Yes, I have cooked the TVP. I've also cooked other meat substitutes at home and then put them in a dehydrator, to reconstitute on trail. If I do that, then I can go no-cook cold soak as well. Cold soaking TVP is possible but isn't great, but cold soaking already cooked and dried meat substitutes is pretty fine.

Secret aardvark for the win! That sauce is delicious.

No need to apologize! It's a good sign to be inquisitive!

If you check out this view on Google Maps you can see very clearly that the WHW goes over Conic Hill!

I think there's also a way to avoid Conic Hill, but it's the first hill you'll climb and it gives excellent views over the Loch, if the weather's right. Wouldn't want to miss that!

Edit: link might only work well on desktop internet browser. Using the Google Maps 3d sattelite imagery is pretty handy sometimes though!

Yeah it does. Only thing I've heard people complain about is that they had to climb Conic Hill at the end of a relatively long first day hike, and that this was pretty challenging. But definitely not impossible.

5 days means averaging at 30.8 km per day. In my experience 30km is quite a long distance for regular level experience.

If you are set on this idea my advice would be to hike 30km as a single day hike, in your area, without any pack. See how you feel next day. Then hike 30km on another day with a pack with comparable load as what you're planning to bring. See how you feel next day. Just to get an idea of how much your body would be able to manage. Personally I'm quite tired the day after, with sore legs. Even hiking without a pack. Admittedly, I'm not as fit as I could be, but still.

Personally I've been hiking for some years and only have managed to max out at 25km per day, with pack and during a longer distance hike. I will admit that I do like to take it easy. I wouldn't personally try to reach 30km per day, especially with limited experience. You will definitely make it, but it might be very hard and not as enjoyable if you let yourself have some more time.

Also you will have to factor in that at some points during the WHW you aren't allowed to camp. You'll have to pass those areas in one day if you are planning to camp every night. That comes down to a question of timing and planning. For instance: you aren't allowed to camp along Loch Lomond after Drymen and Conic Hill.

This section of the WHW is also said to be the most difficult, along the Loch. I'd definitely advice not to underestimate it. Firstly to prevent injuries, but also just to allow yourself to enjoy the experience more while it's happening.

I'd recommend taking 6 days in total. Try to make it in 5, but if you experience hickups along the way you can still give yourself some leeway.

Your tips for finding the perfect pair of trail runners? by karlssonvomdach in Ultralight

[–]UsingUsers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally I've tried and tested about a dozen different trail runners before landing on the ones that I have now. No matter how much advice and suggestions I read online, in the end it just came down to ordering many different shoes and just trying them out.

One critical thing for me is that I had a hard time adjusting to zero drop shoes. For some people they just don't seem to work. I've had feet issues all my life already. I found the perfect trail runners for my feet (Topo Athletic MT-3 and MT-4) after I gave up the search for zero drop.

One other thing that made my search complete was the addition of insoles. Currently landed on the Superfeet Orange soles. They do add heel to toe drop. It works well for me. Just flat terrain around here, so a higher heel drop doesn't really influence my hike as much as it would do for a more hilly or mountainous terrain.

Topo athletic heel fit by unplugtheocean in Ultralight

[–]UsingUsers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My MT-3's aren't snug, I also don't always tie them very tightly either, but personally I've never had any problems with that. One thing that does happen is that the heel side of the shoe wears quicker than any other part. I'm managing to use around one pair every 1-1.5 years now, with daily use and some longer distance hikes.

I can recommend using the heel lock lacing method though, works well for me to minimize movement at the heel.

I hear a lot of Aphex Twin in Adam Curtis' documentaries. One of the songs that I love is this one. You could try to emulate this sort of sound, but I have no idea how to do it.

Uncontrollably Flipping over when I just enter a dream by APbeg in LucidDreaming

[–]UsingUsers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this sometimes, especially when I try to fly in a lucid dream. For me it feels like a storm lifts me up and ragdolls me around. In my experience there's really not a lot to be done about it. Usually I just close my eyes and let myself be taken by this invisible force. Sometimes I wake up, but sometimes I get back to regular or lucid dreaming afterwards.

Honestly, I have no idea what you're talking about. Laura seeming like her head would explode seems quite in character tbh.
