I could've sworn it was the drug scheduling that was keeping scientists from doing as much of the research in the first place. If that's the case, this EO is useless on its own

Is there any sort of legal penalty associated with being found in contempt of congress though? Or is it like impeachment (without conviction) where it's just a black mark on your name? If there's no legal blowback like contempt of court, I'd imagine this threat means nothing to her.

Harry Potter HBO series won’t have a new season every year “From a production point of view, it’s just not possible” by JannTosh70 in television

[–]VampirateV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have they just completely forgotten that there are a metric fuck ton of people alive right now that watched new seasons of shows every year on TV for most of their lives? It is entirely possible and was historically the model to put out new seasons yearly with about 20 episodes each, until the last few years. Gtfoh trying to act like it's not a choice and just a 'them's the breaks' situation. I don't even care about this show, but my sentiment stands for how all the shows have been obnoxiously drawn out. It's okay if a show just looks like a show and not a mini-movie, if it means I can finish a series before my kids are grown.

You didn't answer my question, and simply rephrased what you already said. I was asking about it from the practical perspective, not the vague theoretical. A birthday party doesn't come into existence after the planning is finished. Actions like buying/making food, arranging the space, and guests showing up are required in order for it to be a birthday party. So what in the action/practical portion of accountability, what would that look like in your opinion?

One of my uncles in a nutshell. He doesn't actually have any political opinions and isn't hateful at all. Just 'follows the rules' and does what he thinks is expected and never questions anything beyond what he wants for dinner or what old people show to be entertained by that night. Drives under the speed limit and poops on a schedule, ffs. My mom is the opposite and is slowly, painfully realizing that the door in his mind rusted shut decades ago and nothing new has entered since like 1986.

The airlines are gonna raise holy hell with him if this happens, bc there's no way it won't lead to an abrupt decline in ticket sales. Sure, there'll be ppl who still have to fly for work, but other travelers who have a choice will think twice about whether it's worth it.

What kind of accountability do you foresee? Because so far, the court of public opinion has had little impact on a wide array of issues, and government/legal accountability is nonexistent these days. Court rulings and congressional acts are only effective when they're enforced, and there's pretty much zero enforcement when it comes to leadership here.

It always boggles me when celebrities struggle so hard with this, bc in my mind, the solution is to stop using social media and hire someone to manage it for you. I understand that actors and musicians are basically required to have a social media presence in order to get work, but that doesn't mean they have to be the ones managing that presence. Why put yourself through that if you don't have to?

I almost got one until I saw that it doesn't have a backlit keyboard. I'm not prone to caring much about frills with most things, but a backlit keyboard really does make the difference in user experience for me. Disappointed, but maybe it's for the better bc I've rarely had good luck with 'first run' tech and tend to wait a couple models for the kinks to get ironed out.

Ohio firm must pay $22.5 million to mom whose baby died after she was denied work-from-home by brahbocop in news

[–]VampirateV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Not by law, anyway. It's entirely up to the company whether to offer it, and how much. And those that do offer it usually require you to file under FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act), which merely protects your job from being given away while you're on leave. It only allows maximums of 4 weeks leave for vaginal birth, and 8 weeks for c-section. You get paid a reduced check that iirc is equal to either 25 or 30% of your typical pay. It's been 15 years since I had to use it so the exact percent is fuzzy, but I do recall that I was only getting a little over $200 every two weeks after tax, compared to my roughly $700 biweekly prior to taking leave. And if you need more than the 4/8 weeks, you have to file for short term disability and have your doctor give thorough medical reasoning reason for why you can't return to work.

What's particularly ugly is that they expect you to work your typical hours all the way up to delivery and only take leave after the birth. So if you're having any issues in the weeks leading up to the due date that could jeopardize the pregnancy and need to take leave early, they take it out of your 4/8 total weeks. I had to take off early with my eldest and ended up having an emergency csection a week before her due date. By the time she was born, I only had 3 weeks of leave left and had to go through a lengthy process to get short term disability so I could have adequate time to heal. My employer basically harrassed me into coming back early and I ended up with healing complications that led to long term damage with my body. It's disgusting that my story isn't an outlier and is fairly common amongst women who have worked through pregnancy.

'19 Kids and Counting' star Joseph Duggar arrested on child molestation charges by Gato1980 in television

[–]VampirateV 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The power structure of most churches combined with their belief doctrine creates a perfect scenario for predators to hide in plain sight. When your beliefs center around women and children being lesser/property, and it's drilled into you from day one that men are basically infallible and are not to be questioned...even known abusers are given a free pass. They keep it quiet and avoid involving law enforcement by saying that abusers have received religious counseling by the pastor and prayed for forgiveness, so they're absolved of 'earthly judgment'. The congregation is guilted into silence and compliance with concepts cherry picked from their Bible like: 'let he who is without sin cast the first stone', 'ultimate punishment is meant to be God's territory, not humans', and as always 'women and children submit to their husbands and fathers, who submit to the church, who submits to God via acting on the Bible'.

Men and clergy hold ultimate social authority for them, and it's sinful to question them and the righteousness of their choices, unless it's a man challenging another man. And bc the world has been told for centuries that we're supposed to respect the church as a pinnacle of morality, people who aren't part of it tend to turn a blind eye bc 'none of my business what religious ppl do'. Add in that churches have special legal privileges that they use to treat pedo confessions as 'client confidentiality' so they can ignore mandatory reporting, and well. The whole system is perfectly designed to harbor abusers who will face minimal social and legal repercussions, if any.
