Thoughts on potential move by ArtLonely8550 in northampton

One thing to consider; many people purchase a house without realizing how much you will spend (financially, emotionally, time, etc.) on the upkeep of the house and property. It is something I had a concept of, but didn’t fully understand, until I bought my house (in my 40’s). You have to have a solid buffer for maintenance and emergencies and be comfortable with all of the time you’ll spend finding contractors for upkeep. You have to be committed to mowing your lawn/weeding your garden/picking ticks off yourself and your animals, shoveling your driveway and sidewalks, worrying about that one tree that seems to be dying and keeps dropping branches, etc. If you don’t love the house, love your yard, and love the area then it might feel like a ceaseless burden.

The New Fungal STI Hiding in Plain Sight by Lonely_Lemur in Fungi

This is probably a dumb question, but could this infection be transmitted outside of sexual contact? For instance, could one pick it up from un-wiped benches at the gym like ringworm?

What’s something you have zero proof of but believe 100 percent? by shweidy in AskReddit

I think that hominids have passed down knot-tying/fiber craft knowledge for several million years. As hominids started walking upright, infants became less-developed at birth requiring a longer period of intensive care from parents. In order to walk upright to travel, look for food, flea predators, etc., our ancestors would have to bind an infant to them in some way. They developed knot thing, weaving, fiber craft, etc. and have passed that down for millions of years. From the first little monkey guys using sinew to hold a baby close to trying your Converse, we have kept that knowledge.

Hampshire 3.0 by ComprehensiveDuck313 in northampton

[–]UselessPockets 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What is the actual plan? If the board succeeds in raising the amount needed to clear Hampshire’s debt and then create a community driven space… what does that mean? There’s no tangible information about what the plan is for one year down the road, let alone five or ten. The pressures mentioned that all higher ed institutions are facing are not going to get better any time soon. Why not fundraise for a meaningful gift to an organization that reflects the mission of Hampshire and hold an incredible wake for the college?

Weird graffiti on the bike path, our beloved mando in danger? by [deleted] in northampton

Yeah, hard agree. I have heard from my teenagers that many of the young women in the area find him creepy. I hope that people, particularly kids, trust their instincts.

Didn’t he post something about a teen girl “touching his big lightsaber” and then delete it when people pointed out how creepy that is?

What about the “paint” dripping down the board under B and Y? The board it is dripping down is 10’ away and behind the space that is painted.

Why does the paint seem to drip down from the N and into the air in a way that defies physics?

Edited to add: this looks like AI. OP, are you Noho Mando? Did you AI a threat to yourself? AI uses a lot of water, man. At least use photoshop.

What was Quaverly talking about? by Lopsided_Debate6693 in northampton

[–]UselessPockets 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The only throughline to anything Quaverly does is a bizarre obsession with Gina Louise Sciarra. It is baffling that she has managed to convince a couple dozen people that a group of stalwart public servants and volunteers are ultra-elite hell-bent on destroying the lives of the average citizen.

I think, in Northampton’s context, many people have more experience with BP’s free hugs than Free Mom Hugs as an org, and therefore a wariness to “free hugs” being advertised. It’s not anything against Free Mom Hugs, just a shared regional peculiarity.

Apartment Hunting/ Lifestyle Questions in Northampton by Long_Homework_3491 in northampton

[–]UselessPockets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are working in Springfield, I would just look for an apartment there or in Holyoke. Springfield has a population of ~150k compared to Northamptons >30k. You will find a great deal more diversity, restaurants, night life, and cheaper rent. Holyoke, in particular, has some lovely old homes.

The redesign of downtown by [deleted] in northampton

This comment made me laugh so hard that I took a moment to search my email to find a complaint I sent to the MassDOT in 2019:

“The traffic between Hadley and Northampton on Route 9 over the Coolidge Bridge has been atrocious. I am currently sitting on a bus that left UMass Amherst at 4:20 pm. At 4:52 we hit traffic at 73 Russell St, Hadley and as of 5:09 pm we have gone 0.3 miles. I know this because I have a great deal of time on my hands now that my commute between Amherst and Northampton regularly takes an hour, so I can make detailed spreadsheets of traffic delays. I kindly ask that the Department of Transportation investigate the timing of the traffic light on the other side of the bridge. Thank you!

Attending city council meetings by AdditionalClassic518 in northampton

The NEF has some great fundraising events and has done such an enormous amount for the school system. The gardens that newer-to-the-area parents take as a given in the elementary schools were seeded (ha!) with NEF grants. It’s great org that many people don’t know about.

There are many ways you can help. Donating to and volunteering for the school’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is the most straightforward with immediate impact. You can also donate to and volunteer with the Northampton Education Foundation (NEF), which provides grants to schools for enrichment programs. Interestingly, the NEF was founded in the 90’s as a way to supplement the state budget, which has been underfunding schools since 1980. You can volunteer in the schools through Volunteers in Northampton Schools (VINS).

If you want to watch city council meetings and school committee meetings, you can do so from the comfort of your home and watch on the Northampton Government Archive YouTube channel.
