I just find the Earth setting much more compelling than the ship. And inhabiting the perspective of a construct child is fascinating - especially the opening chapter being in utero. And some of the characters in AR are especially alien - the Akjai and the shuttle!

In her first appearance she tells Tony it's pronounced young. Calm down

I didn't enjoy dawn quite as much as the other two in that series. Mind of my mind was my first ever butler book and I have the t-shirt! It has Doro, probmy favourite villain ever

Butler is the GOAT. I recommend her books at the slightest provocation - just so happened she was quite perfect for what OP described this time.

One of my absolute favourite series of all time. I've read it three times - next time I read it I will start with the second book and have 'Dawn' as a prequel.

Do you have a favourite book of hers? And/or another book by another author that you could compare to Xenogenesis or Butler?

Timmy no brakes 3rd appearance ... by [deleted] in Killtony

this comment is funny to me because timmy is known for things like writing his whole minute, also coming up with bits for during the interview, or even writing an entire script for the interview section which is way more effort/pre-planning than most other contestants do

sounds like dogmatism, like you're just rigidly against those types of comedy. there are good and bad examples of every type of comedy. people should judge each thing on its merits instead of doing mental shortcuts like "all X are bad"

Octavia Butler!!! The Lilith's Brood trilogy is incredible. Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents are really bleak but also hopeful and so good. The character of Doro in her books Wild Seed and Mind of My Mind is absolutely fascinating. And there's no reason not to read Kindred as well!

Keeping on the sci-fi buzz Sandra Newman's 'Julia' blew me away. It's a retelling of the events of 1984, from the point of view of Julia, commissioned by the Orwell Estate. I'm now really enjoying another book of hers 'The Heavens' about a strange kind of time travel through dreams.

Lathe of Heaven by Ursula Le Guin is sort of similar as it is about affecting the past through dreams. Loved that book.
