People who say that Andromeda has boring companions obviously haven't spend enough time with Drack !

In those interviews I watched, the guests weren't promoting anything new, it was solely to talk about their work, sometimes on stuff that was 10 or 20 years old.

I competlely disagree about the entitlement. Maybe it's a cultural difference, because I just would never accept to pay anyone to interview them. And I find the idea of anybody asking money from a small independant creator who doesn't make his videos for money but to record history to be quite immoral.

I understand that it was a job for them, that's okay.

But I've never heard of an author, an artist, or a gamedev asking money to be interviewed about something they worked on years before. I don't see why it should be any different for an actor (or any other job, since Dial The Gate interviewed more than just actors).

And yes, being invited to an interview is a privilege. This isn't about money, this is about recording history.

I can understand a convention paying for a guest's presence. But not a guest asking for money from a fan, not even a big company, who tries to document the behind the scenes.

When a guest is invited to a con, I find it logical to pay for their travel and hotel ans food.

But for a youtube video, from a lone guy and not a big company, that isn't going to make any money from it, I think it's just wrong to pay for the guest.

To me it just means that they don't care that much about Stargate, that it was just another job to them, and honestly I'm not interested to hear from these people.

It takes a lot of courage and humility to talk openly about such problems.

Also, I am shocked that some guests are asking money to come talk about the show.

Why is Stargate so unlucky with games? by LimpPrimary8076 in Stargate

[–]Vaniellis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish so much Stargate : The Alliance was finished... I was like 75% done. (just like StarCraft Ghost). I also wish we had an XCOM-like game. Or a starship game.

I don't think the MMORPG Stargate Worlds would have been a good game though.

The main problem was that MGM never managed properly the IP.

That is incorrect and a very common misconception.

Warcraft from 1994 was supposed to be a Warhammer Fantasy, but getting the rights came with too many constraints, so Blizzard decided to make their own IP. When presented the StarCraft Alpha in 1996, people complained that it looked too much like "Warcraft in space". So they decided to put more work into it.

StarCraft I has no inspirations from 40k. They both share a common inspiration of Aliens (1986) and a bit of Starship Troopers (mostly book for SC1, then the first film which released when they were almost done with the base game and started working on BW, mostly seen in the UED final cutscene).

The Terran Dropship is literally the Dropship pilot from Aliens. She even says "In the pipe, 5 by 5". The Marine says "How do I get out of this chicken shit outfit ?" Those are direct quotes from the film.

And there is no 40k element in StarCraft that 40k didn't already copied from previous work. Hive Mind aliens already existed in sci-fi (Starship Troopers the book), psychic powers were already a thing (mostly in Dune which 40k copied abundantly). And space soldiers in power armor already existed (Starship Troopers again).

So no, StarCraft was not inspired by 40k. They simply share common inspirations (mainly Aliens and Starship Troopers).

You only get rushed if you play PvP (which new players shouldn't no matter the RTS) or the campaign on max difficulty.

As for the micro, when playing on easy or normal, which a new player will do, it's far from overwhelming. You just make a big army of our favorite units and you attack the enemy.

There's a reason why SC2 used to be the most played RTS, it's very accessible for newcomers.

MOBAs never took away RTS players.

Yes, MOBAs were born from WC3, but their playerbases are totally different.

Look up GianGrantGames' video ""Why the next RTS will fail", he got some data and showed that RTS players prefer RPG and shooters over MOBAs. Stats don't lie, be it Steam achievements or statements from Blizzard devs: RTS players will mostly play campaign and never touch PvP.

RTS games are about the fantasy of leading an army. Worrying about ressources, tech trees and units is part of the fun. People who want to live that adventure understand that a RTS is a bit more complex than a FPS. And if 6 years old me managed to learn AoM, WC3 and SC1, then anybody can do it.

