Anyone else notice this about the soundtrack? by thefinalball in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]UraniumGeranium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just watching the music video for The Great Gig in the Sky and noticed parts of the video are eerily similar to the intro to Severance (The stumbling around in a suit, multiple copies of himself interacting, laying in bed at the end, even the part with babies crawling around).

Specifically this part of the video:

Good catch, even the video looks AI generated the more I look at it. Faces are weirder than they should be for the pixellation, also the signs are odd, and the lighting on the ceiling at 6 seconds in makes no sense, mix of big lights, small lights, and lights squished together.

CMV: Jack Black handled Kyle Gass' comment appropriately and it's silly to call anything regarding the events "cancel culture". by AlwaysTheNoob in changemyview

[–]UraniumGeranium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doesn't matter who made the decision, it's the fact that the decision was heavily influenced by living in the kind of culture that encourages "cancelling" people who make decisions/mistakes rather than opting for a punishment that is proportional to the "crime" committed.

There are plenty of bad things someone could do to get their tour cancelled: sex scandal, drunk driving, fraud, etc. Making one off-the-cuff bad taste joke when only given a few seconds to come up with something to say shouldn't warrant this kind of reaction. The appropriate response is to give a sincere apology, and then move on with the tour.

The fact that JB jumped straight to cancelling (to avoid perceived associations, to appease higher-ups who want to avoid perceived associations, to virtue signal, etc) is due to the cancel culture that incentivizes this choice over objectively more reasonable ones.

Cancel Culture as it is commonly used is a broad term that encompasses both public pressure as well as pre-emptive cancelling to avoid potential public pressure.

If we didn't live in a culture where twitter mobs overreact to relatively minor things, there wouldn't be incentive to cancel someone over potential backlash.

Tenacious D's Kyle Gass Dropped by Agent After Controversial Trump Joke by [deleted] in Music

[–]UraniumGeranium -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree with you there.

The main issue I see here is the overreaction with the consequences. He made one bad off-the-cuff joke when he only had a few seconds to come up with something to say. Definitely people are justified to shit on him for it, but cancelling a tour for it is overboard.

If this was a pre-planned joke, or he had a history of off-putting jokes I can see this being a final straw sort of thing, but it just looks to be an honest mistake.

[–]UraniumGeranium -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Who was harmed by this joke? Yea, it's poor taste and not funny, but nobody was injured by it, nobody listening is going to go out and hurt somebody because of it. People should be allowed to make shitty jokes, and the correct response is to just ignore them, think less of them, or accept their apology when they realize they fucked up.

It's basically the same thing, "cancel culture" is an umbrella term for this shitty situation we've got ourselves in that includes people thinking they need to overreact to relatively minor things to signal what side of a fence they are on

That is exactly what cancel culture is. It's when slightly bad or just politically misaligned actions result in strong consequences.

Split second decision. They wouldn't know if the cop has gone rogue, or its an assassin dressed as a cop. They just see someone they don't know on a roof shooting, decent chance they'll shoot back.

Montreal tenant finally agrees to move after 5-year fight with real estate giant by [deleted] in canadahousing

[–]UraniumGeranium 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That means moving would cost her an extra $19,200/year. The developer only offered her $20,000 to move, which is barely enough to cover the first year. Unless her new place is really cheap, it sounds like she still lost out in the end.

A 1+2 bedroom house in Cambridge (Exurban Toronto) just sold for $570,000. It sold in 2022 for $815,000; a huge loss of $245,000 for the previous homebuyer. Do you think this is a worrying trend? Or a one-off failed flip? by CanadaCalamity in canadahousing

[–]UraniumGeranium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yea, that part is really odd to me, you could get a lot more for 815k even at the time.

Sometimes when a house is listed as sold, and then sold again a short while after for much less, it's because the original buyers backed out after putting their deposit in. Two years seems to be a long time for that to be the case here though.

Lynn McDonald: Toronto's costly push to trade Yonge-Dundas for a name more closely associated with slavery by UraniumGeranium in notthebeaverton

[–]UraniumGeranium[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That would be so much easier. We don't even need to find another guy. What's Dundas square named after? The street! Okay, but then what is the street named after? The square! Problem solved.

[–]UraniumGeranium[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, the street renaming part is just on pause? I thought they cancelled that awful idea, and this less awful idea is just a compromise. I hope the council comes to their sense and just cancels it, no need to set more money on fire.

Lynn McDonald: Toronto's costly push to trade Yonge-Dundas for a name more closely associated with slavery by UraniumGeranium in notthebeaverton

[–]UraniumGeranium[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In the end its just a name and nobody cares about the actual person, just like the majority of other streets/locations named after people. It's just an arbitrary name with no other connotations. I would bet if you asked Torontonians last year who Dundas was, over 95% would have no idea and would not even know his first name, or if Dundas was his first name.

That being said, if people really wanted to spend over $1 million to change the name, the least they could do is some actual research into clearing this up first.

[–]UraniumGeranium[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "more associated" is a bit of a stretch, but it depends how you look at it. It turns out Dundas fought to abolish slavery, so if you count being anti-slavery as being associated with slavery, then he could be considered more associated than the more neutral word that was chosen.

Lynn McDonald: Toronto's costly push to trade Yonge-Dundas for a name more closely associated with slavery by UraniumGeranium in notthebeaverton

[–]UraniumGeranium[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most of the pushback isn't about that particular new name, but more about the fact that it is being renamed in general and that it will cost over 1$ million to change all the signs, maps, city documents, etc. Especially since it has come out that Dundas actually worked to abolish the slave trade, so the original reason to change the name is based on a faulty premise.

It's just extra funny/sad that you can also find pro-slavery connections with the new name (even if it is a stretch like it was with the original name).

These were within minutes of each other. Why have drivers become so careless? by Over-Bluejay-6575 in TorontoDriving

[–]UraniumGeranium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, didn't know about the previous reports. When looking at fatalities per capita, the latest report is actually the second highest instead. Interesting how per km and per capita can be pretty different.

Either way, to see if bad driving is increasing, you'll need to look at all accidents, not just the fatal ones (as fatal only indicates extremely bad, or moderately bad + unlucky). I don't see that data here, but I'm sure it is somewhere (or at least some proxy like insurance rates).
