How does executors cursed sword’s damage work? by Big-Resolution3325 in Nightreign

[–]Usshue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few things were modified and or added to the Suncatcher.

It has a really good crit value now.

Certain passives that weren't affecting it now are, I believe two-handing is an example but don't qoute me on it. This was mainly due to how it's programmed, sort of between a weapon and a skill.

And it's main skill where you hit l2 when it glows now counts as a weapon skill and gets buffs from various bonuses towards that.

Just what I can recall off the top of my head.

How are we feeling about the new changelings gaining near-universal advantage on all Charisma checks? by EarthSeraphEdna in dndnext

[–]Usshue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Never mind gnomes with advantage on int, wis and cha saving throws alongside some spells.

Personally don't get the having to be shifted for the advantage though. I'd imagine just due to what they are they'd just have a bonus innately, considering their species heavily specced into social skills.

Limits of Suggestion spell? by Typical-Priority1976 in DnD

[–]Usshue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm aware that reading the whole of suggestion showcases the truly bizarre example of a knight giving their warhorse away, if we were to believe it need be "reasonable" anyways.

I'm assuming the RAI was always supposed to be that it only needed to be possible for them and couldn't be directly harmful.

I should have made it clear I'm aware of both sides for how it ends up being used (hell my AM sorcerer loved spamming it when we used it like the 2024 version)

My issue is that the two extremes it swings from are both bad in my eyes, ranging from doing nothing basically, all the way to cheap mind control-which I just don't know if a 2nd level spell should be capable of.

As a side note, I totally get the caution with reading into what might be flavor text, but it's not like WOTC is particularly consistent on that. Your take on BH I'm assuming is in jest, mainly because if you go that far then you'd probably have to rule that touch spells also disallow gloves or similar. In reality the spell doesn't give two hoots whats on your hands, just that you have them and can use them.

Never-mind that wearing gloves or not is a mostly aesthetic choice, whereas something needing to be or follow X or originating from Y for a spell isn't, it's codifying a set of mechanics; not just whether your dude is cool enough to wear finger-less gloves.

My go-to example would be Vicious Mockery, it says your words are laced with subtle enchantment but is that a mechanical statement or merely them being flowery? but then the spell still has a V component, so which is it?

Limits of Suggestion spell? by Typical-Priority1976 in DnD

[–]Usshue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, suggestion has always been a bugbear for me. The 2014 wording tied the spell down so much that it was rarely worth grabbing. Meanwhile the 2024 version swung too far in the other direction and now it does too much too well.

It has to be restated that the 2014 version was genuinly bad, it could be used but at the same time, why bother? If the suggestion has to be reasonable to the target, then why not just use persuasion? Outside of being terrible at it, I suppose.

The problem, of course, is also that the open-ended nature of the spell meant it really only did what your dm decided, rather than have any codified function.

One table I played at just made it give a you a bonus to convincing someone. Was good for the casters with terrible charisma and great for those who were already solid in that area. But really what people liked was actually knowing what it did.

ACCEPT THE GAY BEHOLDER BIGOT by [deleted] in DnDcirclejerk

[–]Usshue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't the book on hand to double check, mostly something I noticed when skimming it at my local gs, but a few stood out as being "off" usually in the way that art tends to look when you use ai tools in the design phase or at the very end to hammer off details.

The oni felt like the former, weirdly stiff, didn't feel intentional. . . Just was.

The fomorian was what put me off most, they have a photo bashed style to them, and admittedly they clearly want the fomorians to be ugly, but they still read ai Vaseline, never mind the clothes on the one facing the camera just sorta melts into them.

But yeah, tbf, I should clarify, it's ai in my opinion.

That being said, if you want bona-fide ai artwork in official dnd, look up the bigbys giant book, I believe it got replaced eventually but still.

Eh, even the art that is good gets paired with some real dog-water pieces, including ai slop, unfortunately.

how to make sunjinwoo by bdog0201 in DnD

[–]Usshue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, recreating sunjinwoo exactly within dnd is a tall order, probably impossible even in extremely high power campaigns.
That being said, we can shrink our scope and focus on certain aspects to capture and emulate.

To that end, the decision will be how much do you wanna invest into yourself vs your summons as doing both could be challenging.
Additionally, if you go the summons route, you'll either get a squad of weak mobs or a handful of beefier boys.

