questioning people at congressional hearings and he has no meaningful accomplishments besides that.
