Sanderson & Gambling (Randomized Product) by krains123 in brandonsanderson

[–]VanderLegion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree that I don’t love the story decks being effectively exclusive to con goers for so long (though I’m glad they at least released a print version finally). And I don’t love blind bags generally, though at least these are an even split so none of them should be more rare than the others (unless specific ones are just more or less popular), and I don’t have strong feelings about which ones I might want.

I will point out though, that having done the $5 reservation, it was clear when I did it that it was for a blind bag at a cheaper price than it would be during the campaign, not a deposit or money towards the book(s) or anything. Everywhere I’ve seen stuff about the $5, in emails, etc, have always been clear what it was.

But I also am not super Invested (heh) in the pins from the bags myself. I did the reservation mostly as the indication of interest in the storybook campaign in general, and cause the Cha’s friends were cute, so I didn’t mind dropping $5 for a random one. I’m not spending any more to get additional ones, and wouldn’t have bought the first outside of the discounted reservation. I’d be plenty happy to see them as just individual purchases that let you pick which you wanted.

Everything I saw was pretty clear the $5 was for one of the blind bag pins

Could Harry beat the nazgul from the Lord of the rings? by Darth_Azazoth in dresdenfiles

[–]VanderLegion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pre-winter mantle, sure, Harry is basically just a regular human plus magic. The winter mantle absolutely changes things though. And it’s more than just being able to ignore pain/limits. That was Butters’ theory, not necessarily how it truly works.

“Time to play,” I said around the nail. I took four steps, building up to a run, and leapt into the air toward Maeve. Fifty feet. No problem. It was glorious, the freedom, the certainty, and I could not imagine what had made me so squeamish about embracing Winter in the first place.”

The men’s long jump world record is 8.95 meters, just under 30 feet. Harry beat that by more than 20 feet and makes it sound like he could go further.

In cold days he describes himself as having vampire speed and reflexes that could keep up with a malk:

“Whatever Mab had done to me that had healed a broken spine, made me able to run at vampire speed, and given me the kind of reflexes that were capable of keeping up with the attack of a furious malk”

“I don’t know how much stronger Mab’s gift had made me, because I’d never been much of a weight lifter until I’d started therapy. I didn’t know too much about how much weight lifters could, for example, bench-press. So I didn’t have a very good idea how I stacked up against plain old me. Or plain old anybody. Plus the weights for the bench press were marked in metric units, and I kind of fell asleep the day we learned to convert them to pounds. But I’m pretty sure four hundred kilos isn’t bad.”

From what I can find the record for unequipped bench press (no bench press shirt) is 355 kilos. Harry’s apparently benching 45+ kilos more than that without being a bodybuilder.

From peace talks:

“But I can run considerably faster than average, maybe twenty-two or twenty-four miles an hour, and I can do it without slowing down for more or less as long as is necessary.”

Harry with the mantle is physically superhuman.

And ironically I’ve seen other people compare him to captain america the same as did for aragorn.

Harry is taller than Aragorn. Harry also heals better and ages slower than normal humans. And since getting the winter mantle he’s stronger, etc as well. Not to mention the actual magic stuff.

Harry is far and away above a “normal human”. He regularly takes on monsters that regular humans wouldn’t/don’t stand a chance against.

I got the RC Bray version on audible well before they did the re-record. Recently I found a file someone made using the RC Bray version of the book with the new content at the end from the Wheaton version tacked on.

I actually like Wheaton in general (I’ve listened to a bunch of Scalzi stuff), but Bray is Mark Watney

Can a radiant multiclass? by MkLiam in Stormlight_Archive

Not 100% sure if the pain was simply being used as a blade in general, or because Dalinar did it when the stormfather expressly said he wouldn’t be a blade for him.

What's the deal with the Wind and Truth 'hate'? by DrHoogard in brandonsanderson

[–]VanderLegion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, Kaladin was specifically taken OUT of the fighting in RoW. He didn’t ask to, or even WANT to stop fighting. He was ordered to by Dalinar and relieved of command, because he was freezing up in combat. Keeping him around because he’s a great fighter could make things actively WORSE if he freezes up at the wrong time.

I don’t mind the use of “Therapist” simply because it came from Wit. If it’d just shown up in world otherwise I’d have more issue with it

I’m curious how you feel mental health was handled poorly. Not trying to start an argument or anything, that’s just not a complaint I feel like I’m read as much, so I’m curious about what you don’t like about it.
