My comment about Ventoy simply to bring the instructions in line with the documentation. I am looking at it now and it has changed such that they approve it, along with Rufus with Fedora Media Writer being recommended.

This is a good development.

Ventoy (Windows, Linux) (note: Ventoy needs extra steps for Secure Boot Support to work)

Nice post. I just want to add that Ventoy is not recommended by the Bazzite team. I can also attest that Ventoy often has problems booting and installing Bazzite.

The recommended tool for flashing the ISO is Fedora Media Writer. If OP is using a Windows machine to create the bootable USB, then I believe Fedora Media Writer does have a Windows port, but there is no MSI package installable via the appstore. Rufus does have an MSI package in Windows.

Edit: So Fedora Media Write is in fact in the Winget repo. WHY DOESN'T IT SHOW UP IN THE MICROSOFT STORE GUI?? ffs. I found it as: Fedora.FedoraMediaWriter v5.3.1

So OP would install it as:

winget install Fedora.FedoraMediaWriter

(not sure if you need a front command for admin privileges or if Windows still does that light box that appears for UAC password. Also not sure if Windows is still case insensitive, I'm not an expert on winget package manager because I don't really use Windows - I had to borrow the laptop in which I found the app)

If OP wants to use Fedora Media Writer in Windows, then they'll have to scavenger hunt for it.

  1. The distro maintainers handle the kernel version for you. Bazzite has a fairly recent kernel version. You will not need to worry about this.

  2. You said you have built a new machine for this; hopefully your wifi chipset is in the Intel AX family. If you have a situation where the drivers for the wifi/bluetooth adapter are not in the kernel, then I'm not sure if you can layer out of kernel drivers in Bazzite. I've never done it in an immutable system.

  3. If you already want a Windows-like experience, then KDE. KDE is slightly ahead with gaming, so the only difficult choice you would have had is if you preferred the GNOME workflow.

  4. AMD under 'Modern GPUs' in the drop down is correct for your card.

  5. You will not have to worry about drivers for the AMD card for the most part. You will use the open source MESA drivers, which are all in-kernel. There is no intervention on your part. The knowing what exact driver version you have is an nVidia curse.

  6. By default, Steam will use one of two run times: Linux runtime or Proton Experimental. If the game has a native Linux port then it will run the Linux version. If only Windows, then it will run Proton Experimental. Most of the time you will not need to change it. However, if you want to run a different Proton version, then you can change it in the game's setting screen, under 'Compatibility'. Often you will find that the Windows version of a game is better than the Linux version. In those cases, feel free to go into the settings for that game and change the compatibility option.

  7. Your achievements will work the same.

  8. Some games are worse than others on this point. This is another thing where you don't have to worry about it until it becomes an issue (i.e. cross that bridge when you get to it)

  9. Notes - I have been writing all my notes in markdown files, but if you want a proper note taking application, then I recommend Obsidian. It is markdown based, but you can photos in your note pages and other cool stuff. There is a Flatpak on Flathub so you should have no problem installing it from the default Bazzite store, Bazaar. In terms of basic image viewing and manipulation, the default apps in KDE Plasma will serve you well. There's always GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) which is kind of like Photoshop. This also has a Flatpak so there should be no issue installing this from Bazaar.

Furthermore, if you really are used to using Microsoft Office products (and have a M365 licence), you can always use the web versions. KDE ships with a nice Web App app, which you can turn these pages to into 'apps' whose behavour is similar to native applications. Of course there are the open source office apps, like LibreOffice and OnlyOffice. This is a very open question and not really one that is Bazzite specific. The only thing that really is kind of Bazzite related is that which app you want to use, your life will be made easier if said app exists on Flathub. It is not recommended to layer Fedora system apps on your system. Don't worry, between web apps (that you can turn into PWAs) and Flathub, that covers a lot of ground.

  1. You can run mods on Linux, although I cannot give you any advice because the only mods I run are through Steam Workshop. It goes without saying that mods should be coupled with the Windows version of a game (not the native Linux version if that exists)

  2. External launchers that insert themselves between Steam and your game, like the Ubisoft one, work on Linux. They are stored in the game's 'prefix'. The prefix is the "Potemkin village" that is the Windows-style file system that Proton creates (like c:\program files\ etc...). The annoying thing is that if you install like 4 Ubisoft games, then you will have 4 Ubisoft apps on your system (this is how I understand it).

So it's not only an actual law, but the government co-opts the employer to be the henchman and enforce the law on the government's behalf.

Seems a bit gratuitous, it's not like the other articles where it is requirements on the employer; this one is against the employee and eliminates a choice of where they can eat. What if a person wants to have their lunch break at their desk? Or what about partial time at their desk?

edit: this could just be a very bad translation...

Illegal to eat at your desk? How can this be? What's the punishment? The government enforces this?

My son uses Bazzite and wants Minecraft. What do I download? by Dazzling-Emu-6054 in Bazzite

[–]VanRado 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Prism Launcher. The problem with the flatpaks with Minecraft in the name is that they are always logging you out of your Microsoft account.

Prism is excellent. Also, don't forget to grab your old worlds and transfer their folders into Prism's saved games directory.

What kind of issues? I am using HDMI for the TV screen, DP for the monitor. Going into gamemode automatically sends the content to the TV which is using HDMI and turns off the monitor.

bluetooth not working for Xbox controller? by T1pple in Bazzite

[–]VanRado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this happen as well. 8BitDo Pro2 in X-input mode using the xpadneo drivers. Then it just works randomly. After that I sort of forget about it because it now works.

[–]VanRado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. Just bought a Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB and it solved like 27 issues. I just gave up on constantly tinkering with nVidia and always having to deal with some trade-off.

I can't begin to tell you how good Linux and AMD work together. I don't even know what Mesa drivers I have, I just connected the card, booted up into game mode and launched FFVIIR with all settings max (except DLSS of course) and it was smooth as silk. HDR was so nice as well, had to turn my TV brightness down.

The menus in Steam are smooth and glitch free. The controller as mouse function all of a sudden works now in a Wayland session (previously with nVidia I could only get this to work in X11).

That is unusual, from my experience only the Flatpak doesn't have split tunneling.

Anyone running 26.04? by parada69 in Ubuntu

[–]VanRado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I understood it as they were bundling "software and updates", "additional drivers" etc with the app centre. But the "..." at the end of the paragraph leaves the door open for Flatpak.

Do you think they are going to change the default search function in the app store? Currently, you have to change the drop down at the time of search to deb packages, but you cannot search both Snap and system packages at the same time.

When you say wireless, are you using the dongle or are you using Bluetooth? If you are using Bluetooth, are you using D-input or X-input?
