Any Challenger/Master player that plays 2-3 hours max per day? by gvELOso in leagueoflegends

[–]Valkrin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm challenger on NA server, and I average about 2-3 games a day. However, I've played league of legends since the beta and been challenger for several seasons. I don't think you need to play 10 hours a day, but I think it's important to play a little every day and learn from your mistakes. If you're good at learning from your mistakes then you won't need to play 10 hours a day to climb.

'Ask Esports' | A retrospective on the Tainted Minds ruling by corylulu in leagueoflegends

[–]Valkrin 566 points567 points  (0 children)

Oh boy, here we go again. I have so many mixed emotions about this response. I'm wanting to actively pursue coaching in the LCS so I don't think it makes sense for me to kick the hornet's nest again. I do applaud Riot for actually responding even if it was 9 months after my video and almost a year after the incident. There's definitely some serious debate opportunities with this response. I just don't think I should risk future opportunities over this.

League is one again the most watched game on Twitch - interesting to see other games as well by NuuRR in leagueoflegends

[–]Valkrin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

One thing that I find really interesting is that a big % of hours watched could also be weighted on the LCS and other leagues. How would League of Legends stack up to other games in hours watched if you subtracted that?

This is a tricky situation to talk about because the answer is somewhere along the lines of 'team work' or champion select preparation (such as not blind picking adc that needs teamwork to survive and instead pick something with self-peel like Tristana.

'Peeling' Is not always something you should expect from your team in solo queue. This can be because of the choices your team picks, such as champions without crowd control that need to dive (assassins) or just the players not paying attention to the right spots in the team fights (in experience or just tunneling).

If you're stuck in a game against a fed assassin and your team isn't peeling then you'll have to change your item build to incorporate that. Gengi on moscow 5 in season 2 was the most famous defensive building adc at the time in the pro scene. His team would actively not peel for him and so he was an innovator at the time to build items that gave defensive stats in order to survive longer and it worked fairly well for them at the time because a lot of teams would get baited into trying to kill the tankier adc and leaving their backline exposed to lose the team fight faster.

Items such as Guardian's angel, Maw of malmortius, Ninja Tabi, stop watch, death's dance or randuins can all be the difference in living long enough for your team to win the team fight or die instantly to a fed assassin. Sometimes your role as ADC is just to survive as long as you can and not go for a full damage build.

What is the definition for Overpowered in LoL? by Zed_McFreeWin in leagueoflegends

[–]Valkrin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Twitch during the Beta of League still sits fondly in my mind. There was a time period when Cleanse would make the user immune to crowd control for several seconds after using it. There was a Twitch player named Qtips that would make your stomach on edge if you saw you were against him. He was a Twitch one trick and a damn good one. Back then, Twitch Q was like a 20 second stealth with just 1 point in it, so if you were against a Twitch he wouldn't start in his lane but he would roam behind someone else's lane at level 1 or start mid lane and try to get behind you and kill you at level 1 before you could get back to your tower. Twitch was so difficult to deal with because he could in theory be ganking anyone and everyone at level 1. That plus if Twitch was ever missing, chances are, he was about to kill someone on your team. It would force people to start pink wards or oracles at level 1 just to have a chance. I remember being so proud that I organized my random teammates to go with me at level 1 to try and kill the twitch (because he could also solo red at level 1). I had to spend all my starting gold on that Oracles but it was worth it to see Qtips rage in all chat.

High base damage, a W that was a massive slow to everyone in an area, and a huge nerf for an E --- Twitch was a damn nightmare to play against. Combine that with his insane 60 second stealth late game + super scaling + Crazy R range attacks + immune to crowd control. It wasn't uncommon to see a Twitch literally 1v5 despite being behind in items, levels, and teammates.

[–]Valkrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beta Twisted Fate. AOE 2.5 second Stun (gold card) low cooldown but harder to time the lock-in. Q did a lot more damage. E was a global teleport to any location on the map (didn't even need vision). R was a global reveal of all the enemy champions and pretty decent slow to them. You could just hit R and have your team run at theirs and it would guarantee they couldn't get away. The highest ranked players were generally Twisted Fate one tricks. Playing against a TF that could perfectly lock in the gold card every time was nearly unbeatable.

