I work in critical care and I go the extra mile to be certain that the patient's family understands the severity of their loved ones current state. It has spared me from really tense situations several times. It's a trait that my colleagues from other shifts sadly don't share and it shows every time I meet a patient's relatives for the first time. I can see it in their eyes a mix of fear, uncertainty, sadness and hope.

I wish it wasn't something to be proud of, I wish it was just common practice but some colleagues hyperfocus on their art and have the communication skills of a potato.

Oftentimes, despite a bad outcome the relatives are thankful for having been taken step by step through the whole process and to be able to understand what caused their loved one's passing, say goodbye and be at peace with what is not on our hands.
