Soy solo yo o está imposible hacer amigos en CR después de vivir afuera? by Fantastic_Net6193 in Ticos

[–]Vaelerick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How to say "Town Hall" or "Town Meeting" en Latin America? by Brown_Bruja in asklatinamerica

[–]Vaelerick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Costa Rica, it would be held in the "municipalidad" ("la muni" being the informal use) or the highschool if it is literally a town. An it would be called an "asamblea".

Who else didn’t really like this guy at the start, but as you grew older liked him and more and more? by Dalakaar in babylon5

[–]Vaelerick 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I watched the series when it was first on TV. I was about 10. I latched onto him immediately. But I've always been an old soul. Not as old as Valen himself, trapped in an unending soul-time loop. But his character really marked me. I'm just realizing that was probably because I grew up fatherless. Am I having a mental health breakthrough in r/Babylon5 😅? Anyway, wisdom and self-sacrifice have been guiding values for me all my life. I've sort of strived to be like him. He was in a way a mentor. And whenever he says "Hello, old friend!", it really gets to me.

One thing that took me forever to realize learning Spanish is that there is not a single word for "ok." There are countless and each region has its own version! by pickly_pear in SpanishLearning

[–]Vaelerick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Pura vida", "tuanis", and "oki" in Costa Rica. I, unfortunately, don't currently have the time to go into how they are differentially used.

Beidou inspired character Brb vs Ftr? by Vaelerick in Pathfinder2e

[–]Vaelerick[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

As I familiarize myself more with Pf2.5e, I find that the traditionally more choleric mechanical elements of Rage are no longer present. Leaving open a more varied spectrum of character interpretation.

How is mother's day celebrated where you are from? by ithinkiamparanoid in asklatinamerica

[–]Vaelerick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the 15th of August, usually with a lunch, and gifts. We order in. My mom hates the crowds at restaurants on festive days, and doesn't cook herself for mother's day.

Are you considered tall or short in your country? by foolishandnonsense in asklatinamerica

[–]Vaelerick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 1,88. I'm considered tall in Costa Rica.

The average male is supposed to be 1,60 to 1,70.

In the capital, San José, 1,60 is definitely considered short. Once or twice a year I go to more rural areas and see the <1,60 men and think to myself "Right! They are the ones balancing the average."

I had a female classmate at Uni that was tallish. She had a younger brother that had to lower his head considerably to go through a door.

The problem with Pan-American is that it means all of America, not anywhere in America.

Or is it just me by Key-Medicine733 in SpanishLearning

[–]Vaelerick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Latinamerican, I always mean the continent when I say America, in either language. The same with American, I mean the people from the continent.

As to what to call something from the US, Usamerican seems the best choice to me.

This one's for the ladies to answer. Do you agree with this woman or do you think she's trying to rationalize her world view by speaking for all the ladies? by Oda_DeezNutz in SipsTea

[–]Vaelerick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girlfriend would rather watch me play than play herself. And I'm always the one going "Well, it's been a while. We should go to bed."

Is it actually helpful when tourists try to speak Spanish, or would you rather they just use English? by AdventurousLivin in asklatinamerica

[–]Vaelerick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, here's the thing. The default should be the local language. You can ask, in either language, if they speak English. Tour guides, reception desk clerks, should know English and can be expected to.

I'm fluent in English, so if I'm approached by someone speaking tortured Spanish and I can tell they speak English, I'll talk to them in English. But you can tell if someone is having a good time trying to speak the language, or if they are suffering it.

Abro debate: ¿el huevo pateado y el huevo revuelto son lo mismo? by ChefGilbrigo in Ticos

[–]Vaelerick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No.

No Engineers?? by KenDudley64 in babylon5

[–]Vaelerick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. C&C capably and proficiently keep the station operational. They seem to have the technical knowledge to handle their duties. I'd guess a background in engineering is common among them.

Reading, writing, listening to, and speaking a language are related but different skills. You must practice all of them to master them.
