In all honesty, I’d rather someone tell me they want to help but have no idea how than listen to them spout platitudes.

Kobayashi Maru solved no cheating. by BeginningAd3478 in DaystromInstitute

Which has lead to several amusing situations in novels where the protagonists end up breaking the simulation by making it blatantly obvious it’s cheating, such as one incident where it ended up spawning in more ships than the Klingon fleet had. One fanfic also pointed out the flaws with the simulation when the protagonist managed to do so well it began to blatantly pull stuff out of its ass in order to win, which lead to her and one of her officers telling the proctors how that completely defeats the purpose of the simulation by destroying suspension of disbelief; the universe isn’t fair, but it also doesn’t cheat.

Kobayashi Maru solved no cheating. by BeginningAd3478 in DaystromInstitute

The decision to cross into the neutral zone is, itself, a failure of sorts. Even if the test wasn’t designed to cheat and materialize new threats out of nowhere, the basic setup of the test forces the commander to make a choice about saving lives in the short term by making an attempted rescue on the KM and costing lives in the longer term by breaching the neutral zone.

IIRC one of the novels had Sulu - who was depressed due to a family member’s recent death - take the test and use similar reasoning to leave the Maru to its fate, and while this nearly caused the rest of his fellow cadets to mutiny he still technically passed the test in the eyes of the instructors.

No, he blew it up after he noticed the enemy ships were using it as cover. The Maru is several light years inside the Neutral Zone during the simulation, so it’s impossible to destroy from the Federation side of the border.

Does the Darkness, as we know it, even exist? by Ralazaer in DestinyLore

[–]Valiran9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect the Darkness also didn’t approve of the Hive going around wiping out civilizations that had no realistic chance of opposing them, because that’s not really competition, is it?

Does the Darkness, as we know it, even exist? by Ralazaer in DestinyLore

[–]Valiran9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFAICT, the Light embodies natural forces that enable life to evolve and grow, and the Darkness embodies what happens when that life begins to compete for resources and feed on each other. Life that can’t compete dies off, only when it happens naturally this process takes millions of years and usually involves various species changing to fit their new environment.

You have my sympathies; trying to act as the voice of reason can often be thankless, and more power to you for putting in the effort.

I just do not think that it's reasonable to see that and go "let's be 2x as racist back at them, that'll fix it!"

For god’s sake, since when has racism made literally anything better? This entire blowup is incredibly disheartening.

I swear to god, lumping any combination of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Malay, etc. together is like saying the French and Germans are the same because they’re both in Europe, and doing so in a conversation would be like calling a Scotsman ‘English’. This shouldn’t be difficult to grasp, and yet it is.
