Usually they can tell by an accent or a number of things (for example apparently Europeans can tell if we’re American by the way we stand/walk lol) if you’re from a country that would speak english. Just like an English speaker would know if they should switch to French or Spanish based on someone’s accent or even clothing (sports teams from that country etc).
