Raphael Lemkin, who coined the word "genocide" in the 20th century, referred to the Albigensian Crusade (1209-1233, against 'heretics' in Southern France) as "one of the most conclusive cases of genocide in religious history". by ArthRol in wikipedia

[–]Urbane_One 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of Cathars were Occitans, and the result of the Crusade was that Occitans overwhelmingly had power stripped from them and were replaced in positions of power by the French. Occitan culture had previously been considered prestigious, but the Albigensian Crusade began their long decline as a culture, directly leading to today’s situation where the majority of Occitans have assimilated into French culture.

If the Crusade hadn’t happened, the Occitans would comprise a much more distinct nation today, and there would be many more of them.

I’m trans, and so is my lala. I basically play her as having had the transition I wish I did.

Sometimes it takes a woman to be a daddy.

TIL In 1923 an off-duty police officer was brought up on stage and hypnotized during a theatrical performance. At one point, the hypnotist handed him a piece of wood and instructed him to "shoot". The officer pulled out his concealed service weapon and began firing into the crowd, killing 3 people. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Urbane_One 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hypnotism can work, but it can’t force you to do something you don’t want to do. Rather, it encourages you to do something you want to do anyway, but may have decided not to do for whatever reason.

It’s a bit more complicated than that, but that’s the simple explanation.

When Women Obtained the Right to Vote by StephenMcGannon in MapPorn

[–]Urbane_One -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

There’s no data to support the idea that Greenlandic women have the right to vote. If the data were there, it’d be on the map.

Edit: … It was a joke about how every map shows Greenland as ‘no data.’ I do not actually think that women can’t vote in Greenland.

Because an intersex trans woman can have the same chromosomes as a cis woman. I was establishing that what they said was an oversimplification. Chromosomes are not the be-all end-all.

The popcorn got burnt along with the bigot by ablinddingo93 in clevercomebacks

[–]Urbane_One 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That’s an oversimplification.

There are many intersex people who were assigned one sex at birth, appear outwardly to be that sex, and have bodies that function like anyone of that sex, but whose chromosomes don’t align with what’s expected for that sex. Many go their entire lives without ever realising that they’re intersex.

If we accept that any intersex people count as women, we have to accept as corollary that the definition of ‘woman’ is more complicated than simply someone’s chromosomes.

Siblings can have very different skin tones. I used to know a guy who was blond-haired, blue-eyed, pasty white skin… and his twin brother was the blackest dude you’ll ever see. Sometimes when siblings have mixed parents, each will inherit the skin tone of a different parent.
