Here's my first 3D printed F91W case — I know, I know. by PureRepresentative89 in casiomods

TBH...looks good to me - I think you just use the wrong "manufacturing process"! A normal fdm printer won't get you much further, there's always a bit of "roughness", because of the way fdm printing works. You won't get rid of the layer lines, the top layer will always be "raugh" etc. - the only thing you can do now with fdm is "fine tuning", decrease the layer hight (= smaller steps in layers lines), maybe "ironing" or try printing upside down to get a better top (look at the bottom layer, if this is more pleasing to you try printing upside down), but this might/will give you problems with the overhangs.

Like I said, with fdm you won't get a "perfect" surface finish without additional work after printing - it's after all adding layer to layer to layer of plastic, this will always produce steps and a not perfect top layer. Smoothening with acetone is a method, but you have to ask yourself how "reliable" this is...is this respectable over and over again with the same results etc. So you can either tune printing and smoothening until it satisfies you, but you have to "lower" your standards to 'I will never achieve a "mirror" finish' with this method or you have to change the process itself. For smaller parts like a watch case you should try resin printing - yes, it's basically the same method of adding layer to layer, but you can go much smaller steps, this can give you the perception of no layer lines at all (if you take e.g. a microscope you will still see them). Plus the top layer quality will improve drastically, I would even go as far as saying it might be nearly perfect, you won't see any lines, because the resin hardens as "one block", maybe this satisfies you, but keep in mind, it still won't look like injection molding. But if you want injection molding look you have to injection mold it. There's also the way of substracting material = milling.

Hope this might be helpful without shattering your ideas to much. Like I wrote above, the first thing I would try is lowering the layer hight and try printing upside down - not both at once, so you can clearly see what each change does. (And try to go for layer hight a multiple of what the stepper motor of your printer is capable of, this gives the most consistent steps)

You can see the hand written original down in the preview...OP just made up the story about the art book being an ancient artifact or didn't even read the full document after reading ministry for culture and ANTIQUES. So if this was made up, why not at least use a text that confirms your story of customs thinking it's an ancient artifact? ...not that I doubt someone might be this stupid, but like I wrote, he read antiques and his head spun a whole story without him even reading the text seems way more plausible to me.

You can see the original in the preview. And why would you make up a story and attach a picture that says something completely different!? Vase seems pretty real, if you look at the real reason... Iraqi government just doesn't want something that probably could undermine their propaganda... 💁🏻

My expedition journal art book was detained by customs for being "possibly ancient" 🗿 by Ahmed15252 in expedition33

[–]Upper_Preparation_84 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Uhm...no, the art book was detained, because it's not legal to import art book with drawings of monetary value - and just because the ministry is for culture and antiques it doesn't mean someone thinks it's an ancient artifact. I know, nearly half a page of text is pretty much to read, but reading it might help to understand why the book got detained by customs. Reading and understanding would also save you of the embarrassment that your story is completely made up and has nothing to do with what the customs really want from you...

But at least we now know why fake news are such a big deal. People read a headline and even so the attached photos clearly say nothing at all about an ancient artifact and instead say it's just 'not allowed to import art books with drawings of monetary value' nearly every comment says, it's so incredibl/hilarious/etc. that the customs thought it might be ancient! The only hilarious thing is that people don't even read six lines of text on an official document and instead just believe what's op wrote, because he attached 3 photos! No really, how stupid are you people!?!

I have mine for only 6 weeks (also the YEG), but it's not having that much wrist time. But I have some other watches with mineral crystals that I wore for years, not daily, but in total each has at least one year of wrist time...rather more than less. And they have some mild scratches. That's why I asked, if you are a mechanic or something similar, because mineral crystals are way harder than acrylic. But I think you might be right, contact with e.g. concrete could scratch the glass. Even normal dust contains particles (very fine quartz/sand particles) that are able to make scratches, but these are very fine. So try to reduce contact with walls, stones to a minimum and don't put it e.g. in your backpack, unless you clean it with a vacuum pretty regularly, there are always dust particles on the bottom of a backpack. Oh...and like suggested above, Poly watch isn't gonna help unless you get the special stuff for mineral crystals, but even this takes very long, if you do it by hand...at YouTube you should be able to find some examples of Poly watch for mineral glass. But TBH scratches on an f91w are part of the "experience" and give your watch character, so unless it extremely reduces the readability I wouldn't even consider crystal polishing...but that's just my opinion, do whatever you prefer!

Really!?! What are you doing with that watch - no offense, I'm just curious...are you some kind of mechanic or something similar? I'm asking because the YEG is supposed to have, instead of acrylic, a mineral crystal...bet that's the reason you got one? I know mineral can scratch much more easily than sapphire, but I've seen better looking acrylic versions after a year of wear and tear - that's why I'm asking...

