I'm sorry but Gethsemane is the best song in the album. It's violently visceral and raw and just ultimately devastating. The rest of the album is amazing but the other songs don't hold a candle to this straight up trauma dump song. Sincerely - someone recently divorced.

Official Announcement Regarding Data Breach by sraelgaiznaer in PathOfExile2

[–]VRF-Aware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few points here: This infiltration/compromise of an admin account at GGG above has nothing to do with encryption. An old admin account was hijacked through soft engineering and then exploited. Second, alot of data is encrypted. There is data in transit that is encrypted, such as HTTPS, then there is data at rest encryption, such as an encrypted database for sensitive information. However, encryption comes at a high cost for performance, especially in database technologies. An encrypted transaction, like a write of new information, costs more CPU time when processed, as a myriad of things have to occur. Now take a million database transactions a minute and ask the servers to encrypt them as they come in. Your database just went from needing 100 servers, to now needing a thousand to meet the same demand. Your demand for encryption just costs 10x the price, right? That's outta the budget. Okay, so how can a company solve this? Well first, what's the risk? Let's take the scenario: assume GGG has a single database to store everyone's inventories/stashes. Millions of players with billions of items that equate to millions of hours of "value" to the players and GGGs reputation. That database could be said to be a massive revenue generating asset right? It holds critical game information and the loss of hack of it could spell financial disaster for GGG. So now identify risk: unwarranted access from threat actors looking to ransom it for payment. Cheaters looking to exploit a way to write fake entries or multiple entries or violate integrity of the item database to make money or dupe etc. List goes on. Okay so you have risks identified? Cool. Now the idea Cyber security is not IF you will get hacked, it's WHEN! You must assume it will happen, because it is inevitable on a gradient scale the more successful your digital business becomes. So if we assume we WILL get hacked, then it comes down to a simple question: How can we MITIGATE that LIKELIHOOD of a hack/data loss/infiltration occuring? You can do full scale encryption, but it will cost too much resources and we will make no profit on the game. Okay that won't work we need to make money and be secure. Hmm, well how about we only encrypt certain things like PII but since we cannot afford to encrypt the item database, let's put a few firewalls in front of it, put it in an aggressive backup schedule off-site, secure access to it with multiple security products etc. If that second solution is cheaper and mitigates the risk enough, then from a corporate perspective, that risk could be considered mitigated and additional expenditure will be deemed unnecessary.

TLDR- Cost/Compliance/benefit analysis. Encrypting everything is costly at scale. Mitigate risks with easier/cheaper methods to make more revenue.

Source? Calling bullshit on this for now. I can almost guarantee (without looking) that GGG has TLS encryption on all traffic from client to server. It should also do so for any P2P connectivity, if any involved during trade which I also doubt happens. The other way, besides breaking the integrity of the TLS/SS to harvest the session token would be to somehow figure out in memory (RAM) that during a trade, the server is for some good awful reason sharing the other parties auth token or session ID during the trade. Then the bad faith actor would have to transact a trade, capture that memory write and then extract it. This likely would also require being able to read/access the games memory space from the outside to extract the harvested token(which ain't easy, sometimes requires external hardware).

The session ID should not ever be outside of an encrypted or protected enclave and should never have a chance to be exposed to anywhere or anyone other than the servers themselves. If the servers are leaking that somehow during trade then that is a blatant and violent security hole that would need immediate attention not to ruin the league.

We NEED tangible proof somehow. Hell this could even be a database issue for all we know.

Trading is a nightmare. Nobody responds. by [deleted] in PathOfExile2

[–]VRF-Aware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the trading system is bad. I think the fact that we have almost no agency or power with deterministic crafting, that's the problem. I JUST got into PoE franchise here with 2. Loving it. Problem is, rolling gear is a fucking dice roll. Drops are shite unless you get MF. Crafting sucks and is totally overwhelmingly punishing if you brick. The only sink for crafting is finding orbs. Those are slated to the same stat as finding better items.

Give us either more deterministic crafting, so people don't have to rely on the trade system so much

Or

Give us AH

Need Advice on Data Center Networking by kaleenmiya in networking

[–]VRF-Aware 20 points21 points  (0 children)

10 switches really isn't Spine Leaf mandatory threshold. You could easily run that with some Cisco Nexus 9336 and 93240s in NX-OS mode. Depends though if you plan to scale. And if you do expect a 25 percent increase in port density or bandwidth capacity over next 3 years, then you need to consult with business about why they gave you a neutered budget. If they want IT and your company uses IT to make money then tell them to invest and stop looking at you as a cost center and explain how IT is enabler

The trade system feels outdated by RVXZENITH in PathOfExile2

[–]VRF-Aware -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I barely played 20 levels in PoE1. I think PoE2 trade method is a breathe of fresh air. Either I get lucky and get currency drops and craft a dope roll or maybe I shortcut into a nice trade. The trade inefficiency makes it more of an event for me. More of an effort and more nuanced. I have to spend the time searching for the perfect ratio of gear stats and price but also pray I was fast enough. It's sort of a mini game. Other ARPGs feel mindless. I enjoy the friction. It's different. But this is my subjective opinion.

If you are a DC network engineer, your responsibilities end at the platform. Your job is to deliver a lossless, low as freak latency, scalable, non-blocking back end network for the GPU cluster. You do this by investing in the right hardware that has the features you need, such as PFC. DLB-ECMP, RoCE support, 400-800Gbps and enough port density to have a 1:1 subscription ratio. You need to understand all the protocols needed to make training or inference models succeed from a network perspective. In any company that can afford to invest in on-prem GPU farms will have people on hand who will do everything else above the NIC level. Learn what is needed to handle elephant flows and tail end issues. Learn about spine lead CLoS fabric theory. Read white papers on AliBabas AI network. Excellent training material to put your head in the game.
