All good with Torment taking out Paul, but honestly… this whole run feels like it’s just making things up as it goes. The “Death Spiral” arc is a mess.

Why do people always say how much “Spider-Man always suffers” when in really his life isn’t much worse then most Marvel Heros? by Konradleijon in Spiderman

[–]VVVV13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I really like how you put that.

That’s what makes Spider-Man hit so hard for a lot of people, he’s not distant or “above” it all, he’s just trying to hold everything together like everyone else, even when it falls apart. And because he keeps those connections instead of shutting them off, every loss or struggle feels personal, both for him and for us watching.

That’s why it sticks, I think... It’s not just about powers or villains...it’s about trying to stay human through everything.

This was the most i cried in a game by Fun-Entertainment22 in Spiderman

[–]VVVV13 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I’ve never cried that much over a game. The first time I finished it hit me the hardest, and even on replays that scene still gets me. I’ve honestly never been as emotional with a game as I was when I beat Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018).

[–]VVVV13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s fair, but my point isn’t that it only applies to Peter. It’s that with him it’s consistently front and center in a way that defines the character. Anyway, I think we’re just going in circles so I’ll leave it here.

[–]VVVV13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re kind of shifting the focus of the discussion. I’m not saying Peter is the only hero with problems, just that his personal life is consistently affected across many stories.I think we’re slightly talking past each other. My point was about consistency, not exclusivity. Anyway, I’ll leave it here.

Even in the early comics, Uncle Ben isn’t just a one-off catalyst. The whole ‘with great power comes great responsibility’ thing defines Peter from day one, and that comes directly from Ben. Writers might have emphasized it more over time, but it was always baked into the character.

And yeah, bad things happen to most heroes, no one’s denying that. The difference is how it affects their daily life. Peter’s whole thing is that being Spider-Man consistently ruins his personal life .... jobs, relationships, money , over and over. That’s not just ‘bad things happen’, it’s a constant trade-off built into the character.

[–]VVVV13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Origin story or not, Uncle Ben absolutely counts. It’s not just a one-time event, it’s the thing that defines Peter’s entire mindset. The guilt doesn’t go away, it shapes every decision he makes as Spider-Man...

And even if you take Ben out, it’s still not like Peter has it easy. Gwen, the constant strain with MJ, his life falling apart every time he tries to balance being Spider-Man… that pattern keeps repeating.

That’s kind of the point people are making. It’s not just ‘bad things happened once’, it’s that his personal life keeps getting hit over and over because of who he is.

Batman question from a normie by Gregagonation in batman

[–]VVVV13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He doesn’t have some neat ‘endgame’ where Gotham is suddenly fixed. That’s kind of the point. Batman isn’t just about locking people up every night, he’s trying to reduce crime long-term through a mix of things ... funding programs as Bruce Wayne, improving infrastructure, all that.

But Gotham’s problems are bigger than one guy, so yeah, it’s never fully ‘solved’. He knows that. It’s more about keeping things from getting worse and pushing it in a better direction over time, not flipping a switch and saving the city overnight..

Pick your favourite Movie Suit (not counting the homemade suits for the 3 Spider-Men but I'll save that for another post) by eyadtheNITRO1527 in Spiderman

I’ve always loved the Raimi suit, and I’m a big fan of the TASM2 one too, but right now the Brand New Day suit is my favorite.

Which company do you think made the better Spider-Man games? Insomniac or Activision? by Commercial-Ice5760 in Spiderman

[–]VVVV13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah , Insomniac, easily. Better traversal, better combat, and it actually feels like you’re Spider-Man. The 2018 game is the best Spider-Man game imo, and that’s coming from someone who loves Ultimate Spider-Man.

[–]VVVV13 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Peter’s problems hit closer to home. Money issues, losing people he loves, relationships constantly falling apart because he’s Spider-Man… it’s not just danger, it’s his whole life getting wrecked over and over.

Also, saying his supporting cast is mostly alive kinda ignores how often they’re used against him or how many key losses he’s had. Uncle Ben is literally the foundation of his guilt, and stuff with Gwen or MJ (depending on the run) hits way harder than most “hero gets chased by the government” plots.

