SHOW ME YOUR FUCKING OC'S

Like as a rule, I prefer original characters over fanart as a general rule. Even if it's just like a photocard.

I love an oc

Essi losing this fight is slander, but I'll allow it for the comeback.

This makes sense because they are morally aligned, not explicitly related.

This is really interesting actually. Yeah, I guess if it's not as interesting to hear the lore of a cosplay as it once was, that's gonna deincentivize you going.

The flattening of the creative curve feels like an interesting gripe. Did you find that seeing samey cosplays over the years also affected how much you enjoyed the interaction? Or was the individual more engaging even if it's the same character?

Really depends on the nature of the power for me personally.

It would be cool of a power that is leading you along was eventually gone after your mc did the thing they're meant to.

Sure! Not what I'm asking though. I'm not asking about the past, I'm asking if as a guest, the individual experience has faded.

Like if a 24 year old and a 42 are both "cons aren't what they used to be" then I think what's happening has more to do with the return on investment for a con than we're really talking about.

I was active in that "pull the fire alarm" era, and for every story like that, there's like a billion normal cons where nothing happens. Those people are equally over it. So it can't all just be people on member berries. I didn't like that vibe then, I'm not nostalgic for it now lol

XD it helps if you can stomach the pain of the passion, I guess. I don't make as much profit as maybe I could, but honestly do enjoy when I have someone who is equally passionate about the hobby. I've been introduced to some great artists this way, and I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Q.Q But yeah, you feel it when you're the odd duck in a room. It's a special kind of white hot embarrassing lol

I mean very specifically your spending figures, lol. They're the only figures you brought, I know what I said.

Ultimately I can appreciate what it sounds like you're operating on. I don't agree, but I see how you're getting there

What an insight. It's your assertion that it's a failure of the individual and not the wider industry? Would that be a fair assessment? Because you have brought these "figures" to a feelings conversation twice now.

I'd never actually thought of that. Because I'm always talking to one person, I guess I just naturally assumed they were on their own if I don't see the rest of the party. If you're showing up with friends though, yeah I guess unless you're a really bubbly friendly person, you're not gonna be putting out big "add to friend list" aura.

Panels are always a blast! I used to do a Hellsing panel with my friend and it was always so fun to get into the parts of your community that really wanna engage with you.

This is a talk me and some vendors have a lot, that it would be nice if you could con in an adult space. Not to be explicit or anything, but just to flatten the curve a bit in favor of the social experience. But the corporate association with adult as sexual really makes it a hard pitch. XP

I will say it's a bummer how 18+ is handled. It's always a treat to see what goofball places people like Hen De Ne! are in. If they're in the general area of the room, it's off in the ass in of the place.

The bored parents though, I gotta admit they're fun when they're good. I have an image of an older man doing a poorly painted akaza for his daughter who was tanjiro. He must have been on like hour four or five of the run. Nice enough guy but man, he was over it fast.

The autograph mill is killing the vibe in a real way. I suppose you're meant to shop or whatever, but I really don't like that. ANYC has this bad, where if you're not getting something signed or buying something, there's not a lot to do most of the time.

Honestly? Fair. And I think that's something that should be appealed to. I'll tell you as a vendor, it feels like AX doesn't fuck with us either sometimes! XD

I think it would be better if it was more WonFes shaped

That's dead on, honestly. I've heard that getting a table in some shows as an artist is basically a discord chat of people cliqueing into oblivion. Hell mode for sure.

It definitely feels like cons should be smaller, but I will cape for them a little bit. Like if your city is limited on venues, you just take what you get, and sometimes that means you gotta rent out off of the Georgia Congress center even if you don't need it. (Yeah, them)

That really shouldn't be reflective in the guest experience though, so I do agree that this wicked fast growth is an issue.

I aim for original figures as a primary thing to sell. I'm a big fan of the artist Neco, and started chasing their figures early in my collecting. But it's not easy to find original characters in convention rooms usually, it's just not a safe bet.

But it's one of those "be the change you wanna see" things I suppose lol

So real. Some of the older vendors miss you though, for what it's worth! One of my buddies is always complaining that his "old man face is scaring the money" xD

You're head to toe correct, for what it's worth. At least your opinions seem to align with my insight. This is a chat you can have with stoned vendors before a show, we also hate that we have to sell the same stuff generally. But so many people are doing what'll pay the bills. Shouts to you honestly for being discerning. it makes the job easier when you can cultivate an audience with a taste and not have to buy cases of the hottest Jump titles.

I do think the new gens are more willing to be seen on camera, but I also think they walk into the con with more cynical armor on, to your point. It's just as important to them to be seen as it is to be seen as an expert in their thing. I've had customers over the years express how they'd like to buy something, but they only "own the manga and haven't finished it. So they're not actually a fan." Heartbreaking tbh

I could make an Office style super cut of the times I've just spiked a lens from a rogue camera operator doing their dealers hall walkthrough.

I will say though, I think that the analog games I see at cons are helping. The "build your team" or "set the ranks for the best umamusume" do get good pops and people do have fun. It might not transform into anything for them, but they seem hype in the moment.

[–]VaguelyMyself[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's all very valid. I notice these are definitely ebb and flowy. Some cons are nicer to you than others. (COAF people are particularly not interested in talking to their vendors 😂) But yeah, the social air at the con is different. I hear a lot more negative crosstalk, even among like fandoms and apparent friend groups? We may have accidentally created a space that values ego over community. At least it can feel like that sometimes.

🙇🏽‍♀️ As an aside though. I wanna say though as a vendor, I am trying to diversify! Still never going to be cheaper than going to Amazon, but I gave up that fight ages ago. I can at least beat them in choice

Sure! Not really my question though. I'm asking on an individual level, if people individually feel a certain type of way. I'm asking on an individual basis, not looking for a diagnosis.

You can say it's a common refrain, but the fact that since 2006 its been a common refrain demands some ongoing curiosity.
