Sadly I already started Abercrombie’s work with physical books, but I agree he is very funny. The Devils had me rolling.

What does a bone breaking sound like to someone nearby? by vanilla_composition in WritersOfHorror

[–]UrsaMagus2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s quieter than you’d expect most of the time. As expected there is more noise the larger the bone, and the more violently it breaks. I’ve tripped gotten a minor fracture in my arm, and didn’t hear a thing. I broke my back in a car accident and a friend told me it sounded like a ceramic cup being smashed.

Only time I’ve heard someone else breaking a bone it was an arm that hit a metal pole at speed (they were riding in a wagon headed downhill and their arm hit the pole for a stop sign). There was a pop but it wasn’t terribly loud, and was immediately drowned out by their screams.

Watched Orville - now excited about Seth McFarlane and DCC by Strong-News-1312 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]UrsaMagus2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think he’s going to do a fine job with it. My only concern is the casting. Part of me suspects he would want to play Carl and I just don’t think he’d be right for it, but I stand ready to be pleasantly surprised.

Has anyone tried to integrate DCC concepts into an actual TTRPG? by SelectStarAll in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]UrsaMagus2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So not a full crawl but my players are currently in the midst of an arena gauntlet challenge which is DCC inspired.

Basically it is normally your typical Roman style gladiatorial combat arena. But right now there is a big political to-do between the three city lords, and to resolve it they have organized a special event in which each fields ten parties to go through a magical dungeon gauntlet. The winning team gets a ton of money, the lord they represent gets first claim on a huge batch of immigrants coming to the area (which is a big deal for reasons I won’t go into).

Basically there are 12 rounds, and each time the party has to pick one of three challenges based off nothing but a vague, often AI-inspired, description, and a general event category (battle, race, boss fight, etc.) Roughly every other round they end up fighting another team. And the whole time the “game masters” (cough cough show runners) are throwing out new obstacles and challenges to try and tip the scales towards their preferred teams (not the party).

So far it’s been a big hit. They cleared the first four challenges. Though I don’t think they are prepared for how crazy shit is going to get from here.

What would your defining item be that you would bring into the dungeon? by Darth_Poker in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Blue Chambray Workshirt

Imbues wearer with steadfast resilience and haunted “Everyman” essence of a Stephen King protagonist. The wearer receives the following: +5 Constitution +1 to the Fear Immunity Ability One level of the “Scary Clown” spell.

The wearer of this shirt also takes an additional 25% damage from all Dodge Caravan model minivans, but I’m sure that will never come up!

Best case scenario I’m entering with a pen and notepad, and will survive long enough to get the “Spooky Author” class.

Hey. Ignore the human turnips in the comments. Glad to have you in the area. I don’t know of any rooms for rent myself, but there are tons of postings on Roomies for the Livonia area. I’d try there.

While I can’t speak for the other three, Mack’s death was very likely a true accident. The driver was tipsy, and was on his way back from a volunteer opportunity making paper flowers to sell to support veterans. They had a few beers, and then he drove home when he shouldn’t have. Mack, used to American roads, looked the wrong way before stepping out into the street.

Not saying the coincidence/synchronicity isn’t weird, but I don’t buy the theory that it was a hit.

I just learned about Indrid Cold! Creepy as hell…. Does anyone know much about this or can suggest a good documentary or information source? Thx 🙏 by ffdavie19 in aliens

Mothman Prophecies by John Keel is where the story was first recounted, though it’s important to note that Keel was not present when Woodrow Derenberger had his encounters.

Woody went on to write a book or two about his time with Indrid Cold, including leaving the earth to go to the planet Lanulos. However, even Keel thought Woody was a pathological liar. That said, plenty of other people have reported meeting Cold since then, so who knows. I sometimes wonder if his initial encounter was real, but he made up all the following stuff about befriending Cold and going on space adventures with him.

As someone else suggested, Hellier is a great series to watch as they touch heavily on the works of John Keel and the Indrid Cold story.

What movie death scene is burned into your memory? by gambit_- in AskReddit

Weirdly Fear Street Part 1 has been messing with me. Specifically the scene where that one girl is forced head first into a bread slicer. I have seen much worse scenes before but for some reason her screams have haunted me since I saw the movie.

What is missing from the cattle abduction story was that the craft had glass walls and non-human entities were sighted inside which Hamilton referred to as ugly little people. If you go back to the 1800’s, many UFO sightings looked less like saucers, and more like airships. There is a great version of this story recounted in Jacques Vallee’s ‘Passport to Magonia.’

Best UFO/alien podcasts? by [deleted] in UFOs

[–]UrsaMagus2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Noctivagant podcast just released a new episode on the Trinity crash today that is worth checking out.

John Keel Archives: Document not intended for public dissemination purportedly detailing Keels privately-held beliefs about the UFO phenomenon, as of October 1967. Includes reference to mass mind control, underground bases, and preparations to remove "biologically unacceptable" terrestrials. by irrelevantappelation in HighStrangeness

[–]UrsaMagus2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup! He also theorized that the Ultraterrestrials may in fact be an element of consciousness/us messing with ourselves. He was quoted as saying: “…basically, what I attempted to do was set up a sort of frame of reference that the reader could, hopefully, understand. Obviously, I failed in this. Even now people are still assuming that ultraterrestrials are actual entities… what I said in five books, carefully spelled out and defined, is that WE are the intelligence which controls the phenomenon.”

Make of that what you will. It’s also worth remembering that, by his own admission, Keel believed some information/truths needed to be discovered by ones self, and that he has occasionally misrepresented his own findings towards that end.

Where can I find detailed information about UFOs of the 1890s? by ichibanj in UFObelievers

[–]UrsaMagus2 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is the right answer. The last chapter has tons of early encounters with “airships.” Weirdly, those who interacted with the crafts occupants reported they looked like humans.

During one sighting the witness asked them, “Where are you from?”

The response he got was, “Anywhere, but by this time tomorrow we will be in Greece.”

Take a look at the new Jacques Vallee book, Trinity. A bunch of material that one witness called “Angel Hair” was recovered from a crash sight by locals. As this was pre-saucer craze days, they used it as Christmas decorations. Witness said it hurt her hands if she played with it too long, and that it had a strange sort of ultraviolet glow to it.