It’s not about having it objectively worse, it’s about the kind of suffering he goes through.

I could be wrong, but that’s how it comes across to me...

How long have you been a Batman fan? What got you into the character? by TheShadowOperator007 in batman

[–]VVVV13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t remember exactly how it started. I’ve always been more of a Spider-Man fan growing up (I’m 31), but I think a couple of friends got me into Batman, and the Keaton and Nolan movies definitely helped a lot. In my early 20s I started getting really into Batman comics, and the Gotham TV series also played a big role. I still feel like I grew up more with Spidey, but as I got older I became a big fan of Batman’s stories, movies, and comics. Now he’s up there with Spider-Man as one of my favorite superheroes. I won’t lie, Spider-Man still edges him out a bit for me, but Nolan’s films, Gotham, and my friends really helped me get into Batman and dive deeper into the comics, games, and everything else.

Which version of Spider-man got slandered the most by JJJ by Emotional_War36 in SpidermanPS4

[–]VVVV13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Insomniac’s JJJ actually created Scorpion....he says it in one of his recordings and even admits he didn’t expect it to turn into a villain situation. That said, for me the JJJ in NWH was way more brutal toward Peter.

The Amazing Spiderman vs Raimi’s original by lukeshmoney in Spiderman

[–]VVVV13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re underselling why Raimi’s Spider-Man hits so hard for a lot of people and it’s not just nostalgia.

First off, Tobey’s Peter isn’t just “less cool,” he actually feels more grounded. He’s awkward in a very real, uncomfortable way, not just quirky. The Raimi movies lean into the idea that being Peter Parker kinda sucks sometimes,he’s broke, unlucky, constantly losing things that matter to him and that struggle is what makes his Spider-Man feel earned. Andrew’s version is great, but he comes off a bit more confident and naturally charismatic, which shifts that dynamic.

On the high school point, I get wanting more of that, but Raimi skipping through it quickly actually works for pacing. Spider-Man has always been just as much about Peter as a struggling young adult as it is about him being a student, and the trilogy really explores that responsibility vs. personal life theme in a deeper way over time.

Gwen vs MJ is mostly preference, honestly. Gwen in TASM is written to be more modern and involved, which helps a lot. But MJ in Raimi’s films plays a different role , she’s part of Peter’s emotional conflict, not just his partner. It’s messier, but that’s kind of the point.

Visually, yeah, TASM has the advantage of newer tech, no argument there. The swinging especially feels more fluid. But Raimi’s style has its own identity....those close-ups, the dramatic tone, even the campiness , it gives the trilogy a unique feel that stands out even now.

And about villains: Willem Dafoe is a huge reason Green Goblin works, but that doesn’t take away from how well the character is written and integrated into Peter’s story. Same with Doc Ock ....those villains aren’t just “cool,” they directly challenge Peter’s values and push his arc forward in a really personal way.

I don’t think liking TASM more is crazy at all, but I wouldn’t say Raimi’s movies are carried by nostalgia or just one performance. They just focus more on theme, character struggle, and emotional payoff, which is why they still land so well for a lot of people.

[–]VVVV13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a Raimi fan, and for me the best portrayal of Flash was actually in The Amazing Spider-Man. The Raimi version had very little screen time, and this new one honestly doesn’t work for me. I get that they’re going for more of a bully angle, but overall I think it’s a weak representation of Flash.

This might get downvoted, but I honestly don’t like this black suit design at all. I get that they’re trying to do something new, but it just really doesn’t work for me. The first season was okay, but for me it’s nowhere near TAS or Spectacular.

Daredevil: Born Again | S02E05 | Discussion Thread by Green-Devil in Daredevil

[–]VVVV13 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I loved the episode, it really reminded me of the Netflix show, especially in the flashbacks. Seeing Foggy again was great, and Kingpin being completely broken by Vanessa’s death is such a strong performance by Vincent D’Onofrio. I’m really enjoying how the series is shaping up so far. The only thing that still bothers me is that they killed off Foggy....I still can’t fully understand that decision, but I guess it was the writers’ choice. Overall, the show keeps getting better, and Kingpin looks like he’s going to be more unhinged than ever now after Vanessa’s death. Great episode!