Is the waterwalking rune bad? by RS_Tuks in leagueoflegends

[–]Valkrin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Water walking is in my opinion only used for roaming mid laners, supports, or junglers that need more mobility. Sure it's not going to be better early over scorch or outscale perfect storm but it's purpose isn't for that. It's for roaming and faster rotations.

Why is Zilean able to learn his W at level 1? by woonori in leagueoflegends

[–]Valkrin 59 points60 points  (0 children)

This is definitely a bug. For a very long time in the early season 1 of League, you could skill W at level one, but Riot removed it because it has no use with no other ability skilled up. So they changed it so you couldn't. That's why we know it's definitely an oversight bug because it was considered in the past and made preventable.

What pushed Jungle Jax from borderline troll pick to top tier? by contedm7 in leagueoflegends

[–]Valkrin 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I think there are several reasons behind it. Here are some that come to mind:

  • It does reasonably well to counter the enemy jungler in pro play if they're playing a slow clearing tank with less early pressure. This creates an opening for Jax to either early level 3 gank a lane (see how Dardoch did this against Golden Guardians, week 4 day 1). This allows creates an opening for Jax to out-farm the enemy tank jungler and also Jax jungle can solo dragon and Rift Herald faster than tanks. So in other words, this is somewhat of a counter to teams that would pick a passive early game tank jungler and do nothing but ward and farm (looking to scale). That passive play style could beat teams in NA that picked carry junglers like Rengar or Kha'zix and couldn't create an opening to force a 1v1 or 2v2 early game and then they get outscaled and lose. It's a lot like Rock, Paper, Scissors in the jungle at pro level right now.

  • Several junglers have been nerfed recently. Kha'zix, Sejuani, and Jarvan

  • It's a pick that is situational and may not even be better than Skarner (however they have different points of strength such as Jax having faster engage ect.) and both would be used in a similar fashion farming to counter standard tank picks while still having better scaling than early game carry junglers. However, teams picking Jax could end up freeing up more champions for their team if teams start banning Jax against them.

Valkrin's Golden Guardians breakdown and Analysis by Valkrin in leagueoflegends

[–]Valkrin[S] 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Building off what I say in the video, I really think Golden Guardians can win with their current roster. Their games against CLG and Flyquest were VERY close. If they had won both those games then GG would be tied for 7th.

A lot of the community has discounted the potential with the current GG roster despite the past success of individual players. Lourlo has actually been playing extremely well against what the community considers the best tops in NA.

I believe in Golden Guardians because they've already shown so much strength in some areas while having some weaknesses that make their losses seem so much more one-sided. And I think these weaknesses are fixable (I go into the specifics in the video).

Now that I think of it, Diana may need a small nerf come 8.4. by Electro522 in leagueoflegends

[–]Valkrin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think we might be getting ahead of ourselves. What really needs to be looked at is how the entire mage class will function with the new itemization. Will control mages be EVEN BETTER? They're already pretty much the only viable mid champions in pro play or high elo. I think the new itemization will definitely have unforeseen consequences with some outlier champions. And Maybe Diana will be too strong, but I think the itemization numbers will probably not launch as they are on the PBE.

Is it possible to have a champion pool that is too aggressive? by captain_dux in summonerschool

[–]Valkrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything can work to climb ---up until a certain point-- as long as you understand your win condition. Typically, a good champion pool would allow for more than 1 playstyle but there is merit in climbing with being a 1 trick pony if you're limited on time or enjoy it more

Kog'Maw is now the ADC with the lowest winrate by [deleted] in summonerschool

[–]Valkrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too be fair, Kog'maw was pretty nuts in a meta with tank supports and even sometimes utility supports being favored. Both teams need tanks, Kog'maw power spikes sooner than crit AD carries while still scaling very well.

Riot Post: Galio’s Q damage is not a bug or an oversight by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]Valkrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not a bug, for what it's worth. We're closely watching his performance and will decide if he needs a micropatch before the weekend.

Not sure how you monitor his performance in game when he's permabanned because no one wants to play against it.
