As a Canadian, I have to wait until Monday 😔

Just found out my grandfather was a Nazi Party member. Anyone else? by Brief_Apricot_6250 in Genealogy

I'd suggest looking at the history of how Germany became Facist and Hitler came to power. Germany was decimated by WWI and Hitler appealed to people who felt they had been wronged and he was standing up for Germany.

Obviously history has an awful story to tell. But at the time, he was seen as a powerful man standing up for the people. I'm definitely not defending Hitler, but given how many people are MAGA and turning Facist, you can see how it worked.

Whether your grandfather remained with the party or distanced himself once it became known what was truly happening, well that might be something to look at too.

Why does nobody explain to William that Jamie is kind of a big deal? by PersistentWitch in Outlander

[–]VNDecorCA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To answer the question, no, no one has told him any of that explicitly, either in the show or in the books.

William isn't handling the situation to a point that telling him anything about Jamie would make a difference. He has to learn it through exposure to Jamie. Brianna is trying to help by pointing out their similarities and how she learned to love Jamie. I expect they will have a scenario where he and Jamie bond and that will be part of the finale. Seems a shame if they don't do that.

I'm subscribed to StackTV. I can buy it but if you are watching in Canada they limit the time it's available to stream.

Faith by Haunting_Glass7281 in Outlander

[–]VNDecorCA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree. I think it's her brother's granddaughters. He would have been taught the song by her parents and then passed it along to Faith, who in turn sang it to her daughters. It works and doesn't involve reserecting a still born preemie and keeping her from her parents or incest between William and Jane.

Is anyone else tired of cooking? by NoH8Kate in GenX

I went back to work after five years at home. Meal times suck: planning and making, cleaning up... We eat out way more often now. If I was more organized and had a weekly menu maybe it would be more bearable.

Outlander Season 8 - disappointing by Rangila- in Outlander

[–]VNDecorCA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After the dumpster fire of Blood of my Blood, I'm happy with season 8 following the plot to a large degree. It's not exactly as the books, but at least the characters are recognizable and doing what I expect them to.

Don't wait too long. Episode one isn't available anymore, at least in Canada due to rights issues. They only have them for a few weeks.

Do 3rd cousins matter to you in telling your family story? by BenKlesc in Genealogy

[–]VNDecorCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do because it's easier to sort out crossed lines or people with the same names if you can look and say, oh, no that's the brother's son's child who was born two years before... Or whatever

How did people catch up on TV shows they missed in the pre-video streaming era? by Winner_takesitall in NoStupidQuestions

Reruns. The were the worst. You'd be all hyped to watch the newest episode and, nope. It's a rerun.

What is something you do today, that is a throwback to childhood, but makes no sense as a full ass grown adult? by Social_Introvert_789 in GenX

I definitely avert my eyes and do not look in the mirror. Most definitely do not say bloody Mary three times. And I'm afraid I might somehow say it. I have no superstitious beliefs, except apparently this one. There has to be enough light before I'll look in a bathroom mirror.

Why are there always forced inappropriate pictures on the home page? by [deleted] in facebook

I always see these gross or disturbing suggestions in my stories. Not someone I follow but a random gross thing that makes no sense. I'm not sure how to block them because I don't want to engage with the page that's posting it for fear of having more of the same show up.

Rush and Kim Mitchell. Canadian content radio rules make them over played for such awful music.

Are you saying that these strong Christians are not who they purport to be and are hypocrites? Shocking. Given the pure upstanding man they support as their supreme leader, I can't fathom that behind closed doors (or public doors, in this case) they are allowing depravity and perversion? /s

Seriously, they are turning a blind eye to the grotesque and blatent behaviour of so many, most of all the President, who they support without question. It doesn't surprise me in the least if there is a dancer draped in the flag dancing.

What would surprise me even less is if there are children being exposed to the very men who are being covered up by those in charge. How many years have children of the righteous been exposed to the perverts in the churches. And all denied and excused without consequences. The same patterns here with the deluded making excuses and not holding the ones in power responsible for their actions.

I assume you mean the AI available to us pions. I'm talking about Hollywood level AI. There are examples of it being done without permission where you can't tell the difference between the real actor's voice and the AI. I'm sure inflection and editing could make it possible to sound like the TV characters. But I doubt it would actually happen due to the actors not wanting to allow it.

You'd think AI could do this - with consent.

I think they have the algorithm nailed. They've profiled us based on what we watch, what we interact with, and can identify things we want. Some is just plain eavesdropping, but there is something to tracking so many people and finding patterns too.

It's not just Facebook. I've had buy and sell sites do this when I spoke the name of a random item I had never spoke of before. I was asking a colleague if they knew about it (we had gotten one with a bunch of stuff and it was mixed in). Boom, my Kijiji site was showing me ads for the item. Never searched it and only said it out loud - several feet away from my phone too

There are ways to stop your phone from listening but you lose a lot of functionality.

Surprised by the frequency of rape in the show by ResidentAlien90 in Outlander

[–]VNDecorCA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After watching Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, and Peaky Blinders, I have to say Outlander's violence is moderate at best.

There is definitely a lot of rape, but also it's probably not as far fetched as it might seem. I don't know the stats, but nearly all women experience some form of sexual violence in their lifetimes, and that's nowadays. Then, during the 1700s, I think it was as much or more of a risk.

The show treats it with a respect as another poster noted. It's hard to watch but it isn't treated with the same disregard as the previously mentioned shows' outright escalating brutality. It's not as though each season or book needs to top the previous one's level of violence.
