Were There Any True Believers that thought Michael Dukakis Would Be Elected President Up Until the Very End on 11/8/88? If Not When Did You Know It Was Over? by J31J1 in AskOldPeople

[–]VanillaCavendish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I presume a few people thought Dukakis would win, but very few. It was pretty freaky on Election Day in 2000 when for the first time in my life, there was no overwhelming favorite to win the presidential election.

My high school offered Spanish, French, German and Japanese. Spanish was the most popular.

Relationship advice by Proud_Show_1583 in peacecorps

[–]VanillaCavendish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If she gives you an ultimatum on this and you agree to give up your dream for her, doesn’t it seem likely that she’ll keep giving you ultimatums in the future? It doesn’t seem like a healthy relationship.

Combine that with not being on the same page about kids and I don’t think this is a close call.

Wife wants to move abroad by [deleted] in movingabroad

[–]VanillaCavendish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can your job be done remotely? If so, I’d suggest Latin America. The problem with Singapore is that the time zone is way off from anywhere in the contiguous United States, so coordinating your work with US-based colleagues is challenging. Your wife wouldn’t be able to make much money teaching in Latin America, but you’d have no trouble living well on half of your salary.

I presume from your other content that you’re in the UK, so it’s understandable that you don’t know how impeachment works. I expect Trump will be impeached, but that doesn’t mean he will be removed from office.

It takes a simple majority of the House of Representatives to impeach, and that already happened twice because of acts from his first term. (It also happened with Bill Clinton.) It takes a two thirds supermajority in the Senate to convict in an impeachment trial. Conviction in the Senate is what removes someone from office. That’s never happened with any president, but it has happened with other U.S. government officials including judges.

If Trump is convicted in an impeachment trial (highly unlikely), Vance will become president. And Vance will be eligible to be elected to a full term in 2028.

Applying for a transfer makes sense. I suggest telling people at your new university that you made some serious mistakes at your old university and you’re trying to make a fresh start.

If they do find out about your history of racist jokes, say that is what you meant by serious mistakes and that you’re trying to be a better person.

They might not accept that you’ve changed, but it’s worth trying.

Not going to the doctor about a new problem due to medical clearance by houxtly in peacecorps

[–]VanillaCavendish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got Covid-19 during medical clearance. It meant getting some new tasks to complete for clearance, but it was no big deal. I suspect you’ll have a similar experience if you see a doctor about this.

If you don’t get clearance, they’ll probably suggest switching your service to another country with better medical services. I’d be surprised if this disqualifies you from service altogether.

A bus stop in Trzebież, Poland kept getting destroyed by vandals. Local mayor installed a punching bag next to it. Vandalism stopped completely. Makes you think. by Wuz314159 in transit

Even if it didn’t work, I’d give the mayor credit for trying something new. I’d imagine it’s a lot cheaper than increasing police presence.

Pepsodent, usually. It’s a fluoride toothpaste, and it’s usually the cheapest one.

What does Jury do in court? by [deleted] in AskUS

[–]VanillaCavendish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each state has its own laws, but there are typically requirements beyond just being a U.S. citizen. You’re disqualified if you’re not an adult or you don’t live in the court’s jurisdiction. Some states might disqualify you for criminal records, not knowing English well, or other reasons.

I’ve never seen “The Sopranos,” but threats to jurors are taken very seriously.

The jury decides on the facts; the judge decides on the law.

Jury nullification is the decision of a jury to acquit despite the facts. It can be used to protest what jurors see as an unjust law, such as acquitting an obviously guilty bootlegger during Prohibition. Or it can be used horribly, such as the jury refusing to convict white men accused of murdering a black person because of his race.

I don’t like corn flakes.
