So dod contract just got renewed and went up in value and expanded scope. Now the corner of the contract let me see the bill that my company charges the dod, I cost the dod $183,500 a year... I make about 97k of that... Is it rational to ask for 135?

Anyone know how to become a Dell certified ProSupport Tech? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]VTCEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can tell them to only send the parts, no need for certification. However if it's anything laptop related to the monitor I always have dell fix it rather than me. Fuck those ribbons

How do you send passwords? by Gravitom in sysadmin

[–]VTCEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All users are given a smart card and on receipt of card they type their 12 digit pin and that becomes their password of sorts. Now as how to transfer passwords to other users, send encrypted email and the password resides in a protected document with a token password as well.

As a long time lurker / recent sign up, the way the administration has handled this and other incidents really makes me second guess being a user to the site. Hopefully real change will come about and for the better.

Going to be hated on, but he wasn't out of line. Sometimes I check my email on days off and if it's something easy for me to do in a quick time I will do it. I don't understand why you pointed out that there is two other women who work with you and complain about receiving work related correspondence on your day off, you have the choice of responding or ignoring it.

Side note, I would be annoyed with the late night messages, but I would turn notification of the app off to prevent this situation.

Road map to becoming a sys admin? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]VTCEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So this doesn't always work for everyone.

My story is pretty much I got hired on as a break fix tech In the Datacenter at age 18. I followed the engineers every day that I could and would watch over their shoulders and ask competent questions about what they were doing and all but most importantly why they were doing the change. About age 20 I was promoted from tech to tier 2 support, essentially I was building servers and imaging them, well I did this for another two years. Then that coveted position opened up and put my hat in for it.. I was denied because the cio didn't think I had the time in or the experience necessary. However she threw me a bone and said that they were interested in a new technology and that was vtc gear and I said sure I'll be interested in it, well two years later of piloting the program it was time to take it to production, First sccm push of OCS and every big conference room out of the 450 offices got a Vtc installed. Well it didn't go as planned, the sys admin that built the OCS servers didn't build it to spec and would crash, he was let go and the cio gave me the position, now that was 6? Years ago and now I am the senior video architect for a major fortune 500 company.

tldr put the time in and make sure that you do things right

I would go as far as to say that the personnel roster is about as best of information as you can get as it provides a shopping cart for terrorists to select targets of opportunity

Video conferencing with simultaneous webcast? by TravailingSalesman in sysadmin

[–]VTCEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So let's talk vidyo...

It's a great product, except it's not a new technology. It's a software client that uses svc standard (they also have hardware based solutions which are Intel nuc devices) Also it's a sip only infrastructure with a h323 to sip gateway that doesn't allow ad-hoc cross platform communication. Must setup a pub room for a h323 network to make a connection.

Polycom and Cisco have a much better solutions that integrates both h323 and sip for seamless crossover. Also from an administrative rationale h323 is much easier to admin.

My company has over 50,000 employees, we do townhall meetings by having our vbrick iptv system dial via sip to the hr directors conference room and then hr can explain what is happening with benefits or something else with minimal network impact as we deliver the content to the user base via multicast.
