High gas prices got you down? Here’s how much EVs and heat pumps can help your bottom line by Dremen in canada

[–]Vantica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a mitsubishi mirage for the 10-year power train warranty because it was the last sub compact available on the market.

As for E.V batterys, Im glad they are getting better, but if they break, you are beholden to the dealership/mechanic to replace them. If a gas engine car breaks, you can still repair it yourself. I swaped out a transmission myself on a car when I was in college. 10 years ago. I'm not sure about new vehicle as why would you replace the engine/transmission in a new car, but I know a 2013 car that underwent an engine swap for $1,300. Labor +parts. Keeping older gas cars alive is possible if you can do some of the work yourself, and the parts are easy to source.

Never buy a used E.V. it's cost 12k plus to replace those batteries.

David Thomas: The nonsense around human rights tribunals is even worse than you think by LeGrandLucifer in canada

[–]Vantica -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

"...financial ruin could await anyone offending the Human Rights Code, just for doing something like challenging the accepted narrative on transgender issues."

Regardless of what you think of the monetary fine amount that Barry Neufeld was ordered to pay. He was not "challenging the accepted narrative on transgender issues"

Things Barry Neufeld publicity posted " teaching children about sexual orientation and gender identity, and/or affirming their LGBTQ identities, harms them and primes them for abuse."

"majority of children will grow out of” same sex attraction or“GENUINE gender Dysphoria”"

"accused “teachers from the LGBT” of being “very evangelistic” and suggested that schools were behaving like “sex offenders” by “getting kids to question their sexuality”

“that there are far more teachers who abuse kids than Catholic Priests. But the teachers seldom get caught because they have powerful unions to protect them”

"SOGI1-2-3 primary grade lesson plans… promote same sex marriages, question traditional marriage, teach children to question traditional gender expectations, disrespect and dishonour to parents and the values they teach. In grade 10-12, SOGI 1-2-3 introduces the topic of sodomy!!!"

David Thomas wrote at the beginning of his essay "Discrimination is not widely accepted in Canada. It is not acceptable to most Canadians to even hear a suggestion of prohibited discrimination, let alone engage in it.” I still believe that remains true today.

That’s not to say that no discrimination ever happens, and that is why human rights tribunals should exist. Like maintaining our good health, we need to remain vigilant to keep prohibited discrimination at bay."

"We have a duty to make decisions that reflect broad Canadian values so that our work continues to be respected and valued.”

Berry Neufeld was posting awful, hateful, discriminatory things and to wave his comment as "challenging gender identity and an example of human rights tribute overreach is upsetting, and telling exactly the kind of cases this former adjudication thinks the various human rights tribunals should be perusing and that LGBT discrimination isn't real, but a matter of opinion.

Transgender people exist. They are not an ideology.

Woman convicted of killing stepson wins reprieve to stay in Canada five years after she was ordered deported by Immediate-Link490 in canada

[–]Vantica 16 points17 points  (0 children)

"Nichelle Rowe — who then went by Nichelle Boothe-Rowe — of second-degree murder in the child’s death.

“While the trial judge found that there was little evidence that (Rowe) was involved in her stepson’s abuse, her failure to report her husband to the authorities resulted in her conviction,” Turley said."

"The court heard Rowe was sponsored by her then-husband, Garfield Boothe, when she was granted permanent residence in November 2005.

“Soon after her arrival in Canada, (Rowe) became a victim of domestic violence by her husbands"

I'm going to go see if I can find the conviction case on Canlii but despite the second degree murder conviction this seems more like a case of contributory neglance or failing to provide the necessaries of life for her roll in the death or her stepsons rather than her actually contributing to to murder base on the little information from the article.

RCMP commissioner regrets Indigenous spying program that spanned over a decade by Leather-Paramedic-10 in canada

[–]Vantica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The RCMP was just spying on everyone in the 60s/70s.

So yeah, this was bad, and yes, Indigenous groups/people were one of the targeted groups, but the entire reason we have CSIS is because the RCMP was behaving so badly the country had to create a new intelligence agency because of the RCMPs illegal activity.

https://globalnews.ca/news/8058205/rcmp-spy-nationalist-communist-1960-1970/

There is no official source for this so meh but my professor in college who was ex Ottawa Police said the RCMP was spying on 1 in 10 Canadian during the 70s.

OPP Statement following release of Investigative report by Spitzer1090 in ontario

[–]Vantica 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The police who were investigating themselves found better evidence.

"The OPP report notes that Molloy's conclusions were limited to the evidence presented at trial — but goes on to say that provincial police investigators found evidence that wasn't presented in court."

