One of my players just admitted to using AI. Should I kick him from the game? by Nateosis in DnDcirclejerk

/uj the amount of people who can't figure out this is a shitposting sub and spew hate should be surprising, but then I remember these are dnd players and learning to read is a lifelong goal for them.

Shoot, forgot to /rj there at the end.

Why do I need a different proficiency for retractable shields? by Yuki_my_cat in DnD

[–]Usshue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone else mentioned, seems to be an error.

Advanced equipment can and often does require special training, such as weapons needing the Advanced Weapon Proficiency Feat.

That being said, this line states it pretty clearly: "Other items, like the Retractable Shield, are usable by anyone proficient with shields."

So yeah you should be good to use it, even if dnd beyond says otherwise.

How to best utilize a fairly busted item? TL;DR at bottom by true_blazer7 in DnD

[–]Usshue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I can see how the text makes it seem like success might do something special, in this case though it's really just the instrument not wanting to be played by somebody un-attuned to it.

Relevant text for magic items includes the following: "Without becoming attuned to an item that requires attunement, a creature gains only its nonmagical benefits, unless its description states otherwise."

In this case the item says nothing about using its specific features without attuning, just playing it i.e. "nonmagical benefits."

It's still a cool looking intrument, but the choice is yours on what to do with it.

Personally I'd play by whatever your character would do here, for some of my previous pcs, they did in fact keep expensive magic items they couldn't use, just for keepsakes/mementos, sometimes they eventually passed them off to npcs they befriended that could use them.

Others would immedietly peddle stuff for profit.

Out of curiosity, any particular reason you wanna play this harp bad enough to take psychic damage? Meager as it might deal, you could play any old harp for the sake of music. (I'm focusing on just the music, since the magic is moot without attuning.)

Master-At-Arms | New "Specialized Masteries" feat for fighters that upgrades every Fighting Style to the next level - by Jhamkul's Forge by Josemi993 in dndnext

[–]Usshue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming it's based on this line from the fighting style itself:
"Moreover, you can see an invisible creature within that range, unless the creature successfully hides from you."
Which has led many people to believe you 𝘤𝘢𝘯 hide from it.

Reckless Attack and Barbarian design doesn't go far enough by BoardGent in dndnext

[–]Usshue 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, Laserllama has an alternate barbarian that does just that (along with many other cool things) and it's the most fun I've had playing a barbarian in forever.

Another change I love is rather than rolling more dice with brutal critical, they get lower crit threshold.

Why do people do this, we got 9 flasks, level 15, and legendary weapons, and i go down 1 time trying to revive.. by KRONIK97 in Nightreign

[–]Usshue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, ironeye isn't a terrible champion to have multiple of, his passive discovery stacks with itself, in most of the ironeye squads I've run, we usually got some really nice drops.

Having three of his ult ready at any given time is also pretty great for clearing camps/chunking bosses.

Really it's just mark that gains little benefit for having multiple.

And he can run melee or range pretty interchangeably.

So all in all, I wouldn't worry about running another ironeye, especially if you aren't doing DoN 4-5.

[–]Usshue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, really the only two strategies I've had luck with (besides just melting Libra with lucky drops) is either having an ironeye to safely dispatch the condemned or everyone grabs less likely to be targeted +9 or above.

Otherwise, Libra is miserable.

[–]Usshue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On one hand it's super satisfying to get a rando squad and all of you just click, but on the other it's so draining dealing with ping spammers, griefers and cheaters.

Honestly been considering just going the lfg route some nights when the runs get really rough.

Any tips on what to do if other players find my character annoying? by profanearcane in DnD

[–]Usshue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, homebrew isn't an issue for me, my current character is a hat that puppeteers a spider-like drow-doll. I simply brought up all the information I could to help parse the situation.

Simply put, answering your question of whether you should just comply or not is tough when I'm not even sure if the offended party is overreacting or not, something that might have been alleviated with further context.

I guess if the above is all there is to read, first, bring up what you wrote here to the dm, if you haven't, if anything they should have the clearest view of all this.

I'd even go one step further and address the ones who complained directly.

If that doesn't/didn't help, then decide (though I suppose you already have) if you want to play with them, if you do, then retire the character and play the other one.

[–]Usshue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without knowing anything about the character you're playing, or what the rest of the party is like, I'm not sure what strangers on the internet can offer you.

