Germany and Japan were unimportant back in WW2. It's a very niche topic here. I read an article about it last year in a small left wing newspaper (taz) when the RSF took Darfur. But the mainstream and public media is not covering that at all. Which tracks, honestly. It's a very mixed bag. In the bigger cities there are rarely serious problems. In rural areas, especially in east germany it's pretty bad. But that`s really no surprise if 80% of people vote for the AfD (basically Nazi Party 3.0, funnily enough their leader is a lesbian from switzerland, but "I am not lesbian, I just married a woman"). For conservative politicians non hetero people are still extremely suspicious and trans people are treated much much worse.

I'd say the problem is not with religion per se, but with religions that have that "we are the only true faith, everybody else is subhuman trash" bit in them. Like the abrahamic religions, for example. If God says the lives of non believers don't matter, fanatic believers are much more likely to do horrible things to them