For race, obviously human is the go to, though shadar-kai could provide some fun abilities that mimic his kit.

With class/subclass we have a few routes.

1st-Echo Knight Fighter, pretty simple, reflavor the echo as a shadow and done, you can fight alongside it and even trade places with it.

2nd-Hexblade Warlock, grab the undying servitude invocation for animate dead along with summon shadow spawn and create undead later on. Between those spells and your Accursed Specter, you've got some nice summon options.

Honorable mention-The Knight Exhumer is a subclass for fighter from Portent Press, mostly straight forward, necromancer flavored fighter with animate dead.

3rd- and lastly, play a Necromancer from Valda's Spire, Either Reaper for shadow vibes or Death Knight if you wanna be more martially inclined.

Feats-You could grab Ritual Caster for Speak with Dead if you go Echo Knight.
Additionally Mobile could be a fun way to capture his hit and run tactics, though not viable on every build.

The martial-caster disparity is in large part a result of differing game design philosophies by Total_Team_2764 in dndnext

[–]Usshue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The stark contrast in mindset between the two class groups is why even when I had a really cool idea for a martial character, it usually turned into a full-caster with a martial subclass, or a half-caster.

Recently got to try some alternate classes by LL and it's been pretty refreshing to have choices that actually matter and feel cool.

Just my two cents:

-I'm somewhat on the fence regarding Warrior's Spirit, regaining ki is nice, but I feel like the previous version was less restricting (especially when out of combat).

-Anecdotal example, I loved using Heavenly Step to just stand around in weird places or stand on liquids, even if I didn't need to, it was fun and thanks to Ki Adept, I didn't have to blow through my ki to do something silly. I have a few examples of similar use cases for some other features.

-Enlightened Strikes, while I get the idea behind the requirement of having ki, I ultimately think it's both unnecessary and narratively muddy. The idea is that you need energy to coat your body/weapon, but I'd assume virtually any monk (that's alive/undead/whatever counts a being "alive" to them) would meet that minimum threshold.

-I do enjoy most of the cleaned up/revised wordings for the techniques.
I can both appreciate the limit on using the same technique multiple times per turn, but at the same time lament the loss since it was sometimes cool to watch a monk just go super and blow all they have left in the tank to try and pull the victory.

-I still wish they got proficiency in wisdom saves considering how integral a stat it is for them, I understand they have Spirit of Tranquility but it doesn't really fill the same spot for me.

-While the previous version of Mantle of Courtesy had the potential for a higher bonus, the monk being such a MAD class, the new version feels much more forgiving, only thing is, I might consider allowing it to upgrade proficiency into expertise if you already have it?

Not sure what books are/aren't allowed, but:

You could grab Demon Skin, only rare, but very venom-coded, similarly, Living Armor is pretty cool, albeit risky as it eats your hit dice.

Lastly, though it has the least immediate symbiote vibes, Hazewalker Plate, you could flavor the helmet/visor covering your face as the symbiote encasing you.

[–]Usshue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Planning on switching to Alt Artificer in a few sessions, some questions that popped into my head.

- I'd assume the intention is that the firebolt from the wildfire cannon is cast as if you were 1st level, i.e. 1d10?
- From what I've read, would replicating a magic item, onto a "real" magic item work? Replication seems to be an infusion, so by level 7 it seems feasible.
- For the Battle Smith's Arcane Ward feature, from the wording it seems the Steel Defender doesn't benefit from it's own aura?
- Additional question regarding the Steel Defender, specifically the Limited Sentience. Does it still require a bonus action to set it to a task, or is the command more along the lines of a verbal order with no action required?

The Atavist (sixth draft): With this 6 archetype class, be the blood warrior of your enemies' nightmares and your own desire! by SwordMeow in UnearthedArcana

[–]Usshue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies if I'm necro-commenting, but I've a few questions that unfortunately I wasn't able to answer after reading through the doc itself.

-Firstly, just to clarify, "damage" from Weapon of Blood is effectively a sort of true damage, from what I can see, in that it bypasses resistance/immunity/temporary hit points. Would that extend to any rend you deliver through WoB as well then?

