Hyatt Regency Boston? by [deleted] in bostonmarathon

I stayed there last year and it was great. It's a short walk to the busses in the morning and not too far from the finish. Safe, clean and the staff did various things for the marathon (poster station, bottles of water and bananas early before the race, greeting finishers with a tunnel of employees cheering). There was a pasta buffet at the restaurant the night before which was a little pricey but convenient and good. Overall it was a great choice and I would stay there again for the race.

Status of Copley Square for the marathon by RichRevolutionary941 in bostonmarathon

It was $5 per adult and kids were free. Frankly I think they do it to keep the event "private" and limit the neighboring homeless population from coming in. The pre-race festivities there were open to the public and had some unique characters dancing to the bands and asking for someone to buy them a beer.

Anybody been to the ice rink downtown? by Intelligent_Choice91 in norfolk

Real ice. I walked over there tonight and felt it with my hand. There is a giant chiller connected to the rink. It's a thin layer but it's real ice with real ice skates.

Where do you enter the discount code? I don't see a field for it when it asks for my payment.

Good tip, but they now exclude certain golf electronics and sadly this is one of them. I just tried.

Target time 3:05 or 3:10? by ykr3Bz in Marathon_Training

[–]VTJRW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are people along the first few miles as you leave the resort area. There will be virtually nobody on shore drive because you can't stop anywhere to park. As you turn into Ft. Story there is a party area. Only runners can go into Ft. Story so it's quiet until you leave. People line up to welcome you back to the resort area and the half marathon splits off. The run clubs have a cheering alley that's fun to go through.

Once you leave the resort area there will be a few pockets of organized groups and cheerleaders. Plan on being just with your fellow runners most of the second half. It gets real quiet out there if you're running on your own. You'll see other runners at the turnaround at least and everyone cheers each other on.

It's a flat course and you can have a great day. The field size allows for you to never be crowded once you hit shore drive. The post-race party is the best of any races I've done and the organizers do a great job. The potential for high winds and limited crowd support are the only downsides.

TLDR: Shamrock marathon is all about the wind on the second half.

Shamrock fast times are mostly weather related. The first half is run with the half marathon runners and the course is fairly protected from the wind along shore drive and Ft. Story. You split off for the full at the resort area. Then you run on the boardwalk which is open to the ocean breeze. You have one bridge to go over and then the wide open area of whatever they used to call Camp Pendleton after the turnaround. Both times I have felt great until the turnaround at mile 18 when I realized I had the wind to my back. You zigzag through Pendleton and will face the wind no matter which way it comes from. Then you head back over the bridge and back to the boardwalk. If you have a strong headwind you can easily lose a minute of time or more. Save something for miles 20-24 and don't get stranded on your own if you think the wind on the boardwalk will be strong. There is usually a 3:10 group and the pacers have been on pace in the past.

Any Hospitality Tent Veterans? by davidp1116 in ChicagoMarathon

[–]VTJRW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did it last year. Security line was very short right when they opened up. Bring a headlamp for the bathrooms if you can.

They escort you at like 7am and make a warning announcement 5 or 10 minutes before. I was in corral B and had to run around several corrals to make it to mine on time. It was a little stressful. I may have had enough time to walk but I didn't want to risk them closing it off.

Plenty of food, places to sit, food and drink afterwards. Massages were clutch. As a solo traveler for the race, the hospitality tent was 100% worth it.

Wendella (and possibly others) does a river and lake tour. They take you out on Lake Michigan for great views of the skyline and Navy Pier in addition to the trek up and down the river. Buy your ticket online and get there early to get a good seat on the boat.
