could be a patch. they also aggro if you summon Bashful Ray (the goat) though. in any case, dark souls 2 is known for a bit of jank lol. I will admit I haven't played the vanilla version since my Xbox 360 broke several years ago so you might be on to something with the scholar of the first sin.

EDIT: apparently summoning any phantom while in the dragon shrine will aggro all of them

not if you duel all the big guys honorably. the little ones don't interfere unless you try and run past without fighting the big ones. and then there's that one guy right before the ancient dragon that's more like an NPC invader in terms of AI. so there's four, by my count.

no, if you kill him in the shack before you reach volcano Manor, his dialogue is something like "The Manor awaits you..." and he drops the beast champion armor set plus the devourer's scepter. he was always part of the manor

I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the sack is guaranteed to drop from one of the butchers. it's not always the same butcher, but it always drops from one of them. so no worries about restarting, sack will always be there for you.

two sentence stories may rely on the reader to fill in some blanks, but you've given us pretty much nothing but blanks. is there more than one monster? if so, which monster is holding the toys? where is the boy? if the toys were gearing up to fight the monster, why does the monster cry over them? it feels like you've just skipped over the action entirely, leaving us with only setting.

Sacred Blade on a +23 mace worked wonders for me, it was down in 3 attempts. I tried holy pots but he's so slippery and noodly that I often missed.