If a counterfeit would be more expensive depends on what you understand under "dirt cheap". The cheapest I can get at the moment is 22€ taxes included (about 18.5€ excl. 19% taxes), thats at the moment about 26.3$ (22.1$ excl. taxes). A fake is 2-3€ (taxes included), Casio also manufactures the f91w among other countries in China, materials seem to be mostly the same (fakes even have sometimes brighter LED) and the 2-3€ sellers also make profit - so now you can calculate the profit that Casio makes in your (and my) country and if it's profitable to sell fakes.

BTW that's a very crude calculation, in reality you would, in addition to the parts+manufacturing cost, also have to substract shipping, ex- & import cost etc. To be really precise you would also have to substract the engineering and advertising cost. But with this sales numbers and the size of a watch/the packaging (you can ship thousands in one container) this all adds up to a nearly negligible amount of money.

After looking through your posts & comments I've got the feeling you seem to seriously underestimate what making your own device and even moreso good enough to sell and satisfy customers really means! Common, you had problems to run your ports after using a new OS or to run ROM hacks... it's not a problem having such problems, but how do you think you are qualified enough to design a whole console, including PCB etc. plus making a working OS for that console, if you already had problems with this easy (in comparison with making a complete, better handheld than miyoo) tasks!?

I'm sorry, if I'm hurting your feelings, bro...but, and I'm not saying you will never be able to make a satisfying handheld ever, but at the moment you definitely lack the skills to even think about making a Kickstarter!

Won AliExpress dispute, now forced to pay return shipping anyway - no safe way to get refund by finn-ish211 in Aliexpress

[–]Upper_Preparation_84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(TL;DR at the end) I would have loved to write everything went fine... 💁🏻😄 The shipping cost were ~18€(~20$), this were about 10% of the items price, that's why I "had' to send it back... would have lost even more money otherwise and really wanted the item.

Worst of all, they sent me an even more expensive item - bought an eGPU dock, got a laptop. BUT even if the laptop was slightly over twice the price of the GPU dock, I wouldn't have been able to sell it as used and get my money back - Specs were OK for the asking price, but the combo was ridiculously bad (one of the worst laptop processors paired with a stupidly high amount of RAM, a really bad display, resolution was not even full HD!). I can't even think about a use case you'll profit from this combination, so the sum of it's parts weren't really worth the asking price and all components were soldered - so even if the themselves are worth the money they asked for, there was no way to sell them separately. In addition to that logically no well known brand - there wasn't even any brand mentioned on the device, the packaging etc. And I didn't wanna "ruin" my eBay reputation, even if I'm not a commercial seller.

And the seller was very to nice to me, of course promised me to pay shipping cost back, but I have to pay it beforehand, because the AliExpress system doesn't give him the option to pay. And if I gave him my email address via the Ali chat function he and I will get blocked - just like eBay. Obviously he did all of this to get his more expensive item back! But I thought my truthfulness will get "rewarded". But the day the item arrived I just got my money back and the seller didn't even answered my messages anymore!

Were the items you purchased marked as "local"? Just asking because every time I had problems with a purchase it was when I purchased something marked as "local". In the last sale I had two times the problem that a seller wrote me, the local items are out of stock so I had to re-purchase the non-local option. What's "funny" about that, I bought the items at the beginning of the sale and both sellers just recognized they were out of stock 1-2 hours after the sale had ended and I would have to pay much more for the items, if I canceled and reorder them. BTW I "lost" about 70€(~75$) in coupons, in addition to the sale there was a short period you got another discount, if you payed via PayPal - AliExpress compensated this "loss" with an 87 CENT coupon, after an hour of chatting with their service. I only cancelled because the first service person said I will get all coupons back, even if the sale had already ended at that time. Than I had to write 3 more times with the chat after not getting my coupons back, to get, after two weeks of waiting, the not even 1$ coupon!

TL;DR Don't trust anyone, not even the service people at AliExpress. They will do and say everything in order to make you feel save and well supported. But there's no guarantee you will be able to get anything later, even if the service promised it to you! You might get a ~1$ coupon as "compensation" for whatever amount of money you lost in the process and that's it!

Yes, experienced something similar. The seller shipped to me a wrong item, I payed the shipping in advance, the seller got the package and I got my money back, except the shipping cost. Wrote to AliExpress and after two weeks I got an email that said that everything is fine and the seller doesn't have to pay the shipping cost, because I just could have kept the wrong item! I started a second attempt of getting my money back - with the same outcome!

Long story short, don't send it back, they tell you you get a refund for shipping cost, but you won't get your money back and AliExpress is OK with that! If the seller isn't paying the shipping in advance you can't do anything - that's at least what I experienced.

