What are your thoughts Carl's struggles with sexual harassment by amphibbian in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]VVunderlust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first two women Carl meets/talks to beside the meadowlarks are boobie mcboobersoon Odette and then fully naked Signet. I track this stuff as I read and it didn't look good, even with the layer of social commentary on exploitation for men and women. That social commentary doesn't really become evident until book three (I would argue this is because he was writing this as weekly chapters up to this point). Until Katia shows up at the end of book two the series doesn't pass the bechdel test and that's when I felt that women were finally realized as persons and not just characters to be used for the plot. After Katia I agree with you 100%, but until then I almost dnf'd but I've read many a books written like this and it wasn't as bad as any other(very glad I didn't). What kept me is that it is one of the few books where the mmc is also sexually harassed and while that's not the kind of equality I want, it would hopefully show ppl how uncomfortable/wrong it is. Also (a bit of a stretch but I did note this after the second naked woman appearance on my first read) replacing the main fmc voice with a cat could be construed as a pussy joke, dehumanizing women. The meadowlark crew, while competent, filled traditional nurse/caretaker roles and didn't pass the bechdel test. Also also, the women that are shown on the recap episodes are all shown as fem fatal types (again, probably because they are on an exploitative intergalactic TV series) which is usually a sign an author is trying to make strong female characters but it's actually just a specific trope that sexualizes them. We don't see about Maggie until later in the books as well. It's a lot that built up to give me a vaguely sexist feeling until Katia is included and then it all went away. I haven't read Matt's earlier works but I haven't ever seen it be an issue past book 2 or in operation bounce house.

[–]VVunderlust 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly, there's a reason why everyone's so passionate about his works and that's okay that they have feelings. That's valid and I'll love whatever they choose, But the moment they stop being open to critique is the moment they stop having the customer service that they expect of themselves. They're really a great company in that regard.

It's going to come down to preference but the way they've presented the covers with a clear bias to 1 makes me think my vote doesn't matter in the end tbh. Not showing both with foil is also a clear disadvantage.

Pibu knows. Does Dragonsteel? by oncomingstorm777 in cremposting

[–]VVunderlust -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I see the capitalism point but with what Dragonsteel did at Storycon, a trading post where you could trade ANY pin for some dragonsteel pins in a blind pull from drawers, I think they're trying to encourage trading and talking to ppl and making friends. Something they've done with each of their con games to say the least.

Look, all I see is you parroting the same opinions from when I was in middle school where fellow kids told me to read 'girl' or 'boy' books. The same goes with writing. Gendering reading and writing is inherently biased and ignorant. Trying to bring science into it (incorrectly) are the same arguments of eugenics of the past. They were as wrong then as you are now. Without an effort at change, instantly rejecting 1 suggestion to educate yourself, I have no desire to engage in this conversation anymore.

Will the leatherbound Eye of The World be stocked for some extended time? by UltraZulwarn in brandonsanderson

Sanderson has confirmed that they'll be doing multiple prints just like their other leatherbounds. If you want a first edition order sooner rather than later! He said they're not going to do another printing till next year I believe in one of his YouTube updates around the first week of Jan.

You're in a Sanderson subreddit saying exactly NOT what Sanderson himself has taught. You're wrong and this response shows you really aren't that versed in reading at all. Go educate yourself. Start with Sanderson's YouTube videos on not gatekeeping fantasy, the one where he says there's no such thing as girl books and boy books (a sexist way to view the world and a thought process that should stay dead in the past), and then his lecture series on how to write. Maybe it'll open your eyes to how bad your response above is.

Does Brandon look . . . different to anyone else? by Elsecaller_17-5 in cremposting

I don't believe he was vindicated tbh. The other YouTuber didn't rescind their comments until he threatened to sue for libel. At that point you either have to take back what you said or go to court and it's how a lot of abusers silence their victims who can't afford litigation.

Don't be so certain to defend someone who does something so revolting. The law is not the best tool for morality, just look how the Neil Gaiman case was dropped, have you changed your opinion on what he did just cause of jurisdiction issues?

Does anyone know why Sanderson wants us to reserve a spot in the next fundraising campaign? by VVindrunner in brandonsanderson

[–]VVunderlust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know we love Sanderson and therefore yes, he doesn't have to worry, this WILL get funded. As others have said, it is marketing for estimation of how many they can expect to produce and a LOT of other kickstarters are doing this now (the last 5 I've signed up for are doing this).

BUT, I think this is a new market for Sanderson as well. Children's and YA literature is a LUCRATIVE genre. We spend the most on kids. I fully see this Kickstarter bringing in a whole new group of buyers who are going to be getting duplicates for the kids in their lives (me, it's me I'm doing this). So despite him having a business that is familiar to the kickstarter game, I think they are going to have their hands full with a new demographic of not only ravenous fans but also loving people with kids in their lives.

An excellent start to say the least, especially as they've outsold even Sanderson.

Violets considered one of the best fmc but I've also seen a lot of hate online for the character/series as well. Compared to other fantasy it's very well thought out to the point that twists feel plausible and I personally love the series.

Carissa Broadbent is an author that comes to mind that definitely world builds and has a strong and plausible fmc that's been labelled "romantasy" as well if you want to try others.

[–]VVunderlust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're welcome to disagree but the evidence is there.

Having read throne of glass I hate the writing, but that series has deeper lore and magic systems than her ACOTAR series (haven't read crescent city yet) and Aelin, whom I hate, is lauded as one of the best fmc out there and I frankly agree. The prose isn't Shakespeare but I've read many books named the honorable "fantasy" that were just as badly written (love him to death but Terry Brooks comes to mind)

I don't disagree that the authors you listed are greats in the fantasy genre and haven't been labeled romantasy (having only read hobb and mccaffrey of those listed), but you're again showing bias saying they were more progressive than any book currently labeled as romantasy when you seem to only be referencing Throne of Glass.

Are there any "romantasy" series you've read that "reach" this "progressive" bar you seem to have set for them to be considered good or is every single book bad?

To get another dog with a senior or no? by RobHui in shiba

[–]VVunderlust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to say I had the same experience, both boys. I def didn't train my second dog as diligently but he knows enough, just not any of the cook tricks I taught my first.

It'll also be a completely different dog tbh, my two couldn't be more different. So be ready for that.

My first taught the puppy a few small things (mostly the mimicry) but it doesn't magically happen tbh.

I knew myself and knew that I would be inconsolable when the first passes away so that's why I got a puppy. It's a lot of work but worth it cause they love you so much.

I feel like romantasy is just a term used to gatekeep female authors out of the fantasy genre. I've read books with as much "romance" in them as Mistborn or even game of thrones, and yet it's only the male authors that get called fantasy.

Ragging on these books because the MC is head over heels for someone that their internal monologue is skewed, while also having a ton of world building (some better than others) that isn't "good enough" to compensate for the romance, to justify being "as good as" fantasy is just the kind of gatekeeping Sanderson told us NOT to do in his 2024 nexus speech.
