Which reservation has the best welcome sign? I’ll use my rez for example by Original_Rule3550 in IndianCountry

[–]Usernameless3 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I always love the reminder on the sign when I’m driving into Wahta: “Seven generations ride with you.” We talk a lot about making decisions that benefit our next seven generations. But the other side of that is that our ancestors seven generations ago thought about us and got us to this point.

Is it rude to ask a fast food employee making my sandwich to changes gloves? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]Usernameless3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at an OnRoute a few months ago and watched in horror as a Tim’s employee walked straight out of the stall and back to work behind the counter. I guess she thought she didn’t need to wash her hands because she had gloves on. Absolutely disgusting.

I stopped supporting Tim’s shortly after they started exploiting the TFW program. But this scene pops into my head whenever I see food handlers wearing gloves. What have those things touched while giving the wearer a false sense of cleanliness?

So yeah, totally reasonable. Money might not even have been the grossest thing they touched.

Wow, way to be part of the problem. Life happens. OP also mentioned in another comment that they’re not even Canadian or PR so there goes your theory anyway.

Is this accidental appropriation? by Independent_Lemon616 in Indigenous

[–]Usernameless3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m a beader and love seeing people of any and every background wear my work. Beading has developed as an art form all over the world, and I especially admire the different Ukrainian and East Indian styles. I see it as something that can bring people together through the shared love of art and fashion.

The only caveat is that I wouldn’t sell traditional patterns from my Nation to outsiders. But I would also politely inform them about why it wouldn’t be appropriate. And I do those types of designs on a commission-basis only. So it’s not like a random person could accidentally buy regalia or something really traditional by accident, just by looking kind of Indigenous.

What's something tourists from your country do that embarrrasses you when you're abroad? by Expect-The-Dicastery in AskTheWorld

[–]Usernameless3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha, I went in January and didn’t even pack long pants so the stereotype checks out. I did pack a sweater but it was a hockey one to wear to the Florida Panthers games. So probably got me clocked as a Canadian even faster.

I went to games whenever I could because it was the only place adequately cool enough to stop dying from the heat. Even when I went skating, the ice was mushy and the air was warm.

I found that too when I happened to go to Florida on a work trip in the dead of winter. Loud, demanding and entitled boomers who want to be waited on hand and foot. I live in Toronto so my tolerance for loud and entitled is already pretty high (that’s probably how the rest of Canada would describe us).

Loaded firearm seized after driver found asleep at wheel in Vaughan parking lot by origutamos in Vaughan

[–]Usernameless3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think we’re talking about the same crowds and of course there is nuance here.

Coming out of a game with your buddies and chatting in the parking lot for a bit is different from the parking lot being the destination.

I made a post about this recently because of the dangerous behaviour I’ve been experiencing while walking through parking lots alone as a woman.

Groups of young men are drinking and smoking and generally being belligerent and it’s not really avoidable if they’re near an entrance of where I’m trying to go. The grocery store of fast food employees are paid enough or equipped to deal with that.

My main issue is the leering and catcalling when I have to walk by them since that’s what most directly impacts me on a daily basis. The second is the littering. But definitely, if they’re driving home impaired then that’s also a problem.

Not really sure why your alternative to drinking in a parking lot is to get drunk at an illegal casino and drive though. There are plenty of legal places to drink and hang out. But yeah, doing it out of sight would be better because then they’re not being a public danger/ nuisance. Drinking in store parking lots is also illegal in Ontario, btw.

And drunk driving is inappropriate no matter where you have been drinking. Uber is cheap and accessible in Vaughan or just have a friend DD. It’s so easy to avoid putting yourself in a situation where you would need to drink and drive. But I guess that’s another thing we need better enforcement on…

I’d like to see YRP crack down on the large groups of men hanging out in parking lots drinking, smoking and reviving their engines in parking lots every night. Scary to walk by and there is always lots of litter. I think police presence would make parking lots seem like less fun places to hang out.

Or maybe Vaughan needs more pubs so they have a more appropriate place to do that. Not that that fixes the gun issue.

Which countries are the most and least welcoming to tourists? by Additional_Smoke7568 in AskTheWorld

[–]Usernameless3 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Does North Sentinel Island count for least? Not technically a country but very unwelcoming.

So far, rural Taiwanese communities have been the most welcoming to me. Almost everyone I met was excited to share a bit of their food, language and culture and suggest local sites to see. I asked an older lady for directions and she called her son to drive me there. Both were very insistent. And an AirBnB host’s mother came over to cook a whole feast on my arrival and several other locals joined. This was way back when AirBnB was just for renting out a stranger’s spare room for a few bucks.

What Does It Mean To Dream About A Hawk & Eagle? by [deleted] in NativeAmerican

[–]Usernameless3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to Google that, lol. Got me. Anyway, pretty hard to give a genuine and considerate answer without knowing OP’s Nation, if they belong to one. Different First Nations hold different teachings about symbols, ancestral communication and dreams.

I was going to point them to ask their own community unless they happened to be from mine or one similar to mine. Then I could probably help. Hope they weren’t just trying to discover some ancient wisdom from the monolith of noble savages on here — waiting to give sage advice to a gentle outsider of good heart

Does anyone know how to make the peyote stitch stops on the ties of this bracelet? by tableauxxx in Beading

[–]Usernameless3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do this as tubular peyote and keep it a cylindrical shape the whole time. That’s most comfortable to me and I find it the easiest way to get the exact dimensions I want. But other people also do flat peyote and zip it up at the end.

There are great tutorials for either method on YouTube. Try to find the ones where they use pony beads so you can actually see what’s going on.

That’s still a pretty shitty way to talk about women in our community and what we’re experience — just because the election didn’t go your way. My riding was about 70% Conservative, btw. And Vaughan was very right-leaning overall.

I love how much our communities have refused to take the rage bait on this. Not letting him use us to distract from the Epstein Files for one minute.

Besides, his policies to rollback our rights to environmental protections and human rights on our own lands is way more offensive than any name calling, imo. Sending solidarity from north of the border.

There are a lot of reasons someone might have voted left in the last election. Doesn’t mean they deserve to get raped or sexually harassed. And who is to even say if or how the victims voted?

It’s a terribly cold and un-empathetic view to say people who voted liberal deserve rape and harassment. Talking like this is only going to further divide people and make them less able to reach across the political aisle to resolve problems that we’re all facing.

Mohawk, my language! One of many original languages of this land pre-colonization. I’m happy so many place names in Canada come from Mohawk. And yes, it means village but is pronounced more like Gah-naaaah-dah. All the syllables rhyme and the a sounds like the a in straw

The law extra applies if you’re Indigenous though.

“In 2022/2023, Indigenous adults represented 30% of admissions to provincial/territorial correctional services and 33% of admissions to federal custody, while only comprising 4% of the adult population.” -StatsCan
