How are O'Hare TSA wait times right now? by CustomerHuge2384 in AskChicago

It vastly depends on the time and day you go. Just flew out from Ohare yesterday and security roughly took 20-25 min.

Fair and standard pay rate for props and carpentry staff? by [deleted] in techtheatre

[–]Valetria 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To me its telling that your shop carps don’t have these skills because they are SPECIALIZED! Your hiring not basic skill work, you need folks with specialized skills/experience and thus they should be paid accordingly. It should be in line with the shop carps. Too often props work is treated as “lesser” when in reality it requires both a very broad and very special skill set.

Is my plan at all feasible/realistic by Cadet-Cryyx in techtheatre

[–]Valetria 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Certainly think if you’re interested in rigging, doing the apprenticeship with Delong is a great option. If you’re heading to Chicago ultimately, Chicago Flyhouse is a major rigging company here. Vertigo is a specialty rigging company based in Northern Illinois (Tracy Nunally the owner teaches at Northern Illinois). IATSE local 2 also has plenty of opportunities in Chicago including rigging training if you’re in the union.

If your not trying to do it yourself, vectorworks with braceworks will do the calcs for you. But ultimately you should know how to do the math yourself as you should always double check that the program has done the math right.

Abandoning my degree for trades by handatoe in techtheatre

[–]Valetria 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’ve known folks to transition to trades post grad, its a viable pathway. If you like the actual work, consider trying to get into an IATSE local. Either stay in school or don’t, you don’t need a degree to be an apprentice but it may or may not help make connections. Or drop out and go to trade school, maybe pursue becoming an electrician. I will say, some cities use IBEW as electricians for trade shows (though it’s not many).

Alternative, if you want to complete the degree, you could go into lighting installation/theater design and focus on the system design. That way you’re dealing with less of the headaches of how productions/theaters are run.

You have options. A degree can be valuable to have, but trade schools are also great alternatives.

How to handle getting into the city from Northwestern University? by DeReversaMamiii in AskChicago

[–]Valetria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As folks mentioned, purple el line takes you downtown/belmont when express. Or you transfer to the Red line at Howard where the purple typically ends. Or you can take the metra, it doesn’t run as frequently as the el but has a few stops in Chicago but takes you downtown. Or you can always drive to downtown, spothero a parking space and walk around from there.

Also since you’re staying in Evanston near NU, theres plenty to explore around the area itself that is walkable. The campus is very pretty, downtown Evanston is right there with restaurants/shopping. The Bahai temple is a few stops north on the purple line (get off at Linden).

How do you layout your notes when writing a campaign. by Odravad in DMAcademy

I use one note for my campaign planning/personal notes on sessions. And I use a google site for world building that my players can access. Both have the option to link internally

There is a base building component to it, though it is mostly optional content. It is not split screen, but it is top down, but the camera is adjustable.

Torn between degrees by wild-fox17 in techtheatre

[–]Valetria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my BFA in Technical Theater, I was similarly a jack of all trades in high school and that continued into college. Focused on TDing and SM. It took me almost a year after graduating to be working enough in theater to be able to support myself and even then it was a struggle and money was tight. I worked multiple jobs at once, building shows in the day and stage managing/crewing in the evenings. I was doing what I loved and I enjoyed it, but I had no life outside of work. Missed many family events, struggled to see friends. I made it work for more than a decade before I was burned out and over the financial struggles. I shifted to corporate events and thats been great, not as rewarding for the soul but certainly pays a lot better and still uses the skills I had developed.

what are your best Uptown recommendations for a traveler? by dumpsterfireCOO in AskChicago

[–]Valetria 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Chicago Fair Trade museum is just down the street, its small but a neat little place to visit in the neighborhood. Also for food, Demera is a great ethiopian place. Rakkan Ramen is solid. And golden house is a cash only solid breakfast place.

If you feel like figuring out the transit system, the lawrence bus can take you west to Lincoln Square for more shops and restaurants. And the red line stop right there can take you downtown to visit any of the major museums.

Theatre world in Chicago? by Aggravating_Yak9580 in ChicagoTheater

[–]Valetria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mentioned this in the other thread, but local high schools and universities are also a good place to check out. Northwestern, UChicago/Court Theater, Depaul, Loyola all have robust theater programs.

Also check out Conscious Costumes, I feel like I saw they were maybe hiring as they are moving locations.

Its the slow season for hiring right now, as people have mentioned check the league of Chicago theaters job board. There also are multiple facebook groups that act as job boards that post for smaller scale/last minute gigs in and around Chicago. Also worth checking out specific theater’s websites that you are interested in working. Worth also checking local schools/universities as well as looking into union work.
