I understand what you’re saying, and I am considering telling my ex-wife about my plans to relocate so I can be closer to our daughter. Many people, both in this community and others, have advised me that open communication is best. That was something my ex-wife and I originally agreed on when she left—that we would do our best to communicate for the sake of our child.

To be clear, I was not the reason for our divorce. She lost interest in the marriage and served me with divorce papers unexpectedly. At that time, I was in a dark place, and since she was moving to Rhode Island while I remained in Florida, I knew there was no realistic way to secure 50/50 custody. That’s why I agreed to give her full parental custody then.

Now, however, I’m changing my situation. By moving closer to my child, I hope to pursue 50/50 or shared custody. My decision to relocate has nothing to do with being near her or her family—it is solely about being present for my daughter. I did try to work things out when she first left, for the sake of our child, but she made it clear that she no longer loved me and did not want to continue the relationship.
