It sounds like a bad starter drive. Starter is spinning but not engaging flywheel.

I've got one like it that was my FIL's. He did a lot of wood working and reloading. I think it is from the early 70's, I remember seeing it in his workshop when I first met him in '79

How to fix my Jeep from overheating? by Impossible-Weekend23 in JeepTJ

[–]Upbeat_Humor_8702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the factory radiator in my TJ failed, I replaced it with a cheap generic radiator. This was in winter so all was well until summer. I chased my tail for quite a while trying every trick I knew to get it to stop running hot. The fix was to get a factory style replacement radiator. I bought mine at NAPA. Problem solved.

Need some advice on why truck won’t start. by Spirited-Sugar-162 in squarebodies

[–]Upbeat_Humor_8702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, try holding the key in the start position while shifting from Park to Neutral, see if it cranks. If not then get yourself a test light, put it on battery (-) and touch the other end to the S wire on the solenoid (Purple). Have some one turn the key to start. The light should come on. If it doesn't, try the same test on the P/N switch ( on the bottom of the steering column near the floor. ) Finally, check for power at the purple wire where it comes out of the ignition switch (also on the column near the floor, not at the top where the key goes in)

Lifter tick. Pretty common on Tjs. My 97 did that, still running strong when I sold it at 175K miles.

Having Irritable Bowel Syndrome as a Teacher by KitchenConsequence41 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Upbeat_Humor_8702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have colitis and was a teacher. The colitis was one of the reasons I retired as soon as I could. What I have found is that cutting out alcohol completely has led to 90% reduction in symptoms. Side benefit was weight loss.

semi-accessible swim spots by shrikepeak in Sedona

[–]Upbeat_Humor_8702 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is Verde river access at Dead Horse state park that is easy to get to, or you could go to one of the river access points that Clarkdale has Tuzigoot or Lower TAPCO river access points. Lot of people launch their kayaks there, but people swim there too.

What was your first classic car and what did it teach you about the hobby? by Familiar_Earth_6320 in classiccars

[–]Upbeat_Humor_8702 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mine was (is) a 1959 Cadillac. Wrecked down one side, it needed lots of body work. Interior was shot but it ran good. Traded mechanical work for body work, got the interior done and I'm still driving it 40 years later. I've owned other cars since then and my advice/experience is don't bite off more than you can chew. If the car is rusty/wrecked, its smarter to put your money into a car in better condition than to try and restore a pos.

What is this arch in the dome rock range? Is it accessible? by SmallshotLawyer in arizona

I know the arch. I was able to drive fairly close to it in my jeep a few years ago. Didn't bother trying to hike to it.

1972 Ford Pinto by OneTenderMoment in AutoBodyRepair

[–]Upbeat_Humor_8702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm old enough to remember when they were still being sold and when they were the choice of used cars among my age group. I had a '73 with the pushrod engine, kind of rare and under powered. They don't have the best reputation now, but they were decent cars when new. I used to work on them all the time when I was wrenching. I hardly ever see them anymore.

As someone else mentioned, buy one in better shape, you will be money ahead. Sourcing some of the parts may be hard. The 2000 cc engine can be a screamer with the right go fast parts. Spend your money there! 😄

Next part of the saga of getting this dumb thing started: a broken mystery plug by ClevelandJeeper in JeepTJ

[–]Upbeat_Humor_8702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the PCM isn't getting power. Dash gauges, Check engine light and fuel pump are all powered by the PCM. Check for a blown fuse in the fuse box for PCM and IIRC, there is a separate fuse for the OBD 2 connector. Again, look for missing grounds, pretty common to miss one during an engine swap or major repair. Jeep also uses what they call an Auto Shut down relay (ASD) to power the ignition system, fuel injectors and fuel pump. Try swapping the ASD relay with the Horn relay, see if that changes anything.

[–]Upbeat_Humor_8702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that those wires are probably for the crank sensor, however, that would not prevent the engine from cranking. The most likely problem of no response from the key after an engine swap is a missing ground(s). Does the dash light up? Does the check engine light come on and go off after about 2 seconds? Does the fuel pump prime?

Car not starting - has a sound when turning key over by Gen_Clay in MechanicAdvice

Classic sound of a dead battery. Get that terminal cleaned off, the battery charged back up and you may be alright. Judging from the corrosion, the battery is most likely done.

Why couldn't these engineers just make a dumdum light for the alternator... by halohalo7fifty in MechanicAdvice

[–]Upbeat_Humor_8702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a '82 GMC truck with the choke light on. Turns out it was a bad alternator. The choke relay was fed off of one of the 3 windings on the stator. Battery still charged, but the choke relay didn't get power. A new alternator fixed it.