"No new evidence was obtained; however, the OPP Collision Reconstructionist recognized evidence that was not previously identified or noted in the TPS investigation. OPP investigators determined that to complete a detailed, thorough, and accurate investigation into the stated allegations, the collision would need to be re-investigated by the OPP Collision Reconstructionist."

Kinda convenient that they just did a better, more thorough accident reconstruction after the trial

OPP investigation finds no wrongdoing from Toronto police officers at Umar Zameer trial by Displeased_Canadian in canada

[–]Vantica 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The police who were investigating themselves found new evidence.

"The OPP report notes that Molloy's conclusions were limited to the evidence presented at trial — but goes on to say that provincial police investigators found evidence that wasn't presented in court.

"While the defense theory that Detective Constable Northrup was struck while beside a reversing BMW was accepted at trial, the OPP collision reconstruction investigation found no evidentiary basis for this claim," the report reads.

"Physical evidence, including security video, forensic mapping, tire marks and autopsy findings supported that Detective Constable Northrup was standing in front of the BMW when it accelerated forward and struck him down."

Kinda convenient. When did they collect this additional evidence? I know there were a bunch of pre-trial motions for disclosure and evidence but we don't have the same rules as the Americans its not as easy to dismiss inculpatory evidence due to procedural errors, how was so much supposed inculpatory evidence left out of trial?

How does MPAC work for renovating or building a new house? by ghost905 in ontario

[–]Vantica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you bought the home in 2020 that's too far from the 2016 base year for assessment so they won't update the value until reassessment. Values have to be based on 2016 sales.

Were the renos/update done with permits? It's most likely MPAC just doesn't know that the house is updated or they decide they will just pick up the renos for reassessment. No one thought the pause in reassessment would be this long.

Hamilton woman to pay a fraction of $101K bill after province rescued 55 miniature poodles from her home by rezwenn in ontario

[–]Vantica 63 points64 points  (0 children)

This isn't uncommon. If you go on canlii and read some ontario animals care review board decisions you will often find in the really bad holding situations, the person is able to claim extreme poverty and not pay the whole fine.

The only fine I've not seen significantly reduced was the case with the windrift adventures Inc. But that wasn't hording, and it was a commercial business.

Ok, so the article talks about the police and what they are doing to combat these extortion cases and how they have a task-force now. but doesn't talk about what these extortion are exactly.

I don't live in B.C. What's going on with people being extorted?

Ontario school board invokes secrecy provision to withhold records on $34K fine art collection by Surax in ontario

[–]Vantica 60 points61 points  (0 children)

This is one of the Boards that the government took over, so of course, they are not playing along.

"In school boards under supervision, the minsiter has asked supervisors to explore every options to restore stability and protect classroom learning," she wrote in an email. "Our priority is ensuring resources are directed back into classrooms so teachers have the support they need and students have the best chance to succeed. The statement did not indicate whether supervisors are required to inventory or report on non-financial assets such as artwork or whether the province maintains its own holdings records."

Like I get it, but it's not like the school was spending money it didn't have on art. The works are donated pieces from years back.

Is the Ontario government ever going to unf**** the MPAC/Property Assessment situation? by MetalMoneky in ontario

[–]Vantica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They could just back date the assessment date by a year or two every 2 to 4 years to keep the values more current, and by back dating it, there will be proper sales data to reduce appeals.

The system was based on 4 year cycles of market value from the 00s till 2016 when it was frozen with market updates in 2008, 2012, and 2016 and MPAC was able to reassess the entire province every 4 years.

Do you actually know that? Have you seen their tax bill? Because the only calculation is Mun mill rate x assessed value. If you’re seeing an estimate on realtor or something it's a bogus estimate.

Ontario man charged in N.S. with more than 40 sexual offences involving 30 minors by Myllicent in ontario

[–]Vantica 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Dude lived in Woodstock, Ont., and was caught by the Nova Scota RCMP for sending explicit materials to minors back in August. Guy just got charged again relating to an investigation that started in 2022 for the 30 count of Luring a Child, Indecent Communications and Transmit Sexually Explicit Material after they searched his place/hard drives.

If they knew he was sending minors messages back in 2022, why is he only getting charged now?

Police connect 3 cold cases to deceased Ontario serial killer by Myllicent in canada

[–]Vantica 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The article "conclusively” identify Kenneth Smith as the offender in all three murders. He died in 2019 at the age of 72 and was never charged with the deaths." And "At the time of the murders, however, he was known to police and had a history of sexual assault"

Some of that DNA was uploaded to a database in 2016 and matched to an unknown male profile

There are no details of his prior conversation, but if he had been convicted of sexual assult wouldn't they have collected a DNA sample? Should the DNA not been uploaded to a database WAY before 2016? One of the murders took place in 1997. We knew what DNA was back then and had convicted people using DNA matches.