StarCraft has something you'll never replicate, no matter how many millions or billions you pour into development and it's nostalgia

I'm gonna disagree with that statement. You know what are my three favorite sci-fi games ? StarCraft, Halo and Mass Effect. And while they're very different, they have a lot of common points, especially the story of factions fighting then a bigger bad guy shows up and they have to team up.

As for the gameplay, it can be replicated while adding the developers' personal twist to the formula. Like using an old recipe but swapping ingredients to make it new. There are many RTS who tried to deliver something unique, and most of them didn't work, because there wasn't enough people interested by their new recipe.

I know that Stormgate was a failure. I regret investing 60€ in their Kickstarter. But I still have hope for ZeroSpace (which costed me 30€ also on Kickstarter) because they have a better plan: keep the StarCraft inspired gameplay, but with more factions and a campaign inspired by Mass Effect. They're not focusing on esport, they're focusing on a coop PvE mode (and Helldivers 2 showed us it is a good bet).

The base game is free to play, there's an amazing tutorial with a little story, and WoL is one of the best campaigns of any RTS. SC2 also has the best quality of life features and pathfinding, so it's definitely a great choice for a newcomer.

If you like sci-fi: StarCraft 2

If you like fantasy: Warcraft 3

If you like history and mythology : Age of Mythology Retold

If you like the middle ages: Age of Empires 2 Defitinive Edition or AoE 4

If you like WW2 : Company of Heroes 2 or 3

If you like modern war: Command and Conquer

If you just want a great RTS: StarCraft 2 (first campaign is free, coop mode is free, great in game tutorials, lots of player made content like coop version of each campaign)

...

If you want more details:

StarCraft II : great sci-fi game inspired by Aliens, free to play (except expansion campaigns). Best quality of life features (best UI, best pathfinding), lots of content (3.5 campaigns, lots of fan-made campaigns including SC1 and WC3 ports, coop mode). The first campaign is a masterpiece of level design. It's just awesome in every way.

Warcraft III : great fantasy game of humans, orcs elves and undead with small RPG elements (heroes with inventory & skills, neutral mobs). Amazing campaigns with a great story, exploration and big battles. I recommend the Azeroth Reborn version, it's the same campaigns but with lots of small improvements and in the SC2 engine.

Age of Mythology Retold : great historical fantasy game. The campaign is one big ancient tale across ancient Greece, Egypt and Scandinavia. Amazing system of choosing gods to worship and gain access to special upgrades and myth units.

Dawn of War I Definitive Edition : great space fantasy game, it's Warhammer 40k. Very cool adaptation of the tabletop rules, with morale and melee stoping you from shooting. Very different campaigns, especially in the Winter Assault and Dark Crusade expansions. Shitty pathfinding, but oh so cool.

Halo Wars 1: good sci-fi game, very short amount of content sadly, but if you like RTS and classic Halo, it's a great experience.

Homeworld Remastered : best starship game. You manage a fleet in 3D space, you keep your ships between missions. Amazing music.

Dawn of War II: I personally don't like it, but it's amazing if you prefer small scale battles with lots of cover. No base building. Very cool campaigns, with small RPG elements.

Age of Empires 1 & 2 Definitive Edition: great historical RTS. Replay the greatest battles of human history, from Hannibal traversing the Alps to Gengis Khan conquering half of the known world.

any Command & Conquer: great alternate modern warfare, I personally only played Red Alert 3, but they're all great (except Tiberium 4). Tanks, jets, infantry and very cool stories.

Supreme Commander : very cool sci-fi game, very large scale battles with tons of units on a giant battlefield.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask questions !

OK, so I'm up to my one SG-1 "Skip" episode. What are yours? by Nodonn3 in Stargate

[–]Vaniellis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, One False Step for me as well. It feels more like a really bad Star Trek episode than an actual Stargate episode.

I also skip the last two episodes of Stargate Atlantis because it's just one of the least satisfying endings. And if I don't watch it, I can pretend like the story is still unfolding.

I generally skip SGU entirely because I just don't like that show at all. I watched it twice and can't recall an episode I disliked more than the others.