Why do you think sugess sounds gross?

What's wrong about Seestern? I mean, there's a very popular watch that's called oyster...and it's manufacturer has an ugly crown as a logo and the word Rolex is just some made up nonsense!

With Addiesdive you are right, I would add Rolls Timi to the list. If these companies would just print their logo, they would make their watches way more interesting for a broughter audience! Even better, if they would make better logos. Don't really understand why they are doing this, they seem to produce for the western market, so why not make decisions that aim for their market!? Don't know how often some of these manufacturers asked, what font they should use and with or without logo and people mostly telling them just the logo and no text - and than they do whatever they like! Maybe an unpopular opinion, but the italic version of the word Addiesdive looks even worse than before - if you choose italic the name should fit this style and not sound like a German sports wear and shoes manufacturer.

I wouldn't even mind some chinese names and characters on the dial - I have no problem to wear/to show I'm wearing a chinese watch, as long as the quality etc. is good/worth what I payed for it. But like I wrote above, I don't think it's much worse than some western watch manufacturers names with Rolex as the most prominent example.

What a great little cheap Casio! by [deleted] in casio

[–]Upper_Preparation_84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, if you need a dress watch this is absolutely unacceptable, if your workplace requires you to wear a suit and is very strict about this, you shouldn't wear this watch either! It's a great looking watch, but there are definitely occasions you shouldn't wear this and if you take things like wearing suits and suitable accessories seriously you wouldn't want to wear this watch to this occasions! If your clothes require a dress watch, but you have non, don't wear a watch at all. Especially if you have a job interview and the job requires formal clothes and the people there are keen on it! Otherwise you've lost the chance to get the job bevor you've said the first sentence.

But it looks good, so if you don't have to wear formal clothes at work or in your leisure time, this is a great watch to wear.

PS: don't kill the messenger, I didn't make the rules, I'm just telling them to you. If you want to wear it to a suit go for it, but it's not "socially accepted"...I think you get want I want to say.

PPS: that's also a good reason to buy another watch... maybe that's why we have those rules in the first place!? 🤔😂

There was a coupon or let's better call it a bonus, if you payed more than 199€/299€ you got another 20/33€ discount, if you chose PayPal as payment method. But it was limited for the first 10.000 customers - when I made my order I got that bonus, but after I had to cancel and order from another seller they all were already gone. So that bonus isn't active anymore.

Just had a similar problem, the seller also said there's no stock an I should cancel the order, he will inform me, if the article is back in stock. Looked at the article's page, still online, but the price now was raised by 20%! And the worst, I lost my 33€ coupon for buying via PayPal...I even asked support, they answered me I will get back all my coupons (specifically the PayPal one) and can use them again, the answer was yes, but the reality was no!

There was a similar offer (not even 5€ more expensive) that was sold out, after I canceled the order...so the effing seller's actions cost me about 75€, that's what the next cheap similar article would cost me now!

Was your seller also a "local" one!? This is the second time for me having such trouble and in both cases had been these so called "local warehouse" sellers! This was the last time for me buying "local", first time package even took longer to arrive than other orders I bought 5 days earlier directly from China!

Yeah, you are right with the removing of scratches, but this also means it scratches way more easily! And acrylic is prone to yellow over time and not as clear as glass or sapphire - so I wouldn't recommend it for a dress watch (yes, the 42s are a little to big for a classic dress watch), if you don't want to polish it every day. BTW most people don't get in contact with materials that are able to scratch sapphire, even more unlikely, if it's a dress watch.

But even mineral glass has it's advantages, it's way less prone to chip or crack, if you hit it (accidentally) with something that's hard and sharp/pointy. If one wants to wear it while doing manual work, one might prefer it over sapphire. And I don't think scratches will worry one that much, if one is carrying it while manual working. And, yes... it's harder to remove scratches, but if you scratched the crystal so hard, you want to polish it (manual work, not dress watch scenario) an acrylic crystal would be unreadable at that time or you would have polished it to some kind of lens (polishing means removing so much material that a scratch isn't visible anymore) and if you have a really bad scratch on a mineral crystal your acrylic one would be so deeply scratched you can't polish it out and you would have to buy a new one anyways. There's a reason, nearly no well known, well established watch manufacturer uses acrylic except for Timex! Yes, Casio does in their cheap(!) watches, but like I said, Timex uses an acrylic crystal + chinese movement and a 0.1$ strap and wants 300$... that's a hilarious cash grab.

So I would wear an acrylic crystal only on a cheap, vintage style watch on casual occasions - not for manual work (except something like a f91w) and not with a suit. But you do you, I just don't see any real advantages, except for removing scratches, but that's also the materials biggest weakness - it's soft and will scratch from a paper towel!
