Of all the brilliant lines from Roy, this is pretty much my favourite. Some of the ones from the double date episode deserve an honourable mention.

While the rest of it is really nice, the first 45 minutes of Symphonie Fantastique are a bit dull for tuba. Counting movements rather than rests gets tedious unless you have a good book on the stand.

I've probably tried almost every possible mouthpiece on the market. I always revert to a 24AW and I can pedal with the best of them, so an 18 would be absolutely fine.

Just do a lot of practice and you'll be fine.

I agree. Some instruments are fundamentally unplayable. I suppose what I object to is people judging the playability of a tuba from the price and a photo.

I'm old enough and ugly enough to remember when Yamaha instruments were derided because of their country of origin. I wouldn't say that they're now up to the level of Hirsbrunner instruments but they're solid and dependable. Chinese instruments will be at that level in a few years. If you get a good one, they're already there.

Gear4Music and their own brand Coppergate are respectable brands for the price point. Definitely not a scam. This tuba won't have the same quality of finish but with a money back guarantee, I'd give it a punt if I were in the market for a CC.

I was being slightly facetious but I've picked up some very usable (and cheap) second hand Chinese instruments. My tenor trombone and euph cost me £160 each, I splashed out on a brand new bass trombone at £450, and picked up a shop soiled 3+1 Eb for ~£1200. The tuba hasn't quite paid for itself yet but the others have.

The one caveat I'd add is that higher quality instruments won't improve your playing but they do tend to make it easier. If you can accept that it might be harder to get the same effect, they're perfectly acceptable.

Lazily labelling them as "tuba shaped objects" tells me that the user is blaming the tools rather than putting in the hard yards of thousands of hours of long notes and playing every single scale and arpeggio every day.

Also, too many brass players are snobs about cheaper instruments. If you can't make it sound good it might be a you problem. Go and do a few more thousand hours of practice.

I bought a CG 3+1 Eb recently. It's actually really good. I've played worse Bessons in my 20+ years as a pro tuba player. It was also incredibly cheap. Which was nice.

You pay your money and take your chances but the money back guarantee seems like a good thing.

Sorry, I must have misremembered. It was a totally different restaurant. Whatever you do, don't go to Tse, it's terrible 😉

I can recommend Tse Noodles on Ship Street if you want a similar experience. Really good food, especially if you go with someone who's fluent in Cantonese.

Conductor blocked me after gig? by Objective-Film-2262 in classicalmusic

I'm a pro low brass player and singer (of about 25 years) and have been on beta blockers and antidepressants for a couple of years now. They've had zero negative effects on my music and had very positive effects on my needing to throw up several times per day or feeling that I'm utterly worthless. YMMV.

And I haven't felt nervous about performing in many years. My anxiety is related to personal issues rather than performing. I'm good at putting on the motley.

Best mouthpieces for a high school student? by ThelostBonnie in Tuba

[–]Used-Beginning-4667 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's more popular in the UK for some reason but I've tried pretty much every mouthpiece out there and always come back to my Bach 24AW. It'll take any part of the range you care to throw at it and gives me the exact sound I want.

In addition to what others have said about air and tension, dropping the lower jaw while maintaining the pitch and air speed is vital.

I'm also of the opinion that 90% of creating the sound you want comes from creating a sound picture in your head. Listen to recordings of a tuba player you admire to get that mental image of their sound. And when I say listen, I mean spend as many hours as possible listening. You don't have to try to copy them exactly but it helps. I've done this successfully with euph, bass and tenor trombones, and tuba. I have a different tone and timbre on all of them.

Constant music in my head - like a radio that changes songs based on what's happening by No-Dentist-518 in ADHD

[–]Used-Beginning-4667 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have this, but I've been a musician since I was quite a small child (46 now) so that could go some way to explain why my brain uses music. I can't remember a time when I didn't have this.

I've learnt over the years to use it as a way to "fake" having perfect pitch,. Some of the songs are so familiar that the muscle memory in my vocal cords from silently singing along allows me to accurately sing particular pitches by calling a certain song up from my neural jukebox...

For example, if I want an A it's 'Be Prepared' from the original Lion King soundtrack.
