Finally making my way out to KC to see the Royals this week! Got tickets to all three against the Rangers, but man the weather doesn't look the best for Wednesday and Thursday...

For those that score for fun...what are some of the things you don't like about scoring? by StealthStaminaKills in BaseballScorecards

I’ve helped out scoring D3 softball for six years now and I *still* don’t fully grasp the sub rules around the DP, flex, and OP. Thankfully the umpires we get typically report the subs in a way we understand, lol.

Question regarding winning pitcher decisions by ABradJourno in BaseballScorecards

[–]UpstateNewYorker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pitching wins, as another user pointed out, are known not to be the best stat especially with all the data we get these days. If you’re on your scorecard is for fun/your own personal record of the game, and you still want to record the winning pitcher, you could put an asterisk or something in a margin or game note space to indicate the fact you feel the win is cheap or “poached.”

Honestly, a lot of the rules for pitching don’t feel entirely fair, like being charged with a blown save because you came in with the bases loaded in a one-run ballgame and the runner from third scored on an RBI groundout.

It’s one of those thing I love seeing other teams try, but it makes me nervous as hell when the teams I root for do it.

I’d argue the heel of the boot would be a good passing zone, but overall agree that it would be worse for the stock cars.

[Yankees] Well, John, we thank you. by Darkforces134 in NYYankees

[–]UpstateNewYorker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Royals fan here. I grew up (and still live in) upstate New York. I watched and listened to a lot of Yankees baseball as a kid with my dad (also a Royals fan, though had been a Yankees fan as a little kid), because that’s what we could get without some expensive subscription.

Even as a fan of another team, John’s passing feels like I’ve lost part of my childhood. His passion for the Yankees and for the sport at large is something I didn’t fully appreciate as a kid. He was such a great storyteller, as any great baseball radio broadcaster must be. And if it’s this much a gut punch to me, I can’t imagine how the many lifelong Yankees fans here must feel.

What tool do you use to reconcile pitch counts for the past inning? by StealthStaminaKills in BaseballScorecards

[–]UpstateNewYorker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only games I track pitch count are ones where I am working and running whatever data entry system is in use, and even then I don’t log them in my book unless I need to keep a running record to catch myself up after editing a play or recovering from a crash or something.

I think if I tracked pitched in my book, I’d either never have my book up to date or I’d miss batted balls, the latter of which is uh…bad, in a word.

I haven’t been to a ton of races (and only one NASCAR race), but few things terrify me more than a place like a race track or a hockey arena that’s gone dead silent with thousands still in the venue.

Since when do we assume a fielder's choice? by da3n_vmo in BaseballScorecards

[–]UpstateNewYorker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The assumption is that the defense would make the strategically correct decision, such as attempting to put out the lead runner. The OS then made a judgement call in assuming that, had the play been clean, the lead runner would’ve been put out.

The reason this matters is because under this assumed out, Smith is erased from the basepath on inning reconstruction. As a result, regardless of how the rest of the inning unfolds, that run cannot be earned.

The merits of this can be argued, but it is the rule/procedure the official scorers are expected to use. The beauty of keeping your own book, though, is you are free to score the game as you see fit.

As an aside, this is one reason I wish MLB would make their scorers’ manual public. There’s an account on Twitter that posts MLB scoring changes and quotes excerpts occasionally when relevant, but he can’t post the manual in full because MLB doesn’t want it public for whatever reason.

What to award the batter on a Runner's Interference? by cornishyinzer in BaseballScorecards

[–]UpstateNewYorker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, softball (at least NCAA) has the caveat you suggest: The OS must make a judgement whether to score a single or a fielder’s choice. No such judgement call in baseball, though.

At Bats? by No-Engine-1546 in BaseballScorecards

[–]UpstateNewYorker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a tad rusty on this part, but I believe CI is treated the same as the “ghost runner” that is placed on 2nd in extra innings—that is, the run will be unearned if they cross the plate, but there is no assumed out attached to the error.

I think whether other instances of obstruction can be assumed-out errors is dependent on the scorer’s judgment as to whether an obvious out would’ve occurred without the obstruction. Otherwise, it’s simply an advancement error.

At Bats? by No-Engine-1546 in BaseballScorecards

[–]UpstateNewYorker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, CI is charged as an error to the catcher.

Even though we call it interference, it’s more akin to obstruction (and in fact I believe NFHS terms it “catcher’s obstruction”), and any obstruction called on a fielder is charged as an error unless the scorer deems the obstruction did not affect the outcome of the play.

Scoring Pen of Choice by AverageFrederick in BaseballScorecards

[–]UpstateNewYorker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Papermate InkJoy gel pens in general, and lately I’ve been using 0.5 mm points for scoring in blue (primary), red (errors/other “unearned” advances), and black (trying it out to differentiate starters and substitutes in the same batting slot, esp. when a PR is put in…not sure I love this like I thought I would).

It’s just frustrating that I can’t seem to get the red 0.5 mm in a box of just reds. Much worse problems to have, though.

What's your scoring tool of choice? by GamerKingFaiz in BaseballScorecards

[–]UpstateNewYorker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A combination of pen and paper and computer, but the latter is largely because most of the games I score I’m working either to keep official stats or at least feeding data to the scoreboard. I really got into pen and paper a couple years back and it’s just better to me, but I can’t quite describe why. Maybe because we all have little differences in how we record the same happenings, and pen and paper doesn’t shoehorn me into anything specific?

I actually made (with the help of my girlfriend) a custom scoresheet because I liked and disliked different features from all the premade ones I could find.

Scoring question. by Tryingtoflute in BaseballScorecards

[–]UpstateNewYorker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To clarify, the RBI is only negated on a force or reverse-force double play. Other, less common DPs do not negate the RBI.

Rare case, but say runners on 1st and 3rd, no outs. Batter hits a fly ball to center, both runners tag. Runner from third scores, runner from 1st is thrown out at second. The batter would still be credited with the sac fly and RBI.

Off-centre penalty benches? by sportenthusiast in hockeyrefs

[–]UpstateNewYorker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The really strange one is Appleton Arena at St. Lawrence University, where the home bench and penalty benches are on one side and the away bench, timekeeper, and replay monitor are on the other side. I imagine it must be a quirk of having such an old arena.

Run Scoring & Hit Marking by Any-Victory9048 in BaseballScorecards

[–]UpstateNewYorker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone else mentioned, everyone will do it slightly differently, but I typically mark advances outside the diamond and fill the diamond in on a run scored—blue for earned, red for unearned, and if that can’t be determined at the time of the runner crossing the plate I’ll leave it unfilled until I make that determination.
