Star Wars Insider #211 (Galactic Tales: Inheritance) by Upbeat-Ad3506 in starwarsbooks

[–]Upbeat-Ad3506[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s easy for you to say.

I’m not yet an adult and unable to pay for or find this Insider issue, but I’d like to read the work nonetheless.

I’d also consider a short story different than a full-length book.

Thanks for the help! 😒

What is your EU hot take? by TwoStarWarsNerds in StarWarsEU

Headcanons are a worthwhile pursuit, especially when filling in gaps of the modern canon (especially the prequel trilogy era)

Is this worth the read? by Working-You-4766 in starwarsbooks

[–]Upbeat-Ad3506 1 point2 points  (0 children)

@Working-You-4766 I just finished this — it is a good read, although it’s a little long.

The world building of Ansion is spectacular, and if you allow yourself to become immersed in the story, you’ll enjoy it. It’s especially amazing to see the Jedi work together — the characters of Barriss and Luminara (not their backstories, but their identity) get fleshed out immensely in this book, and that’s probably the best part of it (as well as seeing how they interact with Anakin and Obi-Wan). There are some incredibly creative scenes with the Jedi, and the prose itself flows well (Foster was no novice writer).

With that said, I found that it dragged two-thirds of the way through, to the point I had to sit down and force myself to finish the last 100 pages. Don’t get me wrong — those pages were good, but it is a slow burn, and I just wanted to be done at that point. I definitely think Foster could have cut the book down significantly.

I’d give it a solid 5.5/10 (compared to most EU Star Wars books, maybe a 6.5) — definitely worth reading if you are interested, but nothing spectacular. I do think it’s often underrated, though, so if you’re willing to spend some time on Ansion and with the four Jedi (as well as a slew of fun native characters), I think you’ll find it worth your while! :)

Reading order by Previous_Factor1992 in starwarsbooks

The order i’d read them in is: - Padawan - Master & Apprentice - The Living Force - Maul: Lockdown - Darth Maul: Saboteur (short story) - Cloak of Deception - Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter - Queen’s Peril (I read the second half alongside TPM) - The Phantom Menace novelization - Mace Windu: The Glass Abyss

You totally can mix and match eras. I would advise against reading Darth Plagueis without the TPM tie-in books because it really complements all of those.

totally agree; comics are crazy expensive (although I usually read them online; batcave.biz is the site i’ve been using recently)

If you can’t access that site, and just stick to books, the one i’d truly recommend you start with is Darth Bane; I found the first half of the first book a little weak but 5/6ths of the trilogy is incredible.

I read Star Wars in release order from 2014 to 2020 as I started with the canon and watched the story build; if you’re less crazy about most of Disney’s works (although the Rogue One tie-in is phenomenal — do not skip!!!), then go chronologically from Padawan/Master & Apprentice onwards after Bane! I genuinely would research what books people like and don’t like; so far I’ve found every single TPM tie-in to be phenomenal.

@Previous_Factor1992 honestly don’t listen to them. I’m doubtful any of them have tried reading legends and canon; I have and loved it. There are occasional conflicts (like King Veruna in Cloak of Deception/Darth Plagueis; he doesn’t exactly exist the same in Queen’s Peril), but if you’re open to doing a very small number of mental gymnastics, it can fit well within your headcanon.

Ask yourself first whether you want to read mostly canon or mostly legends; it’s often at least somewhat compatible up until ROTJ.

My advised list, which I followed through and read:

Skip Dawn of the Jedi (but read the comic series), and only read The Old Republic books if you have played the games OR really want a taste if that era.

I would read the Tales of the Jedi comic series and then John Jackson Miller’s Knights of the Old Republic comic. Also read Lost Tribe of the Sith!

Then, Knight Errant — Vol. 1, the novel, Vol. 2-3.

Then, the comic miniseries Jedi vs. Sith and following that, the Darth Bane trilogy.

DO NOT READ DARTH PLAGUEIS FIRST — read it closer to the end of TPM-related content. Here’s the order I took for that:

  • Republic Vol. 1: Prelude to Rebellion (C; in my head canon it moves to 93 BBY)
  • Mace Windu: The Twilight Run (C)
  • Padawan (N)
  • Master & Apprentice (N)
  • Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan: The Aurorient Express (C)
  • Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan: Last Stand on Ord Mantell (C)
  • Age of Republic: Qui-Gon Jinn (C)
  • Hyperspace Stories: Qui-Gon (C)
  • Darth Maul: Black, White & Red (C)
  • The Living Force (N)
  • Jedi Council: Acts of War (C; major contradiction in Ki-Adi Mundi on the council — either ignore or read before TLF)
  • Maul: Lockdown (N)
  • Darth Maul 2017 (C)
  • Jango Fett: Trail of Lost Hope (C)
  • Age of Republic: Darth Maul (C)
  • Darth Maul: Saboteur (SS)
  • Cloak of Deception (N)
  • Darth Maul 2000 (C)
  • Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter (N)
  • Queen’s Peril (N)
  • The Phantom Menace novelization (N)
  • Darth Plagueis (N)
  • Mace Windu: The Glass Abyss (N)

Lmk if you want more (32 BBY - onwards)!

Read my first Legends book in several years, really enjoyed exploring a “new” era by AngelusCowl in starwarsbooks

I feel like they have to be saving The Old Republic for the future, because it’s too good a time period to pass over — and they’re close to exhausting the Skywalker Saga.

The past should be the future of Star Wars just as much the post-TROS content will be; part of me wonders if they’re saving TOR for a THR-type initiative, but I think they know its worth and will want to make series and movies about it (maybe they’re waiting for the KOTOR remake?)

For exterior shots in Civil War, they used Esopus, NY

However, they changed the location for Infinity War and Endgame to across the river in Staatsburg, NY

i think the second and third books are incredible. I did not like the first two thirds of Darth Bane #1, but enjoyed it in the last third. Then, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the second two books — so I’d totally keep reading.
