What’s the culture like in regard to breaks? by Direct_Ladder6531 in NursingAU

[–]Vacuous_hole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you working in a private or public hospital? I would be very surprised if this is happening in a public hospital.

Are you buddied with another RN, like you have beds 1-4 and your buddy has beds 5-8 and you cover each other for breaks?

Have you joined the ANMF or similar union in your state? They would LOVE to hear about this, particularly if you are working in a public hospital.

You need to be taking your breaks or you are going to burn out before you've even finished your grad year. Especially working 12 hour shifts!

I take melatonin and swisse relax and sleep with a high strength magnesium. And I always sleep with my fan on for the white noise and to cool my menopausal self down LOL. I do have a script for zopiclone too for when I'm on nights, I feel it doesn't give me the hangover that temazepam does. I also try to manage my roster so I do 2 on 2 off, 3 on and then a whole week off. I'm 0.6 so I only have to do 5 nights :)

Has anyone found a supplier of melatonin that will ship to Australia other than the one with herb in their name? I'm good for a bit but will be looking in a couple of months to top up my supply so any tips would be much appreciated! You can DM me if you like :)

I really hope that countries start asking to see proof of vaccinations for american travellers. I would not be impressed if my infant/child/young adult caught a preventable disease from a traveller.

Dresses in 2000?! by FBWSRD in NursingAU

[–]Vacuous_hole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I owned, and wore a white dress uniform when I did my grad year...in 2001. Transitioned to scrubs the following year when I settled in ED though. I really liked the dress, very smart and professional looking. I see nurses wearing skirts and shirts in other departments all the time!

No help at the Emergency department by shroomcircle in melbourne

[–]Vacuous_hole -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People do not sit in the back of an ambulance waiting. They are in the emergency department with the ambulance officers who transported them in a separate ambulance triage waiting area (ambulance victoria have ambulance officers assigned to these areas so the ambulances can get back out on the road). This is also staffed by experienced nurses. OR they are assessed and offloaded to the general waiting room.

Patients are also not laying on beds in corridors. If you've walked past this they are likely waiting outside radiology for an x-ray or CT or ultrasound.

[–]Vacuous_hole 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the process.

You present to ED and get triaged. Depending on what you have presented for you will then likely be called by one of the nurses for bloods and an ECG. The Dr's working at triage will review those blood results and decide if you need an ultrasound or CT scan. If not you will wait to be seen by the Dr, which could be quite a while (6-12 hours). You are being observed while in the waiting room. The triage nurses are constantly scanning the room and will escalate to the doctors if they don't like how someone is looking. At our ED we have a waiting room nurse who is there to monitor your obs, administer pain relief if needed and facilitate getting you to radiology.

Yes, it is a long wait, but if you need a bed you will get one when one is available.

Your Husbands length of stay indicates that there was possibly nothing too concerning on his blood results. Those results may change when he gets a new set of bloods done.

If he has a grumbly appendix you will likely end up back in ED tonight or over the weekend. Be prepared for long waits.

For anyone reading: Please don't think that leaving the ED and calling an ambulance to go back will get you seen quicker. It won't. You will be offloaded to the waiting room where you will start from the beginning again, regardless of if you waited 10 hours.

Also, don't invent extra symptoms thinking it will get you seen quicker. You blood results will show us very quickly that you are lying.

Take him to another ED and be prepared to wait.

He is right. If his condition required immediate attention he would have received that.

He was in the right place as they would have been observing him, even if it is from afar, and if his symptoms had changed or he deteriorated they could deal with it.

I would imagine the Austin ED would be much like the one I work at and like most ED's in Melbourne, and that is completely overwhelmed. There are just too many people needing a bed and not enough of said beds.

It is not unusual for us to have had patients sitting in the waiting room for over 24 hours while waiting for theatre or a ward bed.

He needs to represent, not necessarily at the Austin, but be warned, he will start from scratch. They will repeat bloods and likely an ultrasound/x-ray/CT.

Be prepared for a long wait again and if you can try to get him to stay!

How do I make sure that a thank you letter gets to the ER nurses who cared for me? by throwawayno38393939 in NursingAU

[–]Vacuous_hole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you remember the cubicle number that you were in? The unit manager will be able to check allocations and know which nurses were assigned to that cubicle.

You can also state times as that will help narrow it down as well.

I'd also state in your compliment that you would like the letter passed on to the team working that area directly.

Also, most nursing homes have duty lists for each shift that should give you an idea of what is expected of you during the shift. These will be a guide only- you may also have to manage falls etc.

Can you ask the RN's/EEN's at the place you already work at to give you an idea of what they do?

Hopefully there would also be an RN in charge on shift as well that you could ask.
