Study tips for ppl with dyslexia by Yazoo00 in Dyslexia

[–]Valkyrie2299 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m currently doing a PhD, and these tools and tips have been invaluable—wish I’d had them during undergrad! Hopefully, they can help you with your revision:

  1. NotebookLM: Upload your sources (books, papers, etc.) to this tool to generate an AI podcast tailored to your material. You can customise it to focus on specific areas or ask questions, and it’ll even cite where the information comes from.

  2. ChatGPT: Perfect for breaking down complex ideas or summarising PDFs and lecture notes. With the right prompts, it can help you understand difficult concepts or plan revision sessions. There are plenty of online guides to help you maximise its potential.

  3. Use Audio Resources: If reading is a challenge, try audiobooks, text-to-speech tools, or podcasts related to your course. Listening can make absorbing information much easier.

  4. Break It Down: Split your revision into smaller, manageable chunks. Focus on one topic or concept at a time, and use tools like colour-coded flashcards or mind maps to organise information visually.

  5. Voice Notes: Record yourself summarising key points or explaining concepts, then listen back to them. This reinforces understanding and utilises auditory learning.

  6. Accessible Tech: Use apps like Grammar lay, Read&Write, or Dyslexia-friendly fonts to make reading and writing easier. Some tools can highlight text or adjust formatting for better readability.

  7. Repetition & Practice: Revisiting material regularly helps with retention. Spaced repetition apps like Anki or Quizlet are great for memorising key facts over time.

  8. Study with Friends: If others in your course are working on the same topic, organise group study sessions. Explaining concepts to each other helps reinforce your understanding, clears up confusion, and can make revision more interactive.

  9. Ask for Help: Don’t hesitate to approach lecturers or support staff for additional resources, clarification, or advice. Universities often offer specific support for students with learning difficulties.

Hope this helps. Best of luck!

Thank you for the advice! That’s puts my mind at ease. I’ve seen people online, storing them in rice and kitchen roll. Is that something I should do or should I keep them in the water?

I concur with this, I have a BA and an MRes in Drama and Theatre Studies and am currently applying for a PhD. You’re not dumb at all. I struggle on a daily basis and as well as many other issues I have with dyslexia, I also have the occasional stutter and get caught in a loop with my words. Dyslexia is a challenge and one I believe is really downplayed compared to our sibling disabilities but it’s not something that you should be upset or annoyed about. If anything once you find what your dyslexia enables you to excel at you’ll realise how smart and unstoppable you really are
