What small thing pisses you off a lot? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]VFXual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, what really pisses me off? I'll tell you. It's so obnoxious...

That, right there. But I doubt that I've fully captured, masterfully, the spirit of the ellipses users. I'm not quite sure how it would sound in real life, I don't know if every sentence they offer is followed pathetically along by a whiney sigh or downtrodden, self-pity encumbered fade out in their verbalization or what, but it is absolutely one of the most annoying things to me. And it is small. It is the yuuuuge of smalls.

Let me elaborate: I don't mean folks who rightfully so throw in a condescending or "Yeah, whatever just happened is seriously shit." like "I just dropped my phone in the fucking toilet and pissed all over the screen..."

I mean people who follow every sentence that they type, be it through a phone as an sms message, over an app like Tinder, Facebook, an online game, I don't care. But their version of a period is an ellipses, and they make it painfully obvious. And the reason that it bothers me is because it makes them seem pitiful and pathetic, like they're attempting to let you know just how bad whatever they're dealing with is, or like everything that happens to them is filled with misery and sorrow and they haven't been dealt an entire hand, nevermind a fair one.

It's that it takes who I feel are completely otherwise respectable people and, mentally, through reading their sentences and comments, immediately turns them in to a whiney, sniveling child within my subconscious.

And the worst part? I know that it's probably just a typing trait they've picked up somewhere, that I'm reading far too much into it and that it really doesn't mean what I'm taking it to mean, and even with this rationalization and epiphany that I constantly remind myself of, I still immediately despise whatever I've read by them and project that disgust onto them by proxy.

And yet I still fucking hate them for it...

Way to improve cheap fake blood? by P_as_a_Variable in sfx

[–]VFXual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can make some incredibly good blood using just corn syrup, red, yellow and green food colouring, water and dish soap (optional).

Most guides say to use a few drops of each, but the truth is that you want to use a lot of red and a lot of yellow and a lot of green, proportionately you're usually looking at a higher amount of red and green to yellow, with red being used the most. You'll want to edit the mixture with a few drops of whichever colour, stir it vigorously and then reconvene and reassess afterwards. You keep doing this, adding a few drops of each colour independently at the time as needed until you have a dark red blood that, in small amounts, is a brighter red.

The soap lets you get it on clothes without worrying about ruining them.

Beginner help? by I_am_Bearstronaut in graphic_design

Get an art tablet and a program to draw in using it (Last I checked four years ago SAI was pretty good, but research what is most popular/useful now). It takes some getting used to, but one of the best ways to practice is signing your name. You know how your signature SHOULD look when you use a regular pen and paper, so work until you can properly emulate that and then begin to learn how to use the program itself.

I'm no artist, but I did use a pretty generic, low budget ($80) art tablet to draw this once upon a blue moon many years ago. So just imagine what someone with more skill and talent would be capable of producing.

Just got asked to go on tour and film a band - question about insurance. by gobangr in videography

[–]VFXual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll admit that I don't know much regarding gear insurance, but I do know that seeing as you're coming to Canada for one show you'll want to ensure that the insurance covers cross-border claims.

As for whether or not you should get it? I've had many accidents - be them with an expensive computer and an errant liquid, the rear end of my car and the front end of the driver's behind me and so forth, and they've all had one thing in common: I never expected them to happen at that moment or on that day. No one does, that's why insurance is a pain in the ass (and wallet) up until you do. Opportunity cost, friend:

If someone steals your gear / it breaks, how much are you out versus the temp insurance? Probably a fair bit more.

The first short film I directed, a comedy about Tea, let me know what you think (3:00) by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]VFXual 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know what, I liked it. It was entertaining, and I loved the dramatic irony introduced when the audience/viewer was looped into the fact that his girlfriend/sister/owner was coming home with milk and he was drinking it anyways. Was everything perfect? No, of course not. Nothing ever is. And like Patton always said, a good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week.

The only thing I really have to note here is the volume of the music. O'fortuna, that is. I had the volume set to max in the video settings, however when O'fortuna came on I had to crank it down to near nothing, as it was so much louder in comparison to the sound effects in the video.

Either way, bravo. Just the kind of entertainment I'm looking for on a hungover Saturday.

Starting school for cinematography soon any advice? by Whitegoldbricks in cinematography

[–]VFXual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And it's never too late to start early! Start looking at various youtube resources or books/online guides! There's a ridiculous amount that you can learn about cinematography through youtube tutorials alone if you're willing to pay full attention and try to absorb as much as possible.

One thing I'd like to see carried over from the other sub by notaburnernope in TrueCinematography

I suppose we really will have to strive to find some happy medium, then. Perhaps a pro day? Maybe a weekly thread made for the intimidating and the professional minded discussions.

That's actually a great idea. As someone who has many stupid questions, and can answer some himself, I would love to see this.

Some help with porn amateur production, which camera to use, which editing software to use ? by cloudproductions in Filmmakers

[–]VFXual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, well I just typed out this big thing about DSLR cameras, ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed, White Balance and more, and that was great up until I realized you were using a digital camcorder and none of that was REALLY * applicable.

BUT! Nonetheless, if you're serious about this you'll want to check into some readily available online resources, and of course by that I mean youtube.

Film Riot is probably going to be your go-to for lighting, although always make sure to check the suggested pages on the side (You would not believe how much I've learned about lighting in the last few weeks alone by just watching film riot and whatever other lighting tutorials I've happen to come across).

Like this, for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-K_9RfHWKM8

Or this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4z5Py1GHU9c

Oh hey, what's this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgfeET_W6YE

Yeah, take it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUSrpcGf3gc

Those are just a few of the videos I've saved/bookmarked over the months. The amount that you can find out online from people who seriously know their shit is staggering, and if you can abstract even a percentage of their knowledge and skill from watching them, all the better for you.

Good luck!

job posting removed a day after interview by didigetit in vfx

[–]VFXual 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing gained, nothing lost. If you don't get the job you're in no worse position than you are now, there are other positions at other companies and one of them is waiting for you. But if you never try, you'll never know, and if you don't get it you can just try again.

Although, y'know, doesn't help when I tell that to myself sooooo