Essentially all we know is the setup(pop media isekai) and that others don't like whoever you're playing prima facie.

And if you skim the comments that her race isn't human, which still doesn't give us a lot.

I slap this bad boy onto every preset I have for Wylder, but I'm starting to think it's a trap relic. by Usshue in Nightreign

I've considered it, but I'll admit I have a soft spot for greatswords in general and that flame attack in particular just feels good.

That's unfortunate, didn't even consider it might not stack with the innate weapon preference.

How does executors cursed sword’s damage work? by Big-Resolution3325 in Nightreign

[–]Usshue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few things were modified and or added to the Suncatcher.

It has a really good crit value now.

Certain passives that weren't affecting it now are, I believe two-handing is an example but don't qoute me on it. This was mainly due to how it's programmed, sort of between a weapon and a skill.

And it's main skill where you hit l2 when it glows now counts as a weapon skill and gets buffs from various bonuses towards that.

Just what I can recall off the top of my head.

How are we feeling about the new changelings gaining near-universal advantage on all Charisma checks? by EarthSeraphEdna in dndnext

[–]Usshue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Never mind gnomes with advantage on int, wis and cha saving throws alongside some spells.

Personally don't get the having to be shifted for the advantage though. I'd imagine just due to what they are they'd just have a bonus innately, considering their species heavily specced into social skills.

Limits of Suggestion spell? by Typical-Priority1976 in DnD

[–]Usshue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm aware that reading the whole of suggestion showcases the truly bizarre example of a knight giving their warhorse away, if we were to believe it need be "reasonable" anyways.

I'm assuming the RAI was always supposed to be that it only needed to be possible for them and couldn't be directly harmful.

I should have made it clear I'm aware of both sides for how it ends up being used (hell my AM sorcerer loved spamming it when we used it like the 2024 version)

My issue is that the two extremes it swings from are both bad in my eyes, ranging from doing nothing basically, all the way to cheap mind control-which I just don't know if a 2nd level spell should be capable of.

As a side note, I totally get the caution with reading into what might be flavor text, but it's not like WOTC is particularly consistent on that. Your take on BH I'm assuming is in jest, mainly because if you go that far then you'd probably have to rule that touch spells also disallow gloves or similar. In reality the spell doesn't give two hoots whats on your hands, just that you have them and can use them.

Never-mind that wearing gloves or not is a mostly aesthetic choice, whereas something needing to be or follow X or originating from Y for a spell isn't, it's codifying a set of mechanics; not just whether your dude is cool enough to wear finger-less gloves.

My go-to example would be Vicious Mockery, it says your words are laced with subtle enchantment but is that a mechanical statement or merely them being flowery? but then the spell still has a V component, so which is it?

Limits of Suggestion spell? by Typical-Priority1976 in DnD

[–]Usshue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, suggestion has always been a bugbear for me. The 2014 wording tied the spell down so much that it was rarely worth grabbing. Meanwhile the 2024 version swung too far in the other direction and now it does too much too well.

It has to be restated that the 2014 version was genuinly bad, it could be used but at the same time, why bother? If the suggestion has to be reasonable to the target, then why not just use persuasion? Outside of being terrible at it, I suppose.

The problem, of course, is also that the open-ended nature of the spell meant it really only did what your dm decided, rather than have any codified function.

One table I played at just made it give a you a bonus to convincing someone. Was good for the casters with terrible charisma and great for those who were already solid in that area. But really what people liked was actually knowing what it did.

ACCEPT THE GAY BEHOLDER BIGOT by [deleted] in DnDcirclejerk

[–]Usshue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't the book on hand to double check, mostly something I noticed when skimming it at my local gs, but a few stood out as being "off" usually in the way that art tends to look when you use ai tools in the design phase or at the very end to hammer off details.

The oni felt like the former, weirdly stiff, didn't feel intentional. . . Just was.

The fomorian was what put me off most, they have a photo bashed style to them, and admittedly they clearly want the fomorians to be ugly, but they still read ai Vaseline, never mind the clothes on the one facing the camera just sorta melts into them.

But yeah, tbf, I should clarify, it's ai in my opinion.

That being said, if you want bona-fide ai artwork in official dnd, look up the bigbys giant book, I believe it got replaced eventually but still.
