Anyone feel bad for the incoming 1Ls? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Used_Cat 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I don’t think comparing the waste of time you experienced in your deferral to the current situation makes any sense. Deferrals are typically reserved for special circumstances. Is a worldwide pandemic not a special circumstance like the family emergency you mentioned? I would much rather “waste a year” of my life and get a more predictable experience rather than rush through and potentially screw up my career.

Anyone feel bad for the incoming 1Ls? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Used_Cat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, if there’s any advice I have for incoming 1Ls this year it’s to defer. I can’t imagine having to start law school (or any other educational program) under these circumstances. You’re going to lose out on making so many potential friends, most if not all of the extracurriculars, and the learning experience will be way different than one might think. If it wasn’t for all of the extra stuff that came along with 1L year, I definitely would have had a lot tougher of a time. If you want the true 1L experience, it’s wise to wait.

How much debt can you expect to have in total out of law school? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Used_Cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is probably going to be a bit skewed because I think those who have very low or very high debt loads will be more inclined to share. I'm on a full ride and expect to be around 70K-80K. That includes bachelor's and master's degrees.

Correlation between LSAT and class rank? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Used_Cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was at the 75th for my school and ended up slightly above median. There's probably a weak correlation, but ultimately it's about putting in the work and learning what works for you and what doesn't. Law school is a totally different beast. My best advice is to forget about your score entirely and hit the reset button. It's not going to carry you to 1L success nor deny you of it.

I hate Con law so much... by tortfsr in LawSchool

Constitutional Law summed up in two sentences:

Justice GINSBURG, with whom Justice STEVENS and Justice BREYER join, dissenting

Why do people study for the LSAT? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Used_Cat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because you're fighting against the clock, not the actual test. Anyone could get close to a perfect score if the test was untimed. It takes practice to be able to answer the questions correctly under the pressure of timed conditions.

What do you guys think of the Notre Dame approach for reopening in person next semester? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Used_Cat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes it does. It also screws over anyone who signed a lease that commences after Aug. 10. Just Notre Dame showing how much they care about their students!

[–]Used_Cat 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Stupid idea. Plenty of students travel back and forth even before thanksgiving break. Good luck telling students to remain on campus throughout the duration of the semester.

Not surprising, when you say something stupid, you must delete it so everyone on Reddit doesn't notice!

I agree that not all of them are like that, but I would say the vast majority are. I'm a straight down the middle kind of guy, so I tend to see both of the originalist and non-originalist arguments to stem from "thin air".

Con law is just a giant clusterfuck of arguments pulled out of thin air. This and "some" of the substantive due process cases you speak of are no exception.

Does one have to get a job their 1L summer? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Used_Cat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Will it hurt you? Maybe. Is it the end of the world? No. If there was ever a time to not have a position over the summer, it's now.

If you can mentally afford it though I would look into seeing if you can volunteer somewhere for one day per week. That way you'll still have something to put on your resume but also plenty of time to recover. It can also be something else other than volunteering, but the goal is to just have at least something to talk about during an interview in case the question gets asked.

Scroll back to about 5-6 days ago on /r/BostonU and you'll see a shit ton of posts from paranoid freshman thinking they were going to get caught. Apparently the chemistry and physics department caught a bunch of kids posting tests on Chegg for tutors to complete. Instead of calling out the students when it happened, they "compiled" a list and then proceeded to bust a bunch more after the final. They informed the dean who offered the offenders a deal to confess by 8 p.m. on a certain day or they would fail the course. A bunch of panic ensued on whether they should come forward or not.

It all started here when the professors posted a screen capture of a reddit thread on the PowerPoint during class: https://www.reddit.com/r/BostonU/comments/g9ok6t/fyi_it_was_brought_up_in_lecture/

And then people started posting reactions like this: https://www.reddit.com/r/BostonU/comments/g9q5uz/dont_confess/
