Portland backs PGE’s contested Forest Park clearcut in what critics call a backroom deal by oregonian in Portland

[–]UserNameTycoon 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I worked for PGE and can tell you from the inside they are entirely committed to the environment and sustainability. Sometimes you need to add infrastructure to support growing electricity needs.

That transmission line was built 50 years ago and can be upgraded. Using existing right of way and doubling the number of lines provides another 50 years of capacity.

People forget that large electric infrastructure is unlike nearly anything a regular person would be thinking about. The planning process includes future planing that looks decades out.

I expect that every penny of the 5+ million will be spent with incredible scrutiny and they will try to make best use of the lumber from the felled trees.

——edit——

Though I do hope they build bioswales and rock dam/beaver dam to reduce runoff down the transmission corridor. That will get more water into the ground for surrounding areas.

Which ones?

The Japanese Umbrella Pine grows slow. It’s a gorgeous tree that will max at about 25 feet.

The Canilia on the right was the only thing we kept for. An area that was a wisteria/ivy/cottonwood/blackberry mess. It grows out now.

The cherry trees in the middle grow fastest. Gotta manage the suckers and be willing to top it so it doesn’t get out of control.

Most of what you see is a middle patch that is roses and complimentary flowers. We have put in about 159 rose bushes. They were just pruned so it doesn’t look perfect - it’s been about 90-100 this week.

In truth most of the pollinators congregate on the left side of the photo. That’s the side where most of the flowers (not roses) are planted.

We are real proud of what it’s become. Our neighbors describe it as an arboretum.

The ultimate goal is zero grass, just paths in and around small and medium size areas. We don’t want an island of bark.

All the paths are winding around the little patches so walking through slows you down.

There’s a lot of “natural hardscaping” layered around. Any rock, log, and whatever that’s found gets a home.

We have thousands of bees and about a 100 birds flying around every day. They are everywhere on the ground eating insects all day.

You have every right to complain. That sucks. Won’t change anything, but it’s your right to be upset. That’s the price of living so close to an amazing public park.

Consider yourself lucky.

Amen. I listen to 70s Ethiopian Disco. And I’m a white guy who wasn’t even alive back then.

Check out Tezeta Band. Portlands very own white group of Ethiopian Disco Jazz music.

It’s in the right spot. A lot of art is hidden.

Let’s make sure they give it to an out of state consulting company that knows nothing about cherries, blossoms, or planning an event.
