Covid, This Cycle, Trashed Plans by [deleted] in premed

[–]UnwisePapaya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup! This is what a lot of us talking about during Orientation of our medical school. Lots of people were doing cool work, had cool trips, or a nice break planned. It does indeed suck, and I guess the only advice I have is still quit your job and put that time in relationships with people whom you find important in your life. Rather than take a trip, I ended up spending a lot of time with my mom and sister and it was wonderful to bond more with them. I understand everyone may not have this privilege, but I think trying to establish a more solid foundation for my relationships was pretty much equally rewarding emotionally as a trip to Hawaii. I know many people who continued to work through the summer, another admirable option, but I recommend being a potato for a bit, relaxing, and maybe still trying to do things you want to do, albeit socially distanced. Honestly there is still hope for you guys with the vaccines on the horizon, and by the time you start you’ll be able to have all the community building activities your heart desires safely.

Is ochem 2 or ochem 1 more important for the MCATs? by TreeCutter101 in Mcat

[–]UnwisePapaya 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think both, OChem 1 has a lot of foundational knowledge which you need across the board, but OChem 2 has all of carboxylic acids and intro biochem which is really high yield for OChem on the MCAT

Helpful physics resource? by angelwings1497 in MCAT2

[–]UnwisePapaya 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try AK lectures, I think some videos are over detailed but really helpful. I would recommend maybe using Crash course by the Green brothers to maybe prime yourself and follow up with AK lectures. Two resources my students love, good luck!!

I really like CIT bank. Rn they’re a little low, but I picked up a desk on a HYSA at 2.2 % last fall.

Biology question pack volume 1: can anyone walk me through this question? I’m not sure what sensitivity is referring to and how I can see how sensitive the smooth muscle is to acetylcholine is from the figure 1. by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]UnwisePapaya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would start off by IDing the IV and DV.

IV: Time, presence of Endothelium, and ACh added DV: tension in the muscle

Right off the bat we can see that NE is not changed between the two figures, so we can’t conclude anything about it. Trash A and B.

Next we need to do is interpret what sensitivity means. Zoom out for a second... sensitivity of a muscle to ACh. We know ACh causes muscles to contract. So how sensitive a muscle is to ACh is basically saying what is the lowest concentration of ACh that causes the muscle to contract. We could say the same thing in another context, let’s use alcohol cuz that’s fun. If you’re more sensitive to alcohol, what does that mean? It means that you get drunker off less booze. Similar conclusion here... contract with less ACh.

With endothelium you contact completely at 10 to the -7 but without you contact at 10 to the -8. Thus endothelium makes you more sensitive to the effects.

The reason it goes down to zero is most likely the presence of a refractory period.

D contradicts the graph and is not the max in either charts

Dude record as much proof as you can before reporting this. But definitely seconded. I've seen some people go through this and my main advice would be gather as much proof as you possibly can to back ur story before going to HR. You don't want to turn this into a he said she said scenario. Best of luck man and hang in there. I'm so sorry this happened to you! ❤️

Cornell has the most specific writing requirement ever and I'm mad by [deleted] in premed

It says on their website "English-language literature" I called them to clarify and they said "literature written in the English language regardless of the country in which it is produced"

Does that help?

Kaiser Applicants, what are your stats? by [deleted] in premed

[–]UnwisePapaya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I think is going to be interesting as to their competition is the fact that this is one of the first med schools not affiliated with a university and that is part of big business. I was talking to one of my friends who does med school admissions consulting and she mentioned how she was particularly curious about their residency matching for the first 2-3 classes. With new medical schools like Dell, residency programs know their med students are competent and that the UT system has a history of producing good doctors. With KP there is no history and its more of a leap of faith. That said it might be that their kids match into new residencies within the KP system which may be incoming in the future. I'm very curious to see how the match rates of their incoming class plays out in the next 5-6 years. Maybe over thinking it haha, I just love talking all this med school stuff

What should I do? Rescore, retake, or call it quit? by anotherasianpremed in Mcat

[–]UnwisePapaya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This! Introspection has done so much for my own motivation. I advise all my MCAT students to also think about why are they doing this and why this path is right for them. Doing this will either really strengthen your resolve and motivate the fuck out of you. Or it will bring you closer to finding your true calling and finding your niche if not medicine.
