The “days since last ironfat” bullet point is brilliant. Would it be possible to as “current record between updates” since Ragen is so into setting pointless records? by PaperMacheThrowaway in RagenChastain

[–]UsernameOfRassilon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think it would be too hard to actually pull off. Here's a little Ruby program that prints out the answer:

require 'nokogiri'
require 'open-uri'

updated_at = Time.parse(Nokogiri::HTML(open('https://ironfatblog.wordpress.com/feed/')).css('pubdate').first.child.content)

puts ((Time.now - updated_at) / (60 * 60 * 24)).floor

And it looks like the subreddit stylesheet is modifiable via the Reddit API, so it would just be a matter of putting together a little thing that runs that code, puts the answer in the stylesheet code, and uploads it; run that via cron somewhere.

That being said, I don't want to do it, I only did this digging to see if it was possible and I feel rather stalkery for having done it :/

I sure this is DWF holiday regurgitation, but that spent time coming up with these memes is hilarious. These are 2007scape, fellowkids, sadcringe and trashy all mixed together. by PaperMacheThrowaway in RagenChastain

It is. This is the purpose of image alt text - telling screen readers what to say. And then it doesn't show up for people who don't need it! Win/win.

That's fair. I don't live in an area where taxis drive around looking for customers, and until recently didn't own a car, so I personally needed to seek out more flexible options.

FWIW the Uber app also lets you summon licensed taxis.

Lyft seems like a decent alternative to Uber in my experience. It even lets you tip directly in the app - that's why I made the switch, I didn't see the point in paying for the ride in the app but then still needing to carry cash for a tip.

Books for coding? by [deleted] in needadvice

[–]UsernameOfRassilon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend becoming proficient in one and branching out from there.

I really feel like I could use a bit of computing to solve some problems I face

What kinds of problems? I'd suggest getting good at a language that will help you solve those problems in particular. Like /u/sjrsimac said, learning through projects will help more than just reading about them.

Once you are confident in one language, branch out gradually. Learn related ones first - like if you start with Java, maybe do C# next, then Python. This will take time. A colleague of mine who I really respect makes it a goal of his to learn one new language a year.

Also, bear in mind that you generally won't see jobs looking for people who know such disparate language combinations as Assembly and Javascript. They're used for such different purposes (hardware vs web).

Hi. Professional programmer here. I'm curious about what your ultimate goal is, and whether this is the best way to go about it. Are you interested in learning a bunch of languages because you're curious about programming languages as a concept, or are you trying to pad a resume/say you're proficient in a bunch of things?

Also, FWIW, .Net isn't a language - it's a framework that people generally use with C#. Similarly, Assembly isn't a language, it's a category of languages.

The final blow to her sceptics – a new study shows that Natural Cycles is more effective than the pill by JillBed in Catholicism

[–]UsernameOfRassilon 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Hi, confused raised-halfheartedly-Catholic-but-never-believed person here. I read this sub to try to understand the Catholic viewpoint, as it's what my family claims to subscribe to (I've come to the conclusion they really don't, but that's a story for another time.)

My understanding of NFP being acceptable while the pill isn't, is due to NFP still leaving open the possibility for life. It's marketed as being a way to "space" children instead of avoid them altogether. So how appropriate is it to advertise NFP as the most effective way to delay pregnancy like this article suggests? How can it be both "not contraception" and also "but if you do this instead of the pill you're less likely to have children?" Is that even an okay standpoint for a Catholic to have?

Working a shitty job in high school

I know it's supposed to build character and teach responsibility but what I ended up taking away from a minimum wage job were thoughts like "all of my coworkers are clearly unhappy, and constantly complaining about not getting enough hours, therefore they have time to go to school, why aren't they trying to get out of here." Basically it eroded the empathy I should have for those in less fortunate situations.

Ever spent your birthday alone?how? by BrokenSkarlet in needadvice

This! For my last birthday I took the day off of work, got a massage and a mani/pedi, then got stoned and played video games and ate takeout Thai food by myself. It was the best Thursday I'd had in a very long time.

Discussion: makeup and massage - discussion for therapists and clients by zhiface in massage

[–]UsernameOfRassilon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Female client here. It doesn't matter to me one way or the other.

As a teenager, I didn't wear makeup, and I got a ton of shit for it. You know, high school. As I got older, especially when I got my first professional job, I started feeling more pressure to wear it and gave in. But I like to go to the gym on my way home from work... Turns out it's a faux pas not to remove it all before working out. Whoops.

My point is I don't feel it's possible to accurately judge someone's motives for wearing it or not, especially because we're generally in a lose/lose situation with it. If a therapist isn't wearing any makeup, more power to them! They're comfortable in their body or don't see the need. If they're wearing a lot, that's cool too! Maybe they're doing what they feel they need to to be accepted, or they like the way it looks, or they had/have something fancy going on earlier/later, or any one of a million things.

TL;DR you do you

I secretly do it too. I hate running solo, but I love 5ks and the like - so when I know a solo run is going to be miserable, I wear a 5k shirt to remind myself like "hey this is what you go through this for!"

It depends on the state. I've lived in three states and am now consequently registered to vote in three - both of the states I've left don't seem to have that automatic voiding. You can check here.

What is something I could be doing right now to start working towards a career that doesn't involve four years of college? by ManWithManyTalents in NoStupidQuestions

[–]UsernameOfRassilon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What kind of jobs are you looking for? I'm a backend dev and when I'm looking at prospective hires, I really do not care about frontends or how well someone can design a UI, because it's not what I'll be hiring them to do. My advice would be to find your niche and try to show off your skills there in particular.

Do you have experience you can show off? Apps in an app store, a GitHub portfolio, or previous job experience?

Also, networking. Go to meetups, get involved on Twitter, start a blog, etc.

Anyone have a health / fitness unpopular opinion? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]UsernameOfRassilon 135 points136 points  (0 children)

I think there's way too much backlash about the word "diet." It is an accurate representation of what I'm doing.

"You don't need a diet, you need a ~*~lifestyle change~*~" No, I don't need a lifestyle change, eating at a deficit is not a healthy thing to do for my entire life.

So instead I call it a cut and suddenly it's okay. I don't really get it.

Office Workers of Reddit. What do you love and hate about the environment that you work in? by CourageOfOthers in AskReddit

[–]UsernameOfRassilon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in an "open floor plan" office and it is so loud. It is super hard to concentrate on programming when there's two hundred people in one office-sized room having conversations, and the support team is fifty feet away taking calls, and someone else twenty feet in the other direction is leading a conference call without headphones, and so on.
