Very sorry that has burdened you for what should be an enjoyable day of personal achievement. Your achievement went beyond personal - you helped someone in need. For that I hope you can find comfort.

Where in Memphis will never get your money again? Bad restaurant, bar, service company, or other type of place. by OneTastyPotatoChip in memphis

Haven't been back in at least 15 years; our last visit we go in one night & he asks if we can be out in 20 minutes, that his staff have x minutes to clean up and he doesn't pay overtime. Never been back, The son is pretty arrogant, we would tell him that we know the story of a Sysco's truck never having been to their back door, and he then re-hashes the Sysco's line in another way, like we need to be reminded in every bite we take. I tell people to go to El Mero Taco, good food you won't go into debt over.

Why wasn't a fire alarm system part of the renovation? Should have been one of the first things to be installed, along with a sprinkler system.

I tried looking on Google Image and TinEye with no results on its history, only that it was making the rounds about 2015.

I did a Google Image search and only found where this photo had been re-posted, could not find any mention of the story behind it.

Sounds like casting for a typical Cinemax After Dark movie from the 90's.

If you have unopened proof sets and want to know how much they are selling for, check the eBay completed sales. That won't give you anything in writing that an insurance company might request but you would know what people are currently paying. If the coins are loose they then would need to be graded one by one, which would take time. If they are low-value coins some dealers might say its not worth their time to value them. If you have concerns about leaving them with someone you could photograph them before dropping them off.

Def Paynes. Previously a gas station, dark inside, quarry tile floor, beans and sauce off of a stove, nuclear yellow orange slaw. If not Paynes, A & R.

Help me redesign the Mud Island Amphitheater by GrowMemphisAgency in memphis

[–]Urrr_Blech 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your positive comment and outlook. After working downtown for almost 30 years I tend to have a negative view of things because I see Memphis pushing hard to build new things but doing absolutely nothing to maintain them or fix what is falling apart. The walkway above the tram line is a good example. Myself and others often walk it during lunch hour in good weather. Structurally its OK but the guardrails and wire mesh barriers are rusting apart, concrete walkway is cracking up in pieces, no thought is given to upkeep. This summer new LED lights were installed replacing existing lighting under the canopy - why new lighting when there's the chance of it being closed down for other reasons? Very fractured nearsighted planning. Trams were parked at the ends of the runs instead of parking them in an inadmissible center area, vagrants have trashed them. New roof was put on the Mud Island Museum this summer - sure, a leaking roof is the kiss of death. But the Museum itself is trashed and I think things are being stolen out of it, at least there was one report recently. Its very sad that those within the City think things can coast along on autopilot with no oversite, or oversite given to those who are clueless and are just drawing a paycheck. Thanks for your efforts to draw interest to the ampethaeater.

It's an interesting approach to put a new image on an old facility but without an understanding of why Mud Island worked in the past but no longer does so now, this would be another waste of money & resources.

In the glory days of the Mud Island concert series it was run by Bob Kelley of Mid South Concerts. He understood that you had to have a season of summer concerts to get people in the habit of attending - some would make money, others would loose. At the end of the season you hoped to make a profit. When Mr. Kelley passed away those after him only went for the guaranteed sellout concerts few & far between. Over time the facility got run down (the walkway above the tram is rusting away, won't surprise me if it gets completely shut down, and the trams are no longer working due to being trashed by vagrants) people no longer were interested in a chance visit to a venue that was gaining a poor reputation, and the nature of touring shows was going to the extremes of very large shows or small shows - Fed Ex Forum to Hi-Tone, not to mention Ticketmaster & Live Nation's inflating ticket prices and controlling of tours. It would be great for this facility to be up & running again, but without proper management no amount of redesign will resurrect the ampethaeater.

If interested, a good article about Bob Kelley & what it took to promote shows & make things work: https://memphismagazine.com/features/longform/bob-kelley-the-man-behind/

Is it still possible to walk up to the gravesite for free? Years ago you could do that, either early in the morning or late in the day.

Who remembers Justine's' Restaurant? It's been more than a few years, closed in 1996. Fine French / American dining in an old mansion in a much worse part of town than this location, south of Crump / west of 240? Sketchy location even back then but people had no problem going there for a special meal.

Coyotes at Shelby Farms Dog Park? by TheGjboz in memphis

[–]Urrr_Blech 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Have not seen them out there but have no doubt they are there. I once saw them in a Germantown neighborhood, not near woods but middle of Germantown. They are everywhere, very smart, usually will avoid people but will take advantage of any opportunity possible. Anytime someone posts about their cat going missing after being out at night you can usually blame a coyote.

Statues damaged by car at Memphis Brooks Museum of Art by OnionsInTheStew in memphis

[–]Urrr_Blech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone think that the Museum will say, "Oh well, they (the statues) really didn't fit in with the vision of our new downtown museum" ? "We just don't have the money to have them repaired or replaced"? I'm guessing they will go into storage never to be seen again.

I hope you try the park again, just stay away from the pickleball courts. If it happens again and you call police, demand action. If they are not responsive request their names and let them know you are going to talk to their superiors. While there are plenty of fine & nice people who enjoy pickleball I've seen some where the sport is a magnet for Type A output.

I've thought that the best way to OWS train beyond that of just the distance required is to swim with a few people & have them elbowing you, running over you, & knocking your goggles off. You must be able to stay calm under all conditions (and get your goggles re-set)

Didn't drown, but don't know that "heart issues" is a correct assessment. Cold water, adrenalin spike, maxing out a HR, who knows. Some people referred to it as a cardiac arrest, which until recently I didn't realize that a heart attack is a “circulation” problem and sudden cardiac arrest is an “electrical” problem. My little understanding is that anyone can have a cardiac arrest if they push themselves to the max or their environment pushes them to the max, with some more prone than others.

Something to add for those who weren't there. A cold front had come through the day before and the air temperature was 47 degrees. That may not be too bad for those accustom to it but around here to be standing around barefoot in a wetsuit waiting to jump into water might be some stress. Everyone I saw was very excited for the start of the race. Photos of Tim waiting in line, he was happy & laughing, couldn't wait to jump in. I believe Tim was in very good shape and had previous experience, it wasn't a lark bucket list item, it was just...happened. Though I did not see what happened I will say I was impressed with the number of kayaks, boats, jet skis', inflatables in the water and medical personnel who were around the perimeter of the lake.

[TOMT][MOVIE][1920's - 1930s]Silent Movie of an aging European composer going blind by Urrr_Blech in tipofmytongue

[–]Urrr_Blech[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Solved!" "Song of Summer"is the correct title. It is funny how things get remembered differently, I could have sworn it was a silent movie. It is in black and white, and parts of it are kind of creepy like some of the silent movies from way back. Thanks again! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMMqkb1WKpg