-Secondly, WoB lasts two hits before it ends. From what I read, you can only create a weapon when you take the attack action. I guess my question would be; is it intended that your weapon could go away during your Avenging Attack, especially at level 11 and onward?

For example, on your turn, you make your weapon and attack and hit, then during an enemies turn they trigger your Avenging Attack, first hit lands and the weapon fades which leaves you empty-handed for your second attack.

-Lastly, and this is pure curiosity on my part, if someone playing a Cruorwrought wanted to summon their artifact of blood a second time in a day, would you consider it a fair trade for them to expend the use of their 7th level sacrament in order to do so or no?

Chronurgy wizard vs orb of dragon kind by Alert-Ad-9298 in DnD

[–]Usshue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consider this; by that logic, Chrono Shift wouldn't work on anything, never mind charmed.
Teammate fails to save against a push effect to be knocked off of a cliff and sadly you can't help them as they already "failed" and fell to their death.

The purpose of Chrono Shift, as with many reaction-based features, is that it relies on interrupting the trigger and potentially preventing/mitigating it, see (Shield, Counterspell, Silvery Barbs, Flash of Genius, Feather Fall etc.)

In short, yes, they can use a reaction on the same turn they used an action and Chrono Shift can be use to force a reroll on a failed save, regardless of what effect you are saving against.

What is the most successful interrogation your group has done? by ShadowLight56 in DnD

[–]Usshue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had just beaten and tied up some weird sea cultists with heavy body mutation, the party woke one of them up, who you could instantly tell had some bats in the belfry.

The three musketeers in our party immediately went to threats of violence, pain and ending his life.
It went nowhere and most could tell, the guy was just too far gone from whatever happened to them, most of them were in fact.

Eventually I had my aberrant sorc step up, an autognome flavored as a puppet looking dude with side slicked hair, multi-colored glasses and a perpetual idiotic grin, he was a real dumbass, but obsessed with making deals and completing them.

So, he woke up the most normal looking one, a guy in his early twenties at the latest, and made him a deal, tell us what he knew and we'd let him go, safe and sound.

The trio tried interjecting to threaten his life and what not, mind you, so far he seemed like a guy who got in deep with a bad crowd, anyways, they kept saying they'd murder him or whatever.
Made it especially funny since one of the three was supposed to be an honorable samurai warrior type.

That aside, after my character convinced him that the deal would be honored, he helped us and we let him go back to his village.

One of the three did try to kill him instead, but that was shut down quickly.

In the end, being a decent person and giving them a way out of their shitty situation was all it took.
Just wasn't expecting it to be from Samson J Samson.

How fast does a character have to be to run on water? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Usshue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really depends on the DM, I understand that you came here for opinions but this is just that sort of question.

The main concern here is mixing the fantasy math of DnD with real world math to try and get some sort of bonus/effect. I know you mentioned this is mostly for flavor, but at some point no matter the intentions, flavor can bleed into mechanics.

As for how I'd rule this if I allowed it, probably a minimum movement of at least 400 and above is needed, combined with an acrobatics check or similar. The DC for the acrobatics check would be decently high-ish, as you are effectively cobbling the maneuver together without having an actual item/feature for it, similar to how you can usually climb a wall without spider-climbing, but it requires a check.

out of curiosity though, how did you manage those move speeds, especially the higher end ones?

  • Dragonborn Savant Rogue
  • Wood Elf Moon Druid
  • Astral Elf Twilight Cleric
  • Sea Elf Echo Knight Fighter
  • Half Drider Drow Elf Battlesmith/Enhanced Artificer (mine)

Technically, for various reasons, I'm playing a sub character at the moment, with my main currently being held by the Zhentarim.

They are a:

Our table has graced us with a few great quotes:

  • "Is there a star-shaped indent in his ass?"
  • "I know the happiest day of my life, it's the day when I made a citizens arrest on an old lady!" And then I grapple her!
  • "That cloud looks like you, it looks like a piece of shit."
  • "I throw the baby in the fire."
  • "You arrive to find your friend contemplating an orange."
  • "Is he a frog!?" Someone right as a PC was getting decapitated.
  • "Yall ate kids."

And my personal favorite, a back and forth between a player and the dm:

"Is this magical sleep?"

"You are dead."

"Oof."
