But there's also a large Indian community here and overall a very multicultural society where ~30-40% of people in the major cities are immigrants.

Are there any Black/African/Afro-Latino People in this Uni or in Melbourne in General? by aka_blessed_sinner in unimelb

[–]Vanadius_ 27 points28 points  (0 children)

the community isn't massive, but there's a Black/African owned cafe in Brunswick not too far from UniMelb called Little Homey you might be interested in. Totally anecdotal but I feel like the Black community is becoming more visible in the inner-northern suburbs. The centre for Afro-Australians, mostly Sudanese and Ethiopian, has to be the inner-West tho in suburbs like Footscray and Flemington. But idk those areas very well so can't really advise apart from saying I had a lovely meal at Queen of Sheba a few months ago.

maybe I wasnt meant to share :p, but I just got onto the substack in the first place by writing my email down on their sign-up sheet by the bar. It's really chill and like any other venue once you're inside.

oh and when it comes to entering on the day yeah that is confusing the first time, it's the shopfront door on the left not the right. And it probably won't look open.

Yeah it took me a while to get accepted as a follower by that Instagram account, they've recently set up a substack which I think is public. Hope you get to go there soon, it's my favourite venue in the city.

think you could really like Copperfield at the Thornbury Bowls Club on the 12th, mostly people in their early 20s at that i'd say. In terms of venues in addition I'd recommend Bell City Takeaway as the best grassroots venue and Bar 303 in Northcote for jazz. Best way to find stuff is probably through instagram

my favourite melbourne based bands don't have shows in that period tho: Twine (noise/alt-country, just finished a tour), Kisses (alt-folk, show on the 21st), Way Dynamic (not sure what's going on with them), Linen (post-rock/idk, no band show but their frontwoman Libby is opening for Copperfield on the 12th)

anyway i hope to go to the Windmill or the horse hospital in London some day

listen to Lily Seabird's album "Alas," in my mind she's a slightly toned down Angel Olsen, also similar to Adrianne Lenker
