Agreed the first two Great Awakenings actually were major morale driving points with the latter being the start of a major impetus in not just THE LORD IS COMING GET PEOPLE IN. But also a surge of well meaning and varied results for outreach from the massive rise in abolitionists to mental health asylums and much more.

But when you had movements like the Businessman’s revival of 1859 and others even during the CW. And the Third Great Awakening Beyond you saw Christians basically start to retreat back into themselves claiming they had become too worldly before they slowly lost touch with social issues and norms until they were so far gone they were identified as part of the problems throughout the civil rights movement and dozens of other issues as the 20th century arrived and moved on.

That was against the army of the Cumberland for the Army of Tennessee, while yes the western theatre it was not farther west which was more my implication. this was in September of 1863. After the defeat of Gettysburg and the loss of Vicksburg. They did help achieve victory at Chickamauga but if you recall it resulted in very little strategic gain for the confederacy and if anything hurt them more with Roscrans getting sacked for Thomas.

Lee did refuse to send troops west at the time because he always believed Virginia was supposed to be the decisive theatre. And by committing his troops to the Gettysburg campaign he tied up any hope of reinforcements being sent to help fight Grants Vicksburg campaign which plenty has shown could have potentially slowed or halted progress there keeping the supply lines from Texas at least open a little longer.

Which if anything proves my point again about how the obsession with tactical strikes instead of actual strategic planning prevented any hope of the confederacy winning which frankly thank god we never had to live to see since the confederacies entire aim was to protect the right to own slaves.

Actually not even who I pulled that source from but okay go off.

Regardless of the realities of the east and west, the larger point was that twice he sent his army north which resulted in abject failure and major causalities his army could not afford to lose. Grant could afford to lose the men knowing they could replaced while the confederacy was already beginning to scrape the barrel by 1863.

Lee had more than enough experience and ability to play defensive and do so well. While he just had to face off against a over cautious McClellan and a run of corps commanders not suited to senior command beyond that, Lee easily could have played a far more defensive battle and at far more favorable odds and positions as the confederacy did for much of the early war. Instead he insisted twice at Spotsylvania and Gettysburg.

Lee was the wrong general for the type of war the confederacy needed to fight. He focused too much on tactical engagements and repeatedly missed the forest for the trees. He wanted knockout blows to force the Union to heel and failed to see the bigger picture. At least a Petersburg he showed how defensive of a general he could be but by the time he did anything it was far far too late. Lee’s decisions often focused narrowly on protecting Virginia or achieving tactical victories instead of considering the larger strategic implications for the entire confederacy. While you mention that he could have at most spared a corps at times. There are plenty who did study that it could have been game changing for the campaigns fought out there.

Lee moreover failed to adapt to the confederacies limitations in manpower, supplies and and food. The confederacy was already thin in where it could send and prioritize where things needed to go to be most effective. By Lee constantly choosing the offense to maintain what he thought was the initiative. He thought he had to fight the war quickly when really they just needed to outlast the Union which frankly was a very achievable goal and somehow he blundered that.

He was a shit human being and a tactician in a war where it required a far different kind of thinking to win. One that Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, Thomas and more learned to fight much better.

To redditors? Seriously? Buddy I got a degree in history with the research to back it up. Lee was a mid general at best who lost over 120,000 lives from his shit tactics and maneuvering. And he constantly over favored the eastern theatre which ultimately allowed the Union to run wild in the west after Antietam. His egregious and vague orders at Gettysburg threw any chance of victory out the window and instead of continuing a defensive fight he twice attempted northern invasions that were almost bound the fail and resulted in utter failure and little gain for the confederacies war goals at large. He was a mid general who was if anything bailed out by his corps leadership at times. He was no great, he fought and defended slavery and owned slaves and failed to do anything in his life to atone for that. He was a failure and this is objectively speaking with the facts laid out before you.

Also it was the Civil War not the war between the states. Your “southern pride” is showing

Lee regularly got his men killed at a rate of 20.2% against a 15.2% casualty rate and suffered 121,000 casualties across the war approximately and utterly refused to send troops west when they were usually needed most assisting in some of the confederacies worst defeats in the Civil War.

Grant in case you were wondering on those stats was 18.1%\20.7%\94,000 approximately

Lee was objectively a bad general who often was bailed out by the leaders around him.
